Photo Finish Gives Principe Carlo Victory Over Positivity In Cary Grant

In a tight photo finish with three horses bidding for the win, Principe Carlo got the nod in the Cary Grant Stakes for California breds, the longshot springing the upset at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif.

The field of seven broke in a line, with Colt Fiction showing a head in front first before Fashionably Fast took the lead coming out of the chute. Sprinting out to a short lead, Fashionably Fast had Positivity and Colt Fiction pressing the pace down the backstretch. Around the far turn, jockey Kent Desormeaux angled Principe Carlo to the outside, going four-wide into the stretch with Fashionably Fast, Positivity, and Colt Fiction to his inside.

Down the Del Mar stretch, Fashionably Fast could not hold on to the lead, with Positivity, Colt Fiction, and Principe Carlo coming on to his outside, vying for the lead. Colt Fiction took a short lead midstretch, but Positivity to his inside and Principe Carlo on the outside battled back. The three hit the wire together, a photo finish necessary to determine the winner. In the end, Principe Carlo got the bob, winning by a nose over Positivity, with Colt Fiction a neck back in third. None Above the Law, Peaceful Transfer, Fashionably Fast, and Loud Mouth rounded out the order of finish.

Principe Carlo paid $39.00, $14.00, and $7.00. Positivity paid $4.60 and $3.40. Colt Fiction paid $3.40.

“I knew I'd won it. (Up by a nose in the last jump.) No special instructions for me. Just ride him. The track has been playing better on the outside today so I broke from the 7 and stayed out there the whole race. The horse ran great. He got it done,” jockey Kent Desormeaux said after the Cary Grant.

“My first stakes win anywhere. The horse has a heart of gold and it has been a team effort. We gave him some time off (a year after claiming from Keith Desormeauux in October of 2020) and that's all he needed. This means a lot. All I needed was a chance and people here and at Santa Anita have been very good in giving it to me,” trainer Librado Barocio told the Del Mar press office after the race.

Bred in California by Richard Barton Enterprises, Principe Carlo is by Coil out of the Rahy mare Princess Ezra (GB). The 5-year-old horse is owned by Mia Familia Racing Stable. Principe Carlo was a $4,000 RNA consigned by McCarthy Bloodstock at the 2018 Barretts Equine Limited Spring Two-Year-Olds In Training Sale. His win in the Cary Grant Stakes is the 5-year-old's first in two starts in 2021, for a lifetime record of 22-7-7-0 and career earnings of $367,543.

Silent Runner Graduates To Stakes Winner In Frost King At Woodbine

In a quick turnaround from his last-out win on Nov. 12, Silent Runner bested a field of six other Ontario breds to win the Frost King Stakes at Woodbine Racetrack. The 2-year-old son of Silent Name (JPN) gives his sire another stakes victory at the Toronto, Ontario racetrack, after Ya Mar won the South Ocean Stakes earlier on the card.

After an even break, Where's Neal showed his head first, taking a half-length lead over J M R Best of Turf and Silent Runner down the backstretch. Around the turn, jockey David Moran took Silent Runner to the outside of Where's Neal, the two dueling at the top of the stretch.

Down the Woodbine straight, Silent Runner dug in to pass Where's Neal midstretch, with Sir for Sure and Gatling Gun driving late. Silent Runner had too much momentum, hitting the wire thre-quarters of a length in front of Sir for Sure, who passed Gatling Gun in the race's final strides. Where's Neal held on for fourth.

The final time for the six furlongs over the Tapeta track at Woodbine was 1:16.96. Find this race's chart here.

Silent Runner paid $8.70, $4.50, and $2.80. Sir for Sure paid $7.40 and $4.40. Gatling Gun paid $3.40.

“He's a lovely little horse,” jockey David Moran said after the race. “He's a real ATM machine. I was a little worried coming back so quick with him (a winning performance on November 12). So, he broke really fast and I was there to take him back and get him in behind the speed. He settled lovely and then as you saw, when I asked him, he ran right to the wire. He's a lovely little guy.”

Bred in Ontario by owner C Scott Abbott Racing Stable, Silent Runner is out of the Bold n' Flashy mare Flashy Consort. Trained by Michael Doyle, the 2-year-old colt has three wins and three seconds in seven starts for career earnings of $166,177.

Acclimate, Rockemperor Among Seven Entered For Friday’s Hollywood Turf Cup

Phil D'Amato-trained Acclimate, John Shirreff's Astronaut, and Chad Brown-conditioned Rockemperor, last seen at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif., in the $4 million Grade 1 Longines Breeders' Cup Turf, are among seven entered today for Friday's $250,000 G2 Hollywood Turf Cup.

A victory, or high placing, for Acclimate, Astronaut, or Rockemperor, would salve the sting of ill-starred efforts in the Breeders' Cup, in the case of Astronaut and Rockemperor after gaining entry through “Win and You're In” victories.

Astronaut rallied in the stretch for a half-length victory in the Del Mar Handicap at odds of 24-1 on Pacific Classic Day in August. Hall of Fame jockey Victor Espinoza found no clear path in the BC Turf, however, had to check hard before the quarter pole and finished 12th of 14. Rockemperor won the Turf Classic at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., in October but was in tight quarters throughout in the BC Turf and finished eighth.

Acclimate, with one win and three narrow losses in graded events leading up to the BC Turf, was close to the pace early before fading to last.

The post position draw was scheduled this afternoon. The entrants, in alphabetical order: Acclimate (Ricky Gonzalez); Astronaut (Espinoza); Award Winner (Juan Hernandez); Cupid's Claws (Abel Cedillo); Friar's Road (Umberto Rispoli), Rockemperor (Flavien Prat), and Say The Word (Kent Desormeaux).

Motion Sends Single Soul In Pursuit Of Red Carpet Victory At Del Mar

Maryland-based trainer H. Graham Motion won the 2015 running of the Red Carpet Stakes with Rusty Slipper. Motion's assistant Alice Clapham, who has traveled with his horses to Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif., since 2009 as part of worldwide assignments, was here to do the preparation work and saddling.

That combination, both natives of England, will be seeking a second score in the $100,000 Grade 3 Red Carpet, a 1 3/8-mile race for older fillies and mares on Thanksgiving Day. It's the first of seven graded stakes which make up the four-day Turf Festival to end the Bing Crosby Season.

Single Soul, a 3-year-old English-bred daughter of Dubawi, notched her second win in six career starts in a Belmont Park allowance race on October 22 and has been training since at Motion's facility in Fair Hill, Maryland. The most recent work was Saturday, five furlongs in 1:03 breezing.

Single Soul is scheduled to journey here on Tuesday. Clapham has been at Del Mar since before the Breeders' Cup earlier this month.

“I haven't heard anything about the work, but (Motion) must have been happy with it or he wouldn't have entered her,” Clapham said this morning. “I've been around her before and she's a really sweet filly. She hasn't traveled before but she seems quite sensible, so you'd think she will be OK with it.”

Single Soul had a forgettable debut for trainer Chad Brown on a yielding surface at Belmont a year ago. In five starts for Motion, she has never been off the board, notching a maiden win at Belmont Park in June and the 1 1/8-mile allowance there as an odds-on favorite in a field of six last month.

The Red Carpet will be her first race at the stakes level.

“We think she'll like the longer distance and we know she likes firmer turf,” Clapham said. “You can't really get that in New York right now, so this looks like a nice spot. Graham is sending out some for other races as well, so it kind of works out.”

A field of five was entered Saturday for the Red Carpet. From the rail out with riders in parentheses: England's Rose (Victor Espinoza); Luck (Flavien Prat); Neige Blanche (Juan Hernandez); Single Soul (Joe Bravo), and Nicest (Umberto Rispoli).
