Alms Chasing Elusive Victory In $100,000 Big Dreyfus At Laurel Park

Godolphin's 5-year-old homebred mare Alms, winless since opening her career with four consecutive victories including a pair of graded stakes, will chase an elusive fifth career triumph in Saturday's $100,000 Big Dreyfus at Laurel Park.

The third running of the Big Dreyfus for fillies and mares three and older and the $100,000 Prince George's County for 3-year-olds and up, both scheduled for 1 1/8 miles on the grass, are among four stakes worth $450,000 in purses highlighted by the $150,000 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash for 3-year-olds and up sprinting six furlongs on the main track.

Rounding out the stakes action is the $100,000 Alma North for fillies and mares 3 and up at 6 ½ furlongs. All four races are part of the Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred Championship (MATCH) Series.

Post time for the first of 11 races is 12:40 p.m.

Alms won the 2019 Grade 3 Matron at Belmont Park and G3 Jimmy Durante at Del Mar to cap a perfect 3-0 juvenile campaign. She opened her sophomore season with another win in the 2020 Shantel Lanerie Memorial at Fair Grounds but has been blanked since, placing three times in her last nine starts including a second in the inaugural G3 Pegasus Filly and Mare Turf Jan. 29 at Gulfstream Park and the 2020 G3 Appalachian, where she was third by a head.

Most recently, Alms raced between horses early and ultimately settled inside but trailed her six rivals into the stretch before making a belated move to be fifth, beaten 4 ¾ lengths, in the 1 1/16-mile G3 Eatontown June 18 at Monmouth Park. Finishing last in that race was her stablemate, Princess Grace, who came back to win the G3 Dr. James Penny Memorial for the second straight year July 12 at Parx and become a millionaire.

“She had a real crazy trip last time [racing] last behind a crawling pace. She was supposed to be either on the lead or either sitting right there,” trainer Michael Stidham said. “She made a little run and made up some ground, but had no chance. Princess Grace had the same kind of trip and she came back to win the stake at Parx by three [lengths], so that tells you a little bit about that [Monmouth] race.

“We're expecting Alms to hopefully bounce back and have a big race on Saturday,” he added. “We're hoping to finally get her to win a race.”

Alms has won twice at both one mile and six furlongs and has yet to race beyond 1 1/16 miles, but Stidham is confident the granddaughter of 2003 Belmont Stakes winner Empire Maker can handle the added distance.

“We've been thinking for a while about trying stretch her to a mile and an eighth,” he said. “She's got that natural speed, so I think she'll be close up. She doesn't really seem to have any real distance limitations. She's obviously handled the mile and a sixteenth well, so I don't think the mile and an eighth will be a problem.”

Jevian Toledo gets the riding assignment on Alms from Post 1 in a field of 10.

Entered to defend her Big Dreyfus victory from last summer is Fiasco Farms, Ltd.'s Tightly Twisted. The 6-year-old Hard Spun turned back heavily favored Counterparty Risk by a half-length at odds of 9-1 for her second career stakes win. She has raced just four times since, running fifth in the June 14 Neshaminy at Parx in her season debut and first race in eight months.

William Pape's Deciding Vote was beaten 1 ½ lengths when fourth in the 1 1/16-mile Neshaminy, his second start of the year following a half-length triumph in the one-mile Dahlia April 23 over the Laurel turf. The 5-year-old daughter of Mr Speaker has two wins, one second and one third in seven career tries at Laurel, where she was third by a neck in a 1 1/8-mile optional claiming allowance over yielding ground last fall.

Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey trained Grade 1-winning millionaire Mr Speaker to four graded-stakes wins including the 2015 G3 Commonwealth Cup at Laurel, and is represented in the Big Dreyfus by Stuart Janney III's homebred In a Hurry. The 5-year-old Blame mare was second as the favorite in the Dahlia and most recently third behind Technical Analysis and subsequent G2 Nassau winner Crystal Cliffs in the May 21 G3 Gallorette at Pimlico.

Merriebelle Stable's Bellagamba won the 2020 G1 Enrique Acebal and G2 Federico de Alvear in her native Argentina, both going 1 ¼ miles, but has yet to find success since coming to the U.S. last year. She was second twice, in a Keeneland allowance and the Blushing K.D. at Fair Grounds, last fall and winter, and was third in the Joseph R. Peluso Memorial at Fair Grounds and the Romacaca June 18 at Hawthorne, her lone start this year.

“She didn't have a good trip. She had an inside post [and] she doesn't like that much,” trainer Ignacio 'Nacho' Correas IV said.  “We added some cheater [blinkers] so we're hoping that helps her a little bit more, that little bit of help that she needs to win. I think that she's sitting on a big race. We'll see. I'm very happy with the way she's doing.”

Though his 5-year-old mare has yet to find the winner's circle in North America, Correas is proud of the efforts Bellagamba has put forth. She has been beaten a total of 8 ¼ lengths in her five U.S. runs, and came within a neck of beating Grade 3 winner Summer in Saratoga in the Blushing K.D.

“Summer in Saratoga is a very accomplished mare. She put up a good fight and she lost on the wire,” Correas said. “All the other races she never has a trip that you can say, 'This one was perfect.' I don't to say she had an excuse because she always runs well. Her second time in Fair Grounds she was way far and had too much to do and I don't think that she's that kind of horse. So we are adding those cheater blinkers to see if we can focus her a little bit more and get some stuff out of her way and let her focus more on what she has to do.”

Vincent Cheminaud will ride Bellagamba from Post 4.

Juddmonte homebred Petricor, an English-bred 4-year-old daughter of Frankel, will make her third U.S. start and seventh overall in the Big Dreyfus for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott. Group 3-placed in France last spring, she won an April 24 allowance at Keeneland in her North American debut and rallied to be fourth as the favorite following a belated start in the June 5 G3 Mint Julep, both going 1 1/16 miles on the grass.

Also entered are Coconut Cake, third by less than a length in the 1 1/16-mile All Brandy June 19 over the Laurel turf; Fool Yourself, coming off a one-mile allowance win on Laurel's main track June 11; Double Fireball, sixth in the Dahlia; and Tic Tic Tic Boom, making a four-day turnaround after running fifth in the Penny Memorial.

Michelle Lovell Has Morning Line Favorites In Both Colonial Downs’ Monday Stakes

Two of the classier horses from trainer Michelle Lovell's stable have each earned morning line favoritism in a pair of $150,000 open turf sprints this Monday, July 18, at Colonial Downs in New Kent, Va. Just Might, who will become a million-dollar earner with a win in the Van Clief Stakes, is 8-5 in the early odds while her Change of Control, with $833,725 in earnings, is 3-1 choice in the Andy Guest Stakes. They will be contested as the sixth and eighth races on a nine-race program.

Michelle Lovell and Griffon Farms' Just Might could have an edge in the eight-horse Van Clief based on a pair of stakes wins last summer at the New Kent track. The versatile 6-year-old Justin Phillip gelding won the six-furlong Chesapeake Stakes on dirt in the Mid Atlantic Thoroughbred Championship Series (MATCH) competition and also scored in the 5-1/2 furlong Da Hoss Stakes on turf. Just Might is fresh off a gate-to-wire victory in the Mighty Beau Stakes at Churchill, a race he won in 2021 as well. The five-furlong 2022 edition — which he won by two lengths — was taken off the turf. Rafael Bejarano will ride Monday from post 3.

George Sharp's Front Run the Fed is second in the line at 4-1. The 6-year-old Fed Biz horse has not raced since October. In 2020, he had a very respectable sixth-place finish in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, finishing just 2 1/2 lengths behind winner Glass Slippers. Front Run the Fed comes to Colonial with career earnings of $405,793. Multiple Eclipse Award-winning jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. will ride for trainer Caio Caramori.

Crown's Way Racing LLC and NBS Stable's Smokin' Jay fits well in this spot. The Kelsey Danner trainee is stakes-placed in five of his last seven stakes starts. The 4-year-old Cairo Prince colt won the Allied Forces Stakes at Belmont last September and most recently was eighth in the Grade 1 Jaipur Stakes, also at Belmont. Adam Beschizza will ride the Kentucky-bred from post six.

Perry Harrison's Change of Control, 3-1 early favorite in the Andy Guest for fillies and mares, was fourth in the recent Jaipur and finished just three lengths behind. The 6-year-old Fed Biz mare collected a pair of Grade 3 stakes wins in 2021 from the Intercontinental at Belmont in June and the Franklin County Stakes at Keeneland in October. Colby Hernandez, who rode Just Might to both Colonial stakes wins last summer, will be in the irons here for Lovell.

Klein Racing's Goin' Good, stakes placed in her last three at Churchill, Keeneland and Fair Grounds respectively, is listed at 4-1. The 4-year-old daughter of Congrats was third in the Unbridled Sidney and Giant's Causeway Stakes and second in the Mardi Gras. The Brad Cox trainee has been in-the-money in 9 of 11 career starts and has bankrolled $277,761.

CJ Thoroughbreds' Jeanie B impressed in both the '22 and '21 Grade 2 Royal North Stakes at Woodbine with respective defeats by a length and a nose. Two starts back, the 5-year-old Great Britain-bred was a neck shy in Woodbine's Long Branch Stakes. Reylu Gutierrez will ride for trainer Cam Gambolati from post 7.

The current Colonial Downs summer meet opened July 11 and will continue through September 7 with racing every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 1:45 PM. An average of $625,000 in purse monies will be distributed daily. The track is offering a daily Pick-5 wager with a low 12% takeout and a carryover element for the first time ever. The bet covers the last five races on the card.

‘Raw Talent’: Just Cindy Prevails In Opening Day Schuylerville At Saratoga

Clarkland Farm's Kentucky homebred Just Cindy outdueled Summer Promise in a spirited stretch battle to capture Thursday's Grade 3, $175,000 Schuylerville, a six-furlong sprint for juvenile fillies on Opening Day at Saratoga Race Course.

Trained by Eddie Kenneally and piloted by Irad Ortiz, Jr., the Justify bay entered from a 2 1/4-length debut score in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight on June 17 at Churchill Downs.

Musicmansandy led the field of seven through splits of 22.38 seconds and 45.90 over the fast main track with regally-bred maiden winner Summer Promise stalking from second position and Just Cindy saving ground in third to the inside of Me and My Shadow.

Summer Promise advanced with purpose through the turn with Just Cindy tipping outside the fading pacesetter with an outside rush as the two rivals met up at the top of the lane. Just Cindy put a head in front of Summer Promise at the stretch call and the two rivals matched strides until Just Cindy took over inside the final furlong to secure the 2 1/4-length win in a final time of 1:11.95.

It was two lengths further back to maiden Janis Joplin, who won the show battle by three-quarters of a length over fellow Mark Casse trainee Me and My Shadow. Rounding out the order of finish was Vedareo, who bobbled at the start, Musicmansandy and Adora. Sweet Harmony and Motown Mischief were scratched.

Irad Ortiz, Jr., who recently secured his 19th NYRA riding title after posting 48 wins at the Belmont spring/summer meet, said he was impressed with his first experience aboard Just Cindy.

“The filly is really nice. She does everything right,” Ortiz, Jr. said. “From the one post, she overcame everything and got there on time. When I asked her at the quarter pole, she did it.”

The win marked the third graded victory at Saratoga for Kenneally, who captured the Grade 3 Sanford in 2016 [Bitumen] and 2019 [By Your Side].
Kelly Wheeler, assistant to Kenneally, said she appreciated Just Cindy's tenacity in the stretch run.

“She kind of got knocked around a little bit and she stayed professional and ran on,” Wheeler said. “It's really all you can ask for in a second-time starter.

“I think she'll go longer – I don't think that will be an issue at all. We kind of thought the added distance today wouldn't be an issue at all, and it wasn't.

“It was great and I think she's still a little green too, so I think there's a lot of raw talent there.”

Summer Promise, a dark bay daughter of Uncle Mo trained by Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas, was purchased for $500,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Out of Grade 1-winning millionaire Dream of Summer, Summer Promise is a half-sister to Grade 1-winners Creative Cause and Vexatious.

She entered from a facile five-length score under David Cohen in a June 25 maiden special weight at Churchill Downs.

Luis Saez, who picked up the mount, said Summer Promise should improve with experience.

“She sat second in good position. She came to the top of the stretch and kind of waited a little for the other one,” Saez said. “But she did good. She's going to be better next time.”

Out of the stakes-winning Proud Citizen mare Jenda's Agenda, Just Cindy banked $96,250 in victory. She returned $6.20 for a $2 win bet.

Live racing resumes on Friday at Saratoga with a 10-race card, featuring the $150,000 Coronation Cup in Race 8 and the Grade 3, $175,000 Forbidden Apple in Race 9. First post is 1:05 p.m. Eastern.

Saratoga: Tarabi Christens Redesigned Wilson Chute With First Stakes Win

The one-mile Wilson Chute at Saratoga Race Course was christened on Opening Day Thursday with a sharp victory by LBD Stable, Manganaro Bloodstock and David Ingordo's Tarabi in the first running of the $135,000 Wilton for sophomore fillies.

Trained by Cherie DeVaux, the daughter of First Samurai kept a perfect in-the-money record intact with her off-the-pace victory under Hall of Famer Javier Castellano, scoring the first stakes win of her career after two Grade 1 placings as a juvenile.

Sent from post 6 as the 6-5 favorite in the field of 7, Tarabi broke well and was settled behind the pace set by Angitude with Gina Romantica tracking to her inside in third. Castellano sat calmly aboard Tarabi as Angitude marked splits of 24.75 seconds for the opening quarter mile and 48.70 for the half-mile over the fast main track.

Tarabi inched closer to Angitude as the field rounded the turn, chipping away at the pacesetter's precarious lead before the two matched strides at the top of the lane. Tarabi came away with the lead at the eighth pole as a stubborn Angitude was left to battle on for place with the rail-skimming Goddess of Fire, who split rivals and showed a good turn of foot under Hall of Famer John Velazquez.

Tarabi kept to task with a few taps of the crop from Castellano, reaching the wire three-quarter lengths the best in a final time of 1:38.53. Goddess of Fire got her head down to secure place honors over Angitude, who finished 6 1/4-lengths in front of Gina Romantica in fourth. Favor, St Maarten Girl and A Mo Reay rounded out the order of finish. Sweet Solare and Let's Be Clear were scratched.

DeVaux said that a good break made the difference for Tarabi.

“On paper, some of the speed horses had scratched out of the race. We were trying to figure out what works best for her and her running style,” DeVaux said. “She had been on the chase from a bad break or hitting the gate. It was nice to see that she settled, came with a run and she persevered through the wire.”

Castellano said he was pleased with the way Tarabi broke from the new Wilson Chute.

“It felt great. There was plenty of room,” Castellano said. “I liked the way my horse did it and fell into the race. Tuesday's test run absolutely helped.”

A debut winner in August at Ellis Park, Tarabi posted two impressive placings in Grade 1 company behind subsequent Champion 2-Year-Old Filly Echo Zulu in the Spinaway at the Spa and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Del Mar in her first start beyond the sprint distance. Her other start this year was a good second in a seven-furlong optional claimer in June at Churchill Downs.

With her first stakes victory now on her resume, Tarabi may make the step back up to Grade 1 company next time out in the seven-furlong $500,000 Longines Test on August 6 at Saratoga.

“The Test is definitely what our goal would be so we're going to have to shorten her back up, but she had a race over the track and she's run two good races here,” said DeVaux. “It gives you a lot of confidence to point towards a race like that.”

Bred in Kentucky by Hinkle Farms, Tarabi returned $4.40 for a $2 win wager and banked $74,250 for her victory, boosting her total purse earnings to $370,250. Out of the Indian Charlie mare Indian Bay, Tarabi is a full-sister to Japanese Group 3-winner Shivaji and was purchased for $240,000 at the 2020 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Velazquez said he had hoped for more pace for Goddess of Fire to run into.

“I had to come out running to get a little position. They went pretty slow, so I was forced to be where I was,” Velazquez said.

Live racing resumes on Friday at Saratoga with a 10-race card, featuring the $150,000 Coronation Cup in Race 8 and the Grade 3, $175,000 Forbidden Apple in Race 9. First post is 1:05 p.m. Eastern.
