Skygaze Romps To Victory In Belle Mahone At Woodbine

Skygaze, full of run late under rider Patrick Husbands, dashed away from her rivals with ease down the stretch en route to a three-length win in Sunday's $100,000 Belle Mahone Stakes at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario.

Trained by Mark Casse, who won both Woodbine stakes on Saturday, Skygaze, a four-year-old daughter of American Pharoah-Skyscape, broke alertly in the Belle Mahone and sat second to pacesetter Fate Factor, who led the way through the opening quarter timed in :24.79.

Skygaze continued to track Fate Factor through a half in :48.73, but by the three-quarters mark, the positions were reversed.

It was game over mid-way down the lane as Skygaze romped to her fifth victory from 11 career starts for owner Tracy Farmer.

Crystal Glacier, also a Casse trainee, was second, a neck ahead of No Mo Lady. Art of Almost, another Casse charge, was fourth. Final time for the race was 1:42.72.

“By the three-quarter pole, I was loaded,” said Husbands. “She was the best today.”

It was the first stakes win for Skygaze, who was bred by Normandy Farm LLC. She was third in the 2019 edition of the Grade 3 Mazarine and third in the Grade 3 Trillium on June 26, her last start before the Belle Mahone.

“Last time I rode her, she was a little bit quiet,” noted Husbands. “Today, I went alone and warmed her up. It showed in her form that she likes to be in the race and the last time I rode her, she was flat the whole way with me. Today, she showed me that she really wanted to be in the race. She showed she was the best.”

Skygaze paid $5.50 to win.

Tobys Heart Rides Rail To Victory At Kentucky Downs

Joel Rosario has made the Kentucky Downs winner's circle a familiar sight in his time at the Franklin, Ky. track, adding another win to his record total with Tobys Heart's victory in the Music City Stakes. Patiently sitting on the rail throughout, Rosario sent Tobys Heart surging to the front in the stretch to take the 6 1/2-furlong stakes.

Breaking from post six, Tobys Heart settled in the back of the field of 11 early, content to hang back while Risky Reward led the field down the hill and around the bend. Into the stretch, Rosario found room on the rail to sneak through and pass Risky Reward to win by 2 3/4 lengths. Alwayz Late passed Risky Reward to take over second.

Tobys Heart is a 3-year-old filly by Jack Milton out of the Lil's Lad mare Pick of the Pack. She was bred in Kentucky by Trackside Farms. She is owned by Gary Barber, Terry Hamilton, and Bryan Lynch, who also trains the filly. Consigned by Bold Arrow Thoroughbreds, Tobys Heart was purchased for $45,000 by Alistair Roden Bloodstock at the 2020 Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's March Two-Year-Olds In Training Sale. With her win in the Music City, Tobys Heart has two wins in six starts in 2021 and a lifetime record of four wins in eight starts with career earnings of $494,750.

War Bomber Takes Toronto Cup At Woodbine

Over a mile on the E.P. Taylor turf course, War Bomber stalked the early pace, split horses, and took over the lead in deep stretch to take the Toronto Cup at Woodbine Race Track in Toronto, Ontario. Recently claimed from Mark Casse's barn by trainer Norman McKnight, the Irish bred gelding followed up his victory in an August claiming race over the same track with another winning performance.

Breaking from post three, jockey Shawn Bridgmohan settled the 4-year-old son of War Front on the rail behind the front three early, as Azzurro lead the field of nine down the backstretch with Barnegat Light and Gretzky the Great following. Into the far turn, Bridgmohan moved off the rail, but soon ran into traffic, forced to wait for the stretch to make his move.

Into the Woodbine straight, War Bomber found running room, split horses, and accelerated, passing Gretzky the Great and a surging Artie's Storm to win by two lengths. Artie's Storm was second and Riptide Rock beat Gretzky the Great for fourth.

Family Way Finds Winner’s Circle In Ladies Marathon At Kentucky Downs

Family Way and Tyler Gaffalione stalked the pace throughout the 1 5/16-mile Ladies Marathon at Kentucky Downs, went wide on the final turn, and then split horses in the stretch to take the last stakes race at the Franklin, Ky., track's 2021 meet. La Lune was second and Big Blue Nation third.

Breaking from post seven, Family Way was away fastest, giving way to Stand Tall early and settling in behind horses. Stand Tall held the lead on the backside, with Blame Debbie in second and Big Blue Nation third. Going down the hill, Blame Debbie took over, with Stand Tall shuffling back to third, just ahead of Family Way.

Blame Debbie held her lead around the race's final turn into the stretch, but soon gave way to Big Blue Nation as Family Way split horses at the top of the stretch to find running room on the outside of Blame Debbie. Big Blue Nation tried to hold off a surging Family Way, but the filly caught her at race's end, hitting the wire a neck in front with La Lune surging past Big Blue Nation to take second. Favorite Luck Money was fourth.
