Uncharacteristic Beats Myopic To Wire Again In Canadian Derby

In his sixth lifetime start, Uncharacteristic added graded stakes winner to his resume, taking the Grade 3 Canadian Derby at Century Mile Racetrack in Nisku, Alberta. The gray 3-year-old gelding sat midpack through much of the 1 1/4-mile stakes, went to the outside on the final turn, and then wore down the favorite Myopic in the stretch to win.

Breaking from post two, jockey Alexander Marti wrapped up on the Texas Wildcatter gelding early, as Myopic was squeezed between horses at the start but found his way to second behind front runner Smart Play. Uncharacteristic ran fourth on the rail behind Smart Play and Myopic as the two traded the lead on the backstretch and into the far turn.

Still behind the front runners as they entered the turn, Marti took Uncharacteristic to the outside, entering the stretch two wide as Myopic and Smart Play battled for the lead. Uncharacteristic dug in and wore down both in the last sixteenth of a mile to win by a length. The final time for the 1 1/4-mile G3 Canadian Derby was 2:04.16.

Winner of the listed Manitoba Derby over Myopic last out, Uncharacteristic paid $9.20, $4.20, and $3.30. Myopic paid $3.50 and $2.90. Smart Play paid $5.40 to show.

Bred in Kentucky by Glen Todd, Uncharacteristic is out of the Macho Uno mare My Kentucky Rose. He is owned by Adam Isfeld and trained by Robert VanOverschot. The 3-year-old gelding has two wins in four starts in 2021, for a lifetime record of three wins in six starts.

Starship Bonita Finds Winner’s Circle Again In Sheer Drama

Starship Stables and trainer Steve Dwoskin's Starship Bonita rallied to capture Saturday's $75,000 Sheer Drama Stakes at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., winning for the first time in 10 starts since her most recent victory in the 2018 edition of the same race.

The Sheer Drama, a seven-furlong stakes for Florida-bred fillies and mares, headlined Saturday's 12-race program that also featured the $60,000 North Bay Village, a mile overnight handicap for fillies and mares on turf.

Starship Bonita, who won two legs of the lucrative 2017 Florida Sire Stakes series, posted a 2 ¾-length victory in the 2018 Sheer Drama before her very promising career was compromised by a series of long breaks in her racing schedule the next few seasons. Sent to post at 30-1, the 6-year-old daughter of Gone Astray returned to form Saturday, stalking the early pace before taking the lead in the stretch and holding off stablemate Starship Nala by three-quarters of a length. Pacesetter Thissmytime held well to finish third, another three-quarters of a length back.

Ridden by Jesus Rios, Starship Bonita ran seven furlongs in 1:22.92.

Franklin-Simpson: The Lir Jet Finds His Best Stride Again At Kentucky Downs

Qatar Racing and Racehorse Club's The Lir Jet hadn't won a race since June of 2020, and had no luck in his first trip to the United States when ninth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf last fall. Despite a trio of off-the-board finishes and a three-month layoff, the 3-year-old son of Prince of Lir made his return trip to the United States a winning one on Saturday at Kentucky Downs.

Piloted by Tyler Gaffalione for trainer Brendan Walsh, The Lir Jet moved up the inside rail to earn a 1 3/4-length victory at odds of 8-1 in the Grade 3 Franklin-Simpson Stakes. He completed 6 1/2 furlongs over the firm course in 1:15.38, giving David Redvers' Qatar Racing a third straight win in the race.

Into the Sunrise and Bodenheimer were quick early, the former speeding away to lead the first quarter mile in :22.18. The Lir Jet got prime position along the inside, moving into fifth around the turn as the two frontrunners hooked up for the stretch run. Into the Sunrise held firm until The Lir Jet came up his inside and took command, pulling away to win by 1 3/4 lengths.

Easy Time made up a ton of ground to finish second by a head over Fauci, with Into the Sunrise just a nose back in fourth.

Bred in Ireland by Mr. Donal Boylan, The Lir Jet was a $9,775 yearling purchase at Goffs. He won his first two starts, including the G2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, and was twice placed in G1 company as a juvenile before his trip to the Breeders' Cup. This year, The Lir Jet ran third in a G3 in April, but had managed no better than sixth in his three starts since. Overall, The Lir Jet owns three wins, two seconds and a third from 11 starts, with earnings of $313,882.
