Sadie Lady Sails To Easy Win In Dancin Renee Stakes

Saturday's featured race at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y. was one for the Ladies, with Sadie Lady at 7-5 surging to the front and outkicking 6-5 favorite Fierce Lady in a gate-to-wire, 1 1/2-length victory in the $100,000 Dancin Renee Stakes for New York-bred fillies and mares 4-years-old and up contesting at six furlongs.

The eighth edition of the Dancin Renee saw Dennis Narlinger's Sadie Lady, ridden by Jose Ortiz, break sharp and go to the front, leading the five-horse field through the opening quarter-mile in 22.79 seconds and the half-mile in 45.61 on the fast main track.

Sadie Lady was challenged in the stretch by Fierce Lady, but had enough in reserve to win for the third time in four starts, completing the sprint in 1:11.05 for trainer Rob Atras.

Ortiz, who notched his third win on the card, rode Sadie Lady for the first time and earned his third victory in the Dancin Renee [Clear Pasaj in 2013 and La Verdad in 2015].

“When we passed the half-mile pole, she switched to her left lead and she kind of went on her own,” Ortiz said. “I knew I had enough room to wait, but she went on her own. It was hard to take that momentum away from her. I just let her do her thing and use her speed and she used it well. I was happy with how she carried on. She ran a very good race. Her speed is her weapon.”

The Freud mare won for the second time in three starts to commence her 5-year-old campaign. She bested Call On Mischief by a head in the Correction going the Dancin Renee distance in her seasonal bow in March at Aqueduct and followed with a runner-up effort last out in the Grade 3 Vagrancy Handicap at 6 1/2 furlongs last month at Belmont.

Sadie Lady, running back in a restricted stakes, posted her first victory at Belmont since winning her career debut in September 2018.

“I know she's very fast and she's actually cleared quite easily in her other races,” Atras said. “I was a little concerned that Ruvies in Time might challenge us out of the gate, but she [Sadie Lady] broke so sharp and Jose just let her roll out of there and everything went to plan.”

Sadie Lady, bred by JMJ Racing Stables, improved her career earnings to $406,232. She returned $4.90 on a $2 win wager.

“She's a really cool filly and likes to win,” Atras said. “She's not easy in the morning and the exercise rider does a really good job with her.”

Fierce Lady, owned by Nice Guys Stables and Steve Hornstock, earned a placing in her first stakes appearance since January 2020, besting Ruvies in Time by a half-length for second. The Brittany Russell trainee, bred by Sugar Maple Farm, returned from a nearly six-month layoff to win against optional claimers last out in May at Belmont and recorded her best stakes performance since running second in the 2019 Joseph A. Gimma Stakes.

“I thought there would be more pace. The plan was to come flying at the end, but the winner went to the lead and had it easy,” said Fierce Lady jockey Luis Saez.

Espresso Shot and Eloquent Speaker completed the order of finish. Good Credence scratched.

Longshot Informative Shocks In Salvator Mile at Monmouth Park

At 79-1, not many had given Informative a chance to win in Saturday's Grade 3 Salvator Mile at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J. Last after the first quarter, this son of Bodemeister seemed to have too much ground to make up on Green Light Go and Ny Traffic, but he found room on the rail to sneak through and pass Ny Traffic in the stretch to win the $150,000 G3 stakes race for 3-year-olds and older.

After a clean break, Green Light Go took a short lead on the rail, with Ny Traffic a half-length behind for the first five furlongs. On the final turn, Paco Lopez sent Ny Traffic to the lead, powering past a slowing Green Light Go. In the stretch, Ny Traffic dug in and tried to hold on to a length and half lead, but it was not enough. Jockey Jose Ferrer and Informative snuck through on the rail, flashing under the wire a length in front of Ny Traffic. Galerio and West Will Power were third and fourth, with War Stopper, Pirate's Punch, Basin, Bal Harbour, Green Light Go, and Croatian rounding out the field.

Fractions for the Salvator Mile were :23.98 for the first quarter, :47.27 for the half-mile, 1:11.55 for six furlongs, and 1:37.01 for the mile. Informative (79-1) paid $161.60, $37.80, and $15.60. Ny Traffic (4-5) paid $3.00 and $2.60. Galerio (7-1) paid $4.60 to show.

After the race, trainer Uriah St. Lewis was thrilled about Informative's longshot victory in the Salvator Mile.

“I expected this because this horse has been training so good. The last race he ran at Pimlico (second in a $35,000 optional claimer on May 15) he got blocked, checked and stopped and ran a huge number.” St. Lewis said to the Monmouth Press Office. “I said to myself 'if he can run that number again he can win – and he did.' We were not intimidated by this field. That's why we entered him. We thought he could win it. He has been close in a lot of his races and a mile (the horse was 0-for-19 at the distance) is right up his alley.

“When they went down the backside I thought I had no chance. But when we got to the top of the stretch and everything opened for him I said `our lucky day is coming.' All he had to do was finish strong and he finished strong. This feels good. I like that price $161.60 to win. Everyone is happy.”

Jockey Jose Ferrer knew what kind of horse he had under him today.

“We were in last place in the backside yes, but I saw everything happening in front of me. I had a lot of horse underneath. I've ridden horses like this before that looked like they were hopeless and they just pick it up for you.” Ferrer remarked after the race. “Everything opened up for me in the stretch. It was wide open to come through. I knew I had saved ground coming into the lane and I was thinking let's see what this horse has now. Then I saw Paco Lopez (aboard odds-on favorite Ny Traffic) drifting out and I said `man. I'm going to get him. I'm going to win this race.' The horse can't read the board so he didn't know (his odds). I've always said you don't have a chance if you stay in the jockeys' room and this is proof of that.”

Owned by Trin-Brook Stables, Informative is a 4-year-old colt by Bodemeister out of the Hard Spun mare Lucky Black. He was bred in Kentucky by Rose Hill Farm and John Trumbulovic and sold to Trin-Brook Stables by Brick City Thoroughbreds for $25,000 at the 2019 Fasig-Trip Two-Year-Olds In Training Sale. The G3 Salvator Mile is Informative's first stakes win and third win of his career in 25 starts with career winnings of $240,290.

McCarthy To Start Rideforthecause, Go Big Blue Nation In Possibly Perfect Stakes

Go Big Blue Nation and Rideforthecause, two campaigners with similar come-from-behind running styles, will represent trainer Michael McCarthy in Sunday's $75,000 Possibly Perfect Stakes for fillies and mares three and up at 1 ¼ miles on turf.

Both are coming out of the Grade 3 Santa Barbara Stakes on May 8, where Rideforthecause was beaten a nose by Neige Blanche and Go Big Blue Nation was fourth, 2 ½ lengths behind her stablemate.

“Rideforthecause has a bit of a class edge (on Go Big Blue Nation),” McCarthy allowed, alluding to her last five races being graded events.

“She was unlucky to get beat last time (getting out-bobbed), but they're both training well. They have similar styles but the distance seems to suit both of them.”

Rideforthecause, a five-year-old Candy Ride mare owned by Alpha Beta Delta Stables, was fourth in the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor at Woodbine last Oct. 18 and won the Grade 2 Canadian at the Toronto track last Sept. 12.

The Possibly Perfect will be only the third stakes start in 16 races for Go Big Blue Nation, a four-year-old daughter of 2011 Grade 1 Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom owned by Cannon Thoroughbreds, LLC.

The Possibly Perfect is named for the multiple Grade 1 winner that won 11 of 18 starts with two seconds and four thirds, earning $1,377,634 in the early and mid-1990's, when trained by the late Bobby Frankel.

As to Grade 1 Preakness Stakes winner and third-place Grade 1 Belmont Stakes finisher Rombauer, McCarthy said, “He's doing very well. He's in light training right now but we have nothing being considered for his next race.”

The Possibly Perfect will be presented as the ninth race on Sunday's card. The field includes Lady Noguez, Kent Desormeaux, 20-1; Go Big Blue Nation, Flavien Prat, 5-2; Dogtag, Umberto Rispoli, 9-5; Dynapower, Tiago Pereira, 50-1; Neige Blanche, Juan Hernandez, 3-1; Catch the Eye, Abel Cedillo, 15-1; Rideforthecause, Mario Gutierrez, 4-1; and Kuora, Trevor McCarthy, 10-1.

Puype Has Marathoner Ward ‘n Jerry Primed For Upcoming San Juan Capistrano

Ward 'n Jerry has yet to see a turf marathon he didn't fancy.

The 8-year-old gelded son of Lucky Pulpit – bred in California by long-time successful proponents of racing in the Golden State, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Williams – seeks his third straight victory next Saturday when he runs in the Grade 3 San Juan Capistrano Stakes for 3-year-olds and up at 1 ¾ miles on turf at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.

“This has been my destination race for him and he's ready to roll,” trainer Mike Puype said.

Ward 'n Jerry, a committed closer in a career of 27 races, of which he has won eight and earned $468,259, turned in an uncharacteristic performance in last year's San Juan, setting the pace before finishing third, beaten five lengths.

“He's doing good,” said Puype, enjoying a typically solid meet with 27 victories from 124 starts, a 22 percent winning average, with earnings of $1,201,884.

“The horse ran off a little bit in the race last year but he's not doing that anymore, so he should be all right this time around.”

Ward 'n Jerry worked five furlongs on the main track Saturday morning in 1:02 flat.
