Woodbine: Artie’s Storm Takes On Mighty Heart In Friday’s Dominion Day

Several accomplished runners, including Artie's Storm, Frosted Over, Mighty Heart and Skywire, are set to square off in the Grade 3, $150,000 Dominion Day Stakes, Friday at Woodbine.

The Dominion Day, a 1 1/8-mile main track event, has attracted nine starters.

Fresh off a third straight score, Artie's Storm, a 4-year-old son of We Miss Artie-Tiz Stormy now, heads into his latest stakes engagement off a one-length win in the 1 1/16-mile Grade 2 Eclipse on May 29.

It was the seasonal debut for the Paul Buttigieg trained and owned gelding, who was bred in Ontario by Sunrise Farm.

Under David Moran, the dark bay, sent off at 7-1, tracked the early leaders, sitting third before striking front and going on to record the victory in a time of 1:42.40.

“He came out of the race really well,” said Moran. “He's had a nice, little few weeks and a few works. You couldn't have asked for a better effort. The trip, everything, it was just ideal. We couldn't have written that one any better for him, actually. We went into the race thinking he would need the race and would improve from it. He seems to have come out of it really well and he's had good time in between the races. He seems fresh. He's bucking and playing, and happy in himself. He seems really happy right now.”

Artie's Storm, who went 4-2-2 from nine starts in 2021, arrives at the Dominion Day sporting a 5-2-3 mark from 11 career races.

He capped off his 3-year-old campaign with wins in the Lake Ontario (November) and Steady Growth (December).

“He seems very happy with himself,” said Moran, who was aboard for a four-furlong breeze, in :47.0, over the Woodbine main track on June 26. “Hopefully, he steps up from the last race and does it again. From the get-go, he was a horse I loved. When you get nice horses, they make life easy. They make it fun, and they make it easy. Good horses get you to the good places.”

Mighty Heart, Canada's reigning Horse of The Year – the Ontario-bred also won the award in 2020 – will look to get back in the winner's circle in the race he won last year.

Bred and owned by Larry Cordes, the multiple stakes winning son of Dramedy-Emma's Bullseye was third in this year's Eclipse.

The lifetime winner of six races, along with a pair of seconds and four thirds from 18 starts, finished third in the Grade 3 Harlan's Holiday to conclude his 4-year-old campaign. Mighty Heart was sixth in the Grade 3 Ben Ali in April before coming back to Woodbine for the Eclipse.

Trained by Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame inductee Josie Carroll, the one-eyed fan favourite won the first two jewels, the Queen's Plate and Prince of Wales Stakes, of the 2020 Canadian Triple Crown.

Conditioner Mark Casse will be well represented in the Dominion Day, sending out the trio of Frosted Over, Skywire and Talbeyah (IRE), who made his North American debut a winning one (a 1 1/16-mile main track score at Woodbine on May 21) after seven starts in England.

The Dominion Day is listed as race six on Friday afternoon's nine-race card. First post in 1:10 p.m. Fans can watch and wager on all the action through HPIbet.com and the Dark Horse Bets app.

William and Corrine Heiligbrodt, Jackpot Farm and Whispering Oaks Farm's impressive seven-length maiden winner Gulfport will try stakes company against a field of six signed on for Monday's $175,000 Bashford Manor (Listed) at Churchill Downs.

The 121st running of the Bashford Manor will go as Race 6 of 9 with a post time of 3:18 p.m. Monday's closing day card will also feature the $175,000 Debutante (Listed) and the $175,000 Hanshin presented by the JRA (Listed).

Trained by Steve Asmussen, Gulfport dazzled on debut three weeks ago at Churchill Downs. The bay son of Uncle Mo dominated eight other juveniles as the heavy 1-2 favorite, completed five furlongs in a swift :56.85 and earned a solid 92 Brisnet Speed Rating. Jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. will be in the saddle from post No. 1.

Another promising 2-year-old that entered the Bashford Manor is Susan Moulton's debut winner Andthewinneris. Trained by Wayne Catalano, Andthewinneris caught the eyes of many in his first start at Keeneland when he closed from 7 ¾ lengths off the early pace to win by two lengths under jockey Flavien Prat. The bay son of Oscar Performance has worked twice at Churchill Downs including a swift half-mile move in :46.80, the best of 155 horses at the distance on June 18. James Graham will have the mount in the Bashford Manor from post 3.

Here's the Bashford Manor field from the rail out (with jockey and trainer):

  1. Gulfport (Brian Hernandez Jr., Steve Asmussen)

It shares the holiday racing spotlight with the $175,000 Bashford Manor (Listed) and $175,000 Hanshin presented by the JRA (Listed).

Wonder Wheel, trained by the elder Casse for D.J. Stable, cruised to a 2 ¼-length debut triumph on June 3 at Churchill Downs. The daughter of Into Mischief has worked twice since her maiden victory including a swift :46.40 half-mile move Saturday, the best of 125 works recorded at the distance. Churchill Downs' leading rider Tyler Gaffalione will be back aboard from post No. 3.

Norm Casse is set to take on his father with one of his top 2-year-old filly prospects in Les Bon Temps. Nobody Listens Goes All The Way In Brickyard

Nobody Listens had everyone's attention Wednesday, June 29, in the 26th running of the $100,000 Brickyard Stakes at Horseshoe Indianapolis. The flashy grey gelding, ridden by Joe Ramos, used a power move early and was on his way to his first career stakes win.

The outside post 11 didn't deter Nobody Listens a bit. The 4-year-old gelding rallied out of the gate on top from the extreme outside and had plenty of room to cross over to the lead. Trained by Marvin Johnson, the gelding kept up his momentum around the turn and in the stretch, nobody was closing in. Nobody Listens hit another gear and pulled away from the field for the win by six lengths in 1:10.03. Flowerpecker and Emmanuel Esquivel finished second over Meetmeinkingston and Romero Maragh for third.

Nobody Listens was the second choice on the board, paying $6.00 to win. He is owned by local residents Matt Kwiatkowski, Jason Kaylor and Roger Browning. Kwiatkowski and Browning have owned him since he began his racing career. It was the second stakes win this year for the Kaylor, Kwiatkowski, and Browning partnership. Earlier this season, they connected with Too Bad Justice in the Sagamore Sired Stakes, also trained by Johnson and ridden by Ramos.

Outside of his first career start, Ramos has been aboard Nobody Listens in 13 of his 14 career starts. He now boasts a start line of seven wins and five seconds, all under Ramos.

“It was a good post for us,” said Ramos. “We took the blinkers off a couple starts ago, and it's made a big difference. With the blinkers on he was confused about when to run. He came out of the gate well and when we were in the stretch, I checked where they (other horses) were, and I asked him. He took off just like he did out of the gate. He's got a lot of speed and he can run all day. I want to thank the owners and Marvin (Johnson) for letting me ride him. Plus, my mom (Glory) was here today from Puerto Rico. It doesn't get any better than that.”

Nobody Listens increased his career bankroll to more than $282,000. He is now two for four with two second place finishes in 2022. He has only finished off the board twice in his career.

The 20th season of live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing extends through Wednesday, Nov. 23. Live racing is conducted at 2:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday with Thursday post times set for 2:10 p.m. A total of 12 Saturdays will feature live racing in 2022 highlighted by the 28th running of the Grade 3 $300,000 Indiana Derby and the 27th running of the Grade 3 $200,000 Indiana Oaks set for Saturday, July 9.
