Grade 1 Ladies: Lady Kate, Paris Lights Return In Friday’s Distaff At Aqueduct

Anderson Stables' Lady Kate looks to make the grade in Friday's Grade 3, $150,000 Distaff, a seven-furlong sprint for older fillies and mares at Aqueduct Racetrack.

The Distaff is the first stakes race of the 11-day Big A spring meet, which will run Thursday, April 1 through Sunday, April 18.

Trained by Eddie Kenneally, the Grade 1-placed Lady Kate will make her seasonal debut following an off-the-board effort in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Distaff won by eventual Champion Older Dirt Female Monomoy Girl in November at Keeneland.

The 5-year-old Bernardini mare, who finished second to Monomoy Girl in the Grade 1 La Troienne in September at Churchill Downs, enjoyed a four-win campaign in 2020, including a score in the one-mile Groupie Doll in August at Ellis Park.

“She had a very strong campaign last year,” said Kenneally. “She won four races and traveled around a little bit. She had a busy year.”

Lady Kate, out of the graded stakes-winning Street Cry mare Princess Haya, enjoyed a freshening before returning to the work tab in February at Palm Meadows Training Center in Florida.

“She wintered really well,” said Kenneally. “We sent her to Eddie Woods in Ocala and turned her out for a couple of months and brought her back in January at Palm Meadows. She hasn't missed a beat since she came back in. She's benefitted from her vacation time and I think she's come back really good.”

Lady Kate battled with Monomoy Girl on three occasions last year and Kenneally said the La Troienne effort was the highlight of a strong campaign.

“That was a deep field and she beat some quality horses that day,” said Kenneally. “She didn't get beat too far by Monomoy Girl, so I think that was probably her best race.”

Kenneally said Lady Kate's natural speed allows her success over a variety of trips.

“She's versatile. She's won at 6 1/2-furlongs, a one-turn mile, the Groupie Doll was a mile around two turns and the La Troienne was a mile and a sixteenth around two turns,” said Kenneally. “I think seven-eighths on the comeback is a good distance to start back at, but we'll be planning on stretching her out after that.”

Lady Kate, who was supplemented to the Distaff after an allowance race at Gulfstream Park did not fill, will exit post 2 under Trevor McCarthy.

WinStar Stablemates Racing's Paris Lights bested Crystal Ball by a head in the nine-furlong Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks last out in July at Saratoga Race Course. The 4-year-old Curlin bay, unraced as a juvenile, won 3-of-4 starts in her sophomore season.

Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, Paris Lights has prepared for her seasonal debut at Payson Park in Florida, breezing three-eighths in 38.40 seconds on March 21.

Paris Lights will exit post 4 under Junior Alvarado.

Ten Strike Racing's Portal Creek, a 5-year-old Shanghai Bobby mare trained by Juan Guerrero, has enjoyed a productive winter at the Big A despite not having her picture taken.

Portal Creek finished second, beaten a neck by Sharp Starr, in the Grade 3 Go for Wand, a one-turn mile over a sloppy and sealed Aqueduct main track in December. She followed with a fourth in the seven-furlong Interborough in January and was a prominent second to Lake Avenue last out in the one-mile Heavenly Prize Invitational on March 6.

Kendrick Carmouche, aboard for the Go for Wand and Interborough efforts, has the call from post 5.

Saul Kupferberg's Honor Way enters from wins in the seven-furlong Pumpkin Pie in November at Belmont and the six-furlong Garland of Roses in December at the Big A.

The 7-year-old Caleb's Posse mare, trained by Charlton Baker, boasts a record of 41-13-8-7 with purse earnings of $688,892 and will be piloted by Jose Ortiz from the inside post.

Perrine Time Thoroughbreds' Kansas Kis has come close to stakes success at Aqueduct on two occasions for trainer Ray Handal. The 4-year-old Constitution bay missed by a nose to Water White in the 2020 Busher Invitational, traveling a one-turn mile. Last out, Kansas Kis tracked from third in the six-furlong Correction and completed the trifecta just 1 1/2-lengths back of the victorious Sadie Lady.

Kansas Kis will exit post 3 under Pablo Morales.

The Distaff is slated as Race 7 on Friday's eight-race card. First post is 1:20 p.m. Eastern.

Ax Man Wires Field Under Maldonado In Santana Mile At Santa Anita

A surprise to no one, Ax Man, ridden for the first time by Edwin Maldonado, sped to the front out of the gate and never looked back as he drilled five rivals, including his well-fancied stablemate Mastering, by 4 ½ lengths in Sunday's $75,000 Santana Mile at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.  Trained by Bob Baffert and owned and bred by longtime clients Hal and Patti Earnhardt, Ax Man got the distance in 1:36.56.

Breaking like a shot from his number five post position, Ax Man obviously relished his front-running trip and with a three-length advantage over Major Cabbie three sixteenths from home, the Santana Mile was never in question thereafter.

“I was very confident turning for home,” said Maldonado, who is regarded as one of the best “speed” riders on this circuit.  “I gave him a couple reminders, but he knows what he's doing…Bob told me to put him on the lead and it's not like I don't like to be on the lead, right?  The rest of it was very simple, put him on the lead and he did the rest.”

Fourth in the Grade 3 Palos Verdes Stakes going six furlongs on Jan. 23, Ax Man, who was unbeaten in two starts at a flat mile, was off as the third choice in the wagering at 3-1 and paid $8.80, $5.80 and $4.00.

“I'm happy for Hal Earnhardt and Patti, they have been with me since day one, since 1983, and it's been real quiet for them (lately),” said Baffert, who also notched his third win on the day and his 10th stakes victory of the meet, giving him 26 and 10 respectively, good for a dead heat in both categories with Phil D'Amato.  “This was a perfect spot for him and I told Edwin, 'When this horse makes the lead, he gets really brave on the lead,' and that's what he did today.

“We'll give him a little time.  He ran pretty hard today but we'll freshen him and pick our spots with him.  He's been a lot of fun at the barn, he deserved one of these wins because he was hooking some monsters (in his earlier races).”

A 6-year-old gelding by Baffert's 2011 Santana Mile winner Misremembered, Ax Man is out of the Flying Chevron mare Shameful.  A winner of a restricted stakes at Pimlico at age 3, Ax Man now has two stakes wins and an overall mark of 16-7-0-3.  With the winner's share of $47,880, he increased his earnings to $357,797.

A multiple stakes winner but the longest shot in the field at 9-1, owner/trainer Val Brinkerhoff's Restrainedvengence was last early and made a good late run to finish second, 1 ½ lengths in front of Fashionably Fast.  Ridden by Tyler Baze, Restrainedvengence paid $8.60 and $5.00.

Quick from the gate but no match early for the winner, California-bred Fashionably Fast was third throughout while never threatening the winner.  The second choice at 3-1 with Tiago Pereira up, he paid $3.20 to show while finishing 1 ¼ lengths in front of Mastering.

Ridden by Juan Hernandez, Mastering, the 9-5 favorite, saved ground throughout and was fourth, about 2 ½ off the winner at the quarter pole but did not fire in a disappointing effort.

Fractions on the race were 23.11, 46.83, 1:11.65 and 1:23.95.

Racing will resume with an eight-race card on Friday, first post time is at 1 p.m.  Beginning Friday, the General Public will be admitted, but fans must obtain reserved seating beginning Monday at 10 a.m. by visiting santaanita.com/open.

Atras Looking To Maintain Hot Streak With Chateau, Maracuja In Aqueduct Stakes

Trainer Rob Atras boasts a 20-9-3-2 record at Aqueduct racetrack in March and he hopes to parlay such prosperity into April with likely stakes contenders Chateau and Maracuja for next Saturday's stakes-laden Wood Memorial Day program at the Ozone Park, N.Y., track.

“We've had a good March, I don't want it to end,” Atras said.

Atras, 37, saddled Michael Dubb's Chateau to a win in the Grade 3 Tom Fool last out on March 6 at the Big A and will take the next step up for Saturday's Grade 1, $300,000 Carter Handicap at seven furlongs.

The 6-year-old son of Flat Out broke alertly, commanded swift fractions up front, and was never in doubt in the stretch running home a 3 ½-length winner in the Tom Fool. The win produced a career-best 100 Beyer.

Chateau is in the best form of his 33-race career having finished in the money in his last six starts while boasting a 9-5-2-2 record over the Big A main track.

Having never won past 6 ½-furlongs, Atras said there is some concern with the extra furlong.

“He deserves a shot. His last race was a big performance,” Atras said. “We know he loves Aqueduct and seems to relish that surface. Obviously, there are distance questions but only time will tell with him.”

Beach Haven Thoroughbreds' Maracuja also will step up to the plate for Atras in the Grade 3, $250,000 Gazelle, a 100-40-20-10 qualifier for the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks on April 30 at Churchill Downs.

Third time was the charm for the daughter of third-crop sire Honor Code, who broke her maiden by 3 3/4-lengths on February 21 at Aqueduct over a good track. Trailing the compact field early on as the 4-5 favorite, Maracuja made a four-wide move approaching the top of the stretch and took command nearing the eighth-pole en route to a maiden victory.

Atras also expressed distance concerns with Maracuja, who will be running two turns for the first time in the nine-furlong Gazelle.

“She acts like two turns shouldn't be an issue but it's a big ask going from six and a half furlongs to a mile and an eighth and stepping up to a big race like this,” Atras said. “She's continued to train forwardly, and I think we're going to give it a shot. It's a really big step up. She's a nice filly and she won really professional last time. I would have liked to have had a prep going a mile or something heading into a two-turn race like the Gazelle.”

Atras said he would wait until after the Gazelle to determine the path that Maracuja would go down.

“She is really just race to race with her right now, I don't want to get too far ahead of myself. She's just learning things and putting it together,” Atras said.

Jockey Kendrick Carmouche retains the mount on both Chateau and Maracuja.

On Saturday, Atras enjoyed a victory with American Power in the seven-furlong Caixa Eletronica on New York Claiming Championship Day. The 6-year-old Power Broker chestnut battled with fellow stakes-winner Pete's Play Call but ultimately got the better of his foe, securing the win by one length.

Prior to Saturday's victory, American Power gave Atras his first graded stakes win in the Grade 3 Toboggan on January 30 at the Big A.

“He came out of his race really good. He ate everything up and jogged sound this morning, so everything is going well,” Atras said.

Atras said he would continue to space American Power's races out.

“He seems to do better with some space in between races so I'm not sure what we'll look at yet,” Atras said. “We'll mostly just go over him the next few days and then speak to [co-owner] Sandy Goldfarb and see which direction we'll go. I don't think he needs that much time, but with how everything worked out this ended up being the race that we pointed for.”
