After a one-week break, the Road to the Breeders’ Cup World Championships resumes this weekend in North America, with two Challenge Series “Win and You’re In” preps held at the seaside southern California track where the 38th renewal of the event will occur this November.

Letruska On Top In NTRA Thoroughbred Poll
St. George Stable's 5-year-old mare Letruska remains at No. 1 in the NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll, with the order of the top 10 horses staying almost the same as last week.
Letruska, trained by Fausto Gutierrez, has 16 first-place votes and 327 points. This year, Letruska has Grade 1 victories in the Apple Blossom Handicap at Oaklawn Park and in the Ogden Phipps at Belmont Park. She also has a Grade 2 win in the Fleur de Lis at Churchill Downs.
Godolphin's 4-year-old Maxfied, trained by Brendan Walsh, is in second place with six first-place votes and 279 points. A winner three times in four starts in 2021, Maxfield captured the June 26 Grade 2 Stephen Foster Stakes at Churchill Downs in his most recent start.
Klaravich Stables' Domestic Spending, and Winchell Thoroughbreds and Willis Horton Racing's 4-year-old Silver State, are now in a third-place tie, each with 250 points. Trained by Chad Brown, Domestic Spending, with seven first-place votes, finished in a dead heat for first with Colonel Liam in the Grade 1 Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic, and won the Grade 1 Resorts World Casino Manhattan Stakes at Belmont Park. Silver State, trained by Steve Asmussen, has won all four of his starts this year, including a last-out victory in the Grade 1 Hill 'N' Dale Metropolitan Handicap on June 5 at Belmont. Silver State received three first-place votes this week.
Godolphin's 3-year-old Essential Quality, who won the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes presented by NYRA Bets, remained in fifth place. Trained by Brad Cox, Essential Quality, who is being pointed to this Saturday's Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga, has three first-place votes and 215 points.
Korea Racing Authority's Knicks Go, also trained by Cox, is in sixth place. Winner of the Grade 3 Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap on July 2 and Gulfstream Park's Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational in January, Knicks Go has 151 points.
Godolphin's 4-year-old Mystic Guide was taken out of training last week due to a knee injury. Trained by Mike Stidham, Mystic Guide, the Group 1 Dubai World Cup winner, retained seventh place with two first-place votes and 104 points.
Michael Lund Petersen's 4-year-old Gamine, the 2020 champion female sprinter, is three for three this year, including a victory in the Grade 1 Derby City Distaff presented by Kendall Jackson Winery at Churchill Downs. Trained by Bob Baffert, Gamine is in eight place with 101 points.
Juddmonte's 3-year-old Mandaloun, who was moved up from second to first place in the Grade 1 TVG.com Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park on July 18 following the disqualification of Hot Rod Charlie, retained ninth place. Mandaloun, who finished second in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve, has 55 points.
Hot Rod Charlie, owned by Boat Racing, Gainesway Stable, Roadrunner Racing, and William Strauss, moved from 11th to 10th place this week, replacing Godolphin's Althiqa (GB). Hot Rod Charlie, second in the Belmont Stakes, has 48 points.
The NTRA Top Thoroughbred polls are the sport's most comprehensive surveys of experts. Every week eligible journalists and broadcasters cast votes for their top 10 horses, with points awarded on a 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis. All horses that have raced in the U.S., are in training in the U.S., or are known to be pointing to a major event in the U.S. are eligible for the NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll. Voting in the Top Thoroughbred Poll is scheduled to be conducted through Nov. 6.

Storms Interrupt Colonial Downs Card: Violenza, Eons Rally For Stakes Victories
A neck and a head were the difference makers at Colonial Downs in New Kent, Va., on Monday in the Andy Guest and Buckland Stakes, while Mother Nature was the difference maker in the Da Hoss Stakes, which was cancelled mid-card due to thunderstorms in the area. Both stakes were contested over the Secretariat Turf Course, which was labeled good after the rain departed.
Seven of the track's nine races scheduled were run. The fourth and fifth fell victim to the storms which caused an hour-plus delay.
Randall Bloch, Six Column Stables LLC, John Seiler, David Hall & David Kirk's Violenza edged Mucha Mezquina on the outside after a thrilling finish that saw the pair trailing by nine lengths halfway through the 5 1/2-furlong $100,000 Andy Guest Stakes. Both made moves together exiting the turn and at the top of stretch, moved into striking position. Violenza ended up prevailing in a blanket finish where the top five finished within 1 1/2 lengths of each other.
Regular jockey Chris Landeros came in from Kentucky solely to ride Ian Wilkes' winning 4-year-old Violence filly. Sheldon Russell piloted Anthony Spinazzola's Mucha Mezquina for trainer Mark Salvaggio. Beantown Baby, going for her fourth straight win, finished third, just a neck behind the runner-up.
“She's good, she's nice and she's as honest as they come,” said Landeros of Violenza. “I think the pace up front really helped us. She doesn't mind a little bit of soft going so it was in our favor today. I know they skip over it early when there's a little bit of moisture in the ground. It favors a closer so I knew I had a little bit of an advantage coming into it today.”
Mark Grier's Eons and BBN Racing LLC's Kentucky Ghost encountered a similar scenario in the 1 1/8-mile, $150,000 Buckland, which followed next on the card. Both were among the three trailing horses at the half in the field of seven and both powered forward coming out of the final turn. Eons edged Kentucky Ghost by a head while Godolphin, LLC's Pixelate, highest money earner in the field with $493,350, took third, 1 1/4 lengths behind the runner-up.
“After the rain delay, all horses had been coming off the pace,” said winning jockey Mychel Sanchez. “I really liked my horse. I started out in the middle of the pack and by the time we got to the half I was last. But I knew he would close. I just wanted him to relax because he can be really tough but he can run. We got a lot of rain but the turf course here is amazing.”
With his fifth lifetime win, Eons' career bankroll increased to $428,615. The 5-year-old Giants Causeway horse is trained by Arnaud Delacour. The Kentucky-bred is out of the Hansel mare, Golden Antigua.
Colonial Downs hosts a nine-race card Tuesday at 1:45 PM. The season continues through September 1 with racing every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Greatest Honour Nearly Ready To Resume Training; McGaughey Will Target Winter Campaign
Trainer Shug McGaughey told bloodhorse.com on Monday that multiple graded stakes-winning 3-year-old Greatest Honour should be ready to resume training by Sept. 1. A Courtlandt Farm homebred son of Tapit, the colt won both the G3 Holy Bull and G2 Fountain of Youth to kick off his 2020 season.
Greatest Honour has been off since a disappointing third-place finish as the favorite in the G1 Florida Derby on March 27.
“He had an old cyst in a pastern and we gave him time for it to fill in,” McGaughey told bloodhorse.com. “It was nothing major but something we had to get behind him so he could move forward.”
With Greatest Honour's anticipated return to training on Sept. 1, McGaughey hopes to target a race in New York like the G3 Discovery on Nov. 27 in preparation for a winter campaign in Florida. The G1 Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream in January is a primary goal, the trainer said.
