‘This Was Our Breeders’ Cup’: Ceiling Crusher Powers Gate To Wire In Cotillion

California shipper Ceiling Crusher spurted first from the gate, made all the pace, and repelled hard-trying favorite Pretty Mischievous to win the $1-million Cotillion (G1) by a half length Saturday at Parx Racing.

The daughter of Mr. Big entered off a six-length victory Torrey Pines (G3) Sept. 2 at Del Mar and showed her mettle at the elite level for the first time for trainer Doug O'Neill as she completed the Cotillion's 1 1/6 miles in 1:45.69 on a sloppy (sealed) track. She made all the early fractions: :23.31 for the opening quarter mile :47.64 for a half mile, 1:112.98 for six furlongs, and 1:39.16 for one mile.

Ridden by Edwin Maldanado in the Cotillion, Ceiling Crusher has won five of six starts this year while boosting her lifetime earnings to $938,400 with the Cotillion's $564,000 winner's share. She won her only start last year, a maiden special weight event June 3 at Santa Anita.

Sent off at 3-1 odds in the field of nine 3-year-old fillies, Ceiling Crusher returned $8.60 for the win.

Pretty Mischievous, who steadily advanced into contention after settling off the early pace in sixth, was 1 1/4 lengths clear of third-place finisher Occult.

Campaigned by Wonderland Racing Stables LLC, Ceiling Crusher was bred by Harris Farms. Her dam is the Indian Charlie mare Palisadesprincess.

Cotillion Quotes:

Winning trainer Doug O'Neill: “She brought everything that she was showing us back home on the road. You never know. We had the great Lava Man, who did so many wonderful things in the state of California but could never take it outside of California. You never know until you pack your bags and they have to stay in a hotel room and be away from home. She handled everything perfectly. Edwin has gotten to know her. She has no accelerator stuck to her at all. She is not a run-off. Being in the two-hole, he did not want to get caught up in a lot of traffic. He rode her away from there and I just thank God no one else went on a suicide mission to stop her. She has that high-cruising speed and she carried it all the way to the wire. She does not have a huge turn of foot. She has a high cruising speed, a grinder, a lot of heart. He used all that to a T.

Breeders' Cup Distaff next? “She is not nominated. It will be up to the guys and gals, if they want to write a big check. This was our Breeders' Cup. We looked at this on the calendar months ago and the fact that is coming true … this was our Breeders' Cup today.

Not getting to the bottom of her: “I wonder. We'll have to talk to Edwin about that. It looked like it was pretty close to the bottom to me late there. She is a wonderful filly and she has so much determination and so much of a will to win. I don't know how far she'll go but we know she will go a mile and a sixteenth on a sloppy track at Parx. That is all that matters. And it's a Grade 1!”

Case for top 3-year-old filly? “If I am voting, yeah. The filly that she beat (Pretty Mischievous) …. these kind of fillies make you want to jump out of bed and get to the barn. It's so hard to find horses like her.”

Concern leaving California for the first time: “It's always a concern and the weather was a big concern. Credit to Parx management. I even thought early this morning, 'are we still going to run?' They put on a wonderful card and were able to handle all that Mother Nature threw at them. A great day. I don't know when she is going home, but we are heading to the bar. We are going to celebrate her victory and celebrate life and cherish this moment.”

Compare it to winning the 2021 Pennsylvania Derby with Hot Rod Charlie: “They are all individual, right? Any horse you work alongside, when they throw a big effort in, you are so grateful.”

Winning jockey Edwin Maldonado: “The question was if she could handle (the 1 1/16 miles). We just let her kick on and do her thing. She's been running short and taking the lead sprinting, so I just needed a good break and we got a good break. The rest was her. I don't like any horses getting close to her. By the time they came at her at the three-eighths pole, I just went.”

When did you know you had it won? “When I turned for home. When I hit the eighth pole, I'm thinking, 'OK, she's got a good chance.' I'm very happy. These are good owners and I'm very thankful I got the opportunity to win for these guys.”

On a potential start in the Breeders' Cup Distaff at Santa Anita Park: “That would feel great. It's our hometown.”

Trainer Brendan Walsh (Pretty Mischievous, second): “A little disappointed in that she maybe didn't handle the track great initially. Tyler said as soon as she switched her leads down the back he kind of felt her way back into the race. But you know, Doug's filly got the jump on us and she was gone. That's the way it goes I'm afraid. Listen, if she can at all make her run she always makes her run. She always gives it 110 percent. Anytime she has been beaten she hasn't been beaten far. You can't be disappointed in her, we're just a little disappointed in the circumstances. Hats off to Doug's filly, too. She took her opportunity and she won the race. I'm not taking anything away from her.”

What could be next for Pretty Mischievous? “We'll see how she comes out of this and we'll chat and come up with a plan. We weren't really looking beyond today to be honest. We'll see what happens. As always, we're very proud of her. She'll be back.”

Jockey Tyler Gafflione (Pretty Mischievous, second): “She was kind of resenting the track for the first quarter of a mile, but once she switched leads down the backside she was in a little better position. The winner just had the jump on us today.”

On positioning down on inside: “There was plenty of room there, that wasn't an issue. More than anything, I just think she didn't like the track. Breaking on the inside it took us awhile to get better speed and force our way out and make some room to make the run. The weather though, man, of all the days.”

Graded stakes winners Caramel Swirl and Maryquitecontrary as well as four-time Florida stakes winner R Adios Jersey, top a dozen horses on the main list for the $200,000 Princess Rooney Invitational (G3) Oct. 7 at Gulfstream Park.

The seven-furlong Princess Rooney for fillies and mares is a “Win and You're In” qualifier for the $1-million Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) Nov. 4 at Santa Anita.

Godolphin homebred Caramel Swirl, trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, won the 6 ½-furlong Vagrancy (G3) May 14 at Belmont Park in just her second start in nearly nine months. The 5-year-old Union Rags mare won the Raven Run (G2) in 2021 and was second to champion Goodnight Olive in the Ballerina (G1) last summer, a race where she had her most recent start, finishing fourth behind another champion in Echo Zulu Aug. 26.

Rodney Lundock's Florida homebred Maryquitecontrary, seventh in the Ballerina, has been right at home at Gulfstream with six wins and a second from seven career tries. The 4-year-old First Dude filly put together a five-race win streak starting last summer that included wins in the one-mile Rampart on the final day of 2022 and the seven-furlong Inside Information (G2) Jan. 28. Her streak was snapped when she ran second to Goodnight Olive in the April 8 Madison (G1) at Keeneland.

Averill Racing, ATM Racing and Jayson Werth's R Adios Jersey, also bred in Florida, exits a front-running 6 ½-length triumph in the seven-furlong Sheer Drama Aug. 19 at Gulfstream, where she has a record of 4-2-2 from 10 starts. Fourth in the Inside Information, the 5-year-old Adios Charlie mare has also registered three state-bred stakes wins at Tampa Bay Downs, the most recent coming in the seven-furlong FTBOA City of Ocala last December.

Also among the main invitees are Beth's Dream, winner of the one-mile Heavenly Cause April 15 at Laurel Park that is 4-for-7 lifetime at Gulfstream; Flakes, winner of Gulfstream's 6 ½-furlong Game Face June 17; stakes winner Funny How, second in the April 7 Distaff Handicap (G2) at Aqueduct; Last Leaf, a four-time stakes winner at Gulfstream that is twice Grade 3-placed; and Chilean Group 2 winner Yuki.

Four horses are on the reserve list of invitations including Flag Woman and Into Happiness, both riding three-race win streaks, and Miss New York, winner of the July 2 Boiling Springs at Monmouth Park.

The Princess Rooney was won the past two years by Ce Ce, who used her 2021 victory as a springboard to victory in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint and the Eclipse Award as champion female sprinter.

Run at Calder Race Course from 1983 to 2013 before being relocated to Gulfstream, the Princess Rooney honors the 1984 champion older female and 1991 inductee into the National Museum of Racing's Hall of Fame that won 17 of 21 career starts and more than $1.3 million in purses from 1982-84. Five of her wins came in Grade 1 stakes – the 1982 Frizette, 1983 Kentucky Oaks and 1984 Vanity, Spinster and Breeders' Cup Distaff.

Damon’s Mound Rolls To Victory In Gallant Bob

Damon's Mound proved again that sprinting on dirt is what he does best, winning Saturday's $400,000 Gallant Bob Stakes (G2) at Parx Racing.

Owned and bred by Michelle and Cliff Love, trained by Michelle Lovell and ridden by Junior Alvarado, the 3-year-old Florida-bred son of Girvin out of the Stroll mare San Antonio Stroll prevailed by 1 1/4 lengths after a stretch duel with Nautical Star, who finished second, 3 1/2 lengths ahead of Gordian Knot.

The winning time was 1:10.24 for six furlongs over the sloppy track.

Ryvit broke fast and took the early lead over Sir Lancelot, with Damon's Mound laying third. Sir Lancelot put his head in the front on the far turn with Ryvit responding immediately, but by then Damon's Mound and Nautical Star were in hot pursuit. Damon's Mound went by Ryvit on his outside and held off Nautical Star, who was widest of all.

Post-time favorite Damon's Mound paid $5.60 in winning for the fourth time. He has four wins and a second in dirt sprints, including a convincing victory in the Saratoga Special (G2) in his second career start in August 2022. The Gallant Bob was his second graded stakes triumph and improved his career earnings to $601,700. Damon's Mound has run at six tracks over six distances and two surfaces in nine career starts.

Ninetyprcentmaddie closed fast to finish fourth, followed by Ryvit, Dreaming of Kona, Depoli, Praetorian Guard and Sir Lancelot.

Gallant Bob Quotes:

Winning jockey Junior Alvarado: “He's done very well the last couple races. He's been on the engine and making my job pretty easy. I rode him last time, kind of the same thing – broke out of there, put him on the engine. He likes that. He likes to feel that he's the one in control. They outfooted me the first part, the two faster horses on the outside, then I was sitting in a beautiful trip. When I started picking it and making my run he was there digging in for me the whole way to the wire.”

Mitch Butler, assistant to winning trainer Michelle Lovell: “Everything worked out real well. We knew there was some speed on the outside, and luckily the speed got in front of us, and Junior was able to take the horse outside like that and set up the easy trip. When he asked for the run, he just came to run just like we hoped he would, so it worked out real well. Probably as good as it could go.”

“I'm so happy for Michelle, of course, and the owners Mr. and Mrs. Love. We just found this spot, and it seems like he's doing so well and were just so happy that we have the horse in the barn and that he is doing as good as he is now.”

On Maxfield Overnight Stakes two starts back over mud at Ellis Park: “That day it rained right before his race. It came like a monsoon and I think it was just a different track condition, but today with the rain they had the track sealed all day and all night so it probably just worked out better for him.”

Jockey Irad Ortiz (Nautical Star, second): “He fought all the way to the wire. The winner is a nice horse. Going to the quarter pole, I was moving pretty good and I thought I had horse and I thought I was going to be hard to beat. But that horse kept fighting. I am really happy with the way (Nautical Star) ran. He is a nice horse. He handled the track pretty well. The track is pretty fair. They have been doing a great job.”

Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. (Nautical Star, second): “It looked like we had him, but Damon's Mound is back into form. He won his last race and he beat us fair and square. I thought, coming down the stretch, that we had a good chance of winning. And Irad thought the same thing. The winner just never gave in. Full credit to him. I am happy with how he ran. He went from an allowance (a win Aug. 18 at Gulfstream) straight into this kind of company against seasoned horses. He is going to be a nice sprinter for us. He will go anywhere from 6 furlongs to a mile, at least, and he has a bright future ahead of him.”
