Point Me By Gets First Graded Stakes Win In Bruce D At Arlington

With only two starts in his short career, Point Me By made his third outing a Grade 1 winning one, taking the Grade 1 Bruce D Stakes (formerly run as the Secretariat Stakes) at Arlington Park on what may be its final Arlington Million card. Facing a field of nine that included a variety of horses from stakes winner Tango Tango Tango to the maiden New Year Surprise, Point Me By bided his time midpack and closed with a rush to win the one-mile Bruce D by 2 3/4 lengths.

Breaking from the six post, Point Me By settled in behind Like a Saltshaker as the 3-year-old gelding grabbed an early lead, with Tango Tango Tango in second on the rail. Luis Saez kept Point Me By off the rail, running in fifth on the backside as Like a Saltshaker set fractions of :25.03 for the first quarter and :50.04 for the first half. On the far turn. Saez took his mount to the outside of horses, as Tango Tango Tango moved to the lead entering the stretch.

With Tango Tango Tango on the lead, Point Me By found running room down the center of the track, closing fast to win. Tango Tango Tango and Ginsburned needed a photo to determine second and third, with Tango Tango Tango notching second by a nose. King of Miami was fourth, with Like a Saltshaker, Therideofalifetime, Mr. Universe, New Year Surprise, and Shadizaar rounding out the field.

Bred in Kentucky by Winchester Farm, Point Me By is by Point of Entry out of Viva Allegiance, a Proud Citizen mare. He is owned by Homewrecker Racing Stable and trained by Eddie Kenneally. This was Point Me By's second win in three lifetime starts, for career winnings of $238,268.

Santa Barbara Finds More Success On American Turf In Beverly D At Arlington

Her second trip over an American turf course was her second winning one as Santa Barbara won the Grade1 Beverly D at Arlington Park in Arlington Heights, Ill. on Arlington Million Day. After a less-than-ideal trip in the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks, where she was boxed in early, jockey Ryan Moore was able to find more running room in the Beverly D, sitting behind leader Mean Mary throughout before moving to the outside on the final turn and sprinting to the lead in the stretch to win by four lengths.

With Bramble Queen and Oh So Terrible both scratched, the field for the Grade 1 turf stakes was down to five, with Mean Mary breaking from the inside and Santa Barbara from the middle of the pack. The field got away cleanly after Mean Mary broke through the gate prematurely and was then reloaded with no trouble. Luis Saez moved Mean Mary out to the lead in the first quarter with Naval Laughter a half length behind her on the outside. Moore kept Santa Barbara running easily on the rail in third, as Mean Mary logged a first quarter in :24.57 and a half-mile in :49.31.

Naval Laughter challenged Mean Mary's lead briefly going into the final turn of the 1 3/16 mile Beverly D, pulling even with Mean Mary as Moore moved Santa Barbara away from the rail. On the final turn, Santa Barbara was two wide, making her move on the outside of Mean Mary and Naval Laughter. Into the stretch, Santa Barbara easily took over the lead, drawing away from the field under a hand ride from Moore as Lemista sprinted through the stretch, almost catching Mean Mary at the wire. Joy Epifora and Naval Laughter rounded out the short field.

“She was always a filly I had a high opinion of,” winning rider Moore said to Arlington Park's Vince Greco after the race. “She was very comfortable through the race. Very straightforward today.”

Bred in Ireland by Whisperview Trading Ltd., Santa Barbara is by British sire Camelot out of the Danehill mare Senta's Dream (GB). Owned by Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, and Westerburg, the 3-year-old filly is trained by Aidan O'Brien. With her win in the G1 Beverly D, Santa Barbara has three wins in six lifetime starts for career winnings of $731,612.

Brown Find Arlington Winner’s Circle Again With Shantisara In Pucker Up

The graded turf stakes on the Arlington Million day card kicked off with a win by a familiar name, trainer Chad Brown taking the Grade 3 Pucker Up Stakes. At Arlington Park in Arlington Heights, Ill., Shantisara with Flavien Prat waited for an opening on the final turn and moved his three-year-old filly into the clear with ease to win by three and a half lengths.

Breaking from the third post, Prat put Shantisara in the middle of the field, content to hang back in fifth as Spritz sprinted out to a one-length lead over Oyster Bay. James Graham and Spritz set a measured pace, running the first quarter in :24.83 and the first half in :49.52 while Luis Saez kept Oyster Bay close to the leader throughout the 1 1/8-mile race. The field stayed fairly close together until the final turn, when Saez put Oyster Bay to a drive as they entered the stretch.

With Spritz tiring on the rail and Oyster Bay vying for the lead, Prat took Shantisara three-wide on the turn, finding a clear path toward the middle of the track. Shantisara took advantage of the daylight and sprinted for the lead, easily passing Oyster Bay as they approached the wire. Oyster Bay and Flown rounding out the top three, followed by Time for Glory, Double Blessed, Spritz, and Shesa Mystery.

Bred in Ireland by Oliver Donlon, Shantisara is by Coulsty out of the Dalakhani mare Kharana. Owned by Michael Dubb, Robert La Penta, and Madaket Stables, she was consigned by Aguiar Bloodstock at the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze-Up Sale and sold to Federico Barberini, agent, for $13,171. Her win in the G3 Pucker Up is her first win in two starts in the United States, after winning twice in France in 2020. With a record of three wins in seven lifetime starts, Shantisara has career earnings of $113,108.

High Oak Towers In Saratoga Special Victory

High Oak put in an impressive performance in his second lifetime start for jockey Junior Alvarado to win the Grade 2 Saratoga Special at The Spa on Aug. 14. The Bill Mott trainee chased a tough early pace, breaking well in a field of ten and settling for fifth, three wide on the backstretch run of the six and a half furlong contest. He passed inside rivals to click into third, behind pacesetters Doctor Jeff and Gunite into the stretch, then swung to the outside, hanging alongside them in the top of the stretch. At the 3/16ths pole, High Oak found another gear and powered away, winning by four and a half lengths.

Gunite hung on for second, with Nakatomi getting up for third. Favored Doctor Jeff, who went off at 8-5, was fifth.

Mott trains High Oak for owners LRE racing and JEH Racing. The Gormley colt came to the Special off a maiden win at Belmont in late June, where he also set off the early pace and closed. High Oak was bred in Kentucky by Catherine Parke and is out of Elusive Quality mare Champagne Sue. He was sold as a weanling at Keeneland November for $37,000, consigned by Valkyre Stud and purchased by Donarra Farm. As a yearling, he brought $70,000 from LRE Racing as a graduate from the Lane's End consignment.

High Oak paid $22.40 from a $2 win bet.

Bill Mott, winning trainer of High Oak (No. 11, $22.40): “We were just off the pace so he was right behind them. He was running plenty fast enough himself. When they hung up those fractions, I thought he'd have to be pretty good to hang in there himself.”

On working in company with older Grade 1-winner Casa Creed: “If they're going to run in these kind of races they better be able to do that. We just gave him some company to go with and thought they looked like a good pair. He was very professional today. We were very pleased. He's been a little tough to handle, but great in the paddock, great on the race track. He did everything right.”

On a potential next start in the G1, $500,000 Champagne on October 2 at Belmont Park: “You certainly would look at him and say that a one-turn mile is going to be okay. I guess you find all those things out as you go along. It's usually guesswork until you do it.

“I'm sure there will be plenty of discussion with [co-owner] Lee [Einseidler]. He's probably not going to want to pass up too many spots, but we'll talk and figure out a game plan.”

Junior Alvarado, winning jockey aboard High Oak (No. 11): “He broke very sharp today. He was a whole different horse today. He was mentally prepared and sharp. To be honest, I was just a passenger today. He put me in the spot that I wanted and he took me all the way around. When I turned for home, I just had to ask him a little bit and he took off.

“He broke great so I wasn't hustling to get there, but I wasn't going to slow him down either. He was going in a good rhythm for my horse. I know they were going fast but my horse was in a nice rhythm and he wasn't going as fast as he can go. He was pretty happy there. He finished up strong and galloped out great.”

Irad Ortiz, Jr., jockey aboard third-place Nakatomi (No. 1): “I had a perfect trip behind the leaders and off the speed. He was right there, close. The winner was much the best. My horse ran a good race. He came running.”
