Tizamagician Bids For Cougar II Repeat At Del Mar

MyRacehorse & Spendthrift Farm's Tizamagician, a 2 1/4-length winner of the Cougar II Stakes marathon last summer at Del Mar, will try to do it again this Sunday as the shore track presents the 71st running of the 12-panel headliner.

The 5-year-old full horse by champion Tiznow races out of Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella's barn, and invariably that's a good thing for a racehorse. Especially one who likes to run on like Tizamagician does.

All told there will be seven runners in the Grade 3 feature that carries a purse of $125,000. The races goes as No. 8 on an 11-race program that will be the concluding day of sport in the first week of action of summer season No. 83 at Del Mar.

The Kentucky-bred Tizamagician has been nothing if not consistent throughout his career as shown by his five wins and nine seconds in 21 starts. He's banked $683,851 in total and has been tabbed the 8-5 morning line favorite Sunday with Juan Hernandez up.

Last year Tizamagician used his Cougar II victory as a springboard for a go in the $1-million, Grade 1 TVG Pacific Classic where he ran one of the best races of his career, but had to settle for second money behind winner Tripoli. The TVG Pacific Classic is on Saturday, Sept. 3 this year and Mandella might be thinking of plotting a similar course.

Chief threat to the favorite appears to be Hronis Racing's Heywoods Beach, a 5-year-old Speightstown horse who is coming in off a fourth-place finish in the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile on May 30 at Santa Anita. All told he's a winner of $214,251 in purses and his last victory came at a mile and one half at Santa Anita on May 15. Del Mar newcomer Ramon Vazquez has the call.

Here's the full field for the Cougar II from the rail out with riders and morning line odds:  Red Baron's Barn or Rancho Temescal's Dicey Mo Chara (Drayen Van Dyke, 4-1); Tizamagician; Heywoods Beach; Jay Em Ess Stable's Extra Hope (Tyler Baze, 4-1); David Bernsen, Buckendorf, et al's Order and Law (Umberto Rispoli, 12-1); David Bernsen's Dean Matini (Edwin Maldonado, 8-1), and Boat Racing and Fritz Brothers Racing's Win the Day (Diego Herrera, 20-1).

Also on the card is a nifty overnight event – it goes as Race 9 — known as the Wickerr Stakes that has brought out a baker's dozen for a run at a mile on the turf course. There's a standout in the crowd in the multiple-stakes winning millionaire Smooth Like Strait, who races in the colors of Cannon Thoroughbreds. Trainer Michael McCarthy has tabbed top rider Juan Hernandez to take the controls for what may be an attempt to get past a six-race streak of finished very close up in major races, but not making the winner's circle. The morning line says he's 6/5 to find it Sunday.

Balnikhov Takes Oceanside On Del Mar Opener That Breaks Wagering Record

Little Red Feather Racing, Madaket Stables or Old Bones Racing's Balnikhov came from far back with a solid run through traffic and drew clear late to capture the 77th edition of the $100,000 Oceanside Stakes Friday as Del Mar began its 83rd summer run under blue skies and sweet breezes Friday in Del Mar, Calif.

The seaside track limited its Opening Day attendance to 21,680, but there was no limit to the wagering that went through the wickets on the 11-race card. The track took in $23.56 million for a new Opening Day handle record, besting the $21.30 million mark that was established in 2021.

The Irish-bred Balnikhov was a length and a half to the good at the wire in 1:34.85 for the mile on grass. The gelding was handled by grass ace Umberto Rispoli and was saddled by three-time Del Mar training champ Phil D'Amato.

Finishing second in the Oceanside was Peter Redekop's Anmer Hall, who had three quarters of a length on Drakos or Hanson's Barsabas.

The winner paid $8.40, $5.00 and $3.80 across the board. Anmer Hall returned $26.20 and $14.60, while Barsabas paid $18.80.

Balnikhov picked up a check for $60,000, increasing his career earnings to $238,905. It was his fourth win in his 12th start.

The riding star on the day was Juan Hernandez with a trio of victories.

UMBERTO RISPOLI (Balnikhov, winner) – “That was an amazing trip. I was all the way on the outside on the backstretch, so I said 'I think I'm losing too much ground here' and I went down inside. From there it happened. I love this race (Oceanside). In the three years I've ridden it, I've won it twice and been second. I've got a new baby in the family. I'm a blessed man.”

PHIL D'AMATO (Balnikhov, winner) – “You know we got pace in the race, sat a good trip and was able to use his turn of foot late and got the job done. Umberto (Rispoli) fits this horse well. Just get him to settle, save ground and then come with his run.  I think that's the key to this horse. Probably wait until the Del Mar Derby but we could possibly go in the La Jolla. We'll just have to play it by ear and see how he comes out of the race.”

FRACTIONS:  :22.62  :46.30 1:10.91  1:23.26  1:34.85

The stakes win was the first of the meet for all parties involved.

It was the second win in the Oceanside (Hit the Road, 2020) for rider Rispoli and his 13th stakes victory at Del Mar.

It was the second win in the Oceanside (Bowies Hero, 2017) for trainer D'Amato and his 36th stakes win at Del Mar overall.

The winner is owned by the Little Red Feather partnership (headed by Billy Koch of Woodland Hills, CA); Madaket Stables (Sol Kumin of New York City), and Old Bones Racing (Andrew Molasky of Las Vegas).

Dolce Zel Leads 1-2 Lake George Finish For Chad Brown

Madaket Stables, Michael Dubb and Robert V. LaPenta's Dolce Zel overcame several obstacles to come out on the winning end of a photo finish with stablemate Eminent Victor in Friday's Grade 3, $200,000 Lake George for 3-year-old fillies going one mile over the inner turf at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Neither a slow start nor traffic trouble could stop Dolce Zel from earning her second graded stakes triumph with a ground saving trip under Irad Ortiz, Jr.

The French-bred daughter of Zelzal lacked racing room around the far turn into the mid-stretch, but found a seam a long the rail to win by a nose, providing trainer Chad Brown with a sixth, and fourth straight, Lake George coup.

“It's one of the many turf races up here at the meet that we really point towards,” Brown said. “We've had the horses and the staff to get them ready. Both jockeys did their very best today. Through the years it's been a very rewarding race to point towards.”

Al Qahira broke on top, racing in tandem with Gulfstream Park invader Sister Lou Ann into the first turn as Dolce Zel, who broke a step slow from post 4, settled a rail-skimming third, Al Qahira led through a moderate opening quarter-mile in 24.13 seconds over the firm going.

Positions remained unchanged through a half-mile in 48.33 as Dolce Zel continued to save ground from third with Eminent Victor launching a sweeping bid on the outside from the three-to-four path around the far turn.

With Al Qahira still to catch, Ortiz, Jr. attempted to move in between horses past the quarter-pole in upper stretch, but lacked racing room. Ortiz, Jr. then took Dolce Zel back to the rail as Al Qahira began to waver with Eminent Victor surging forward in the clear on the far outside. The final sixteenth of a mile saw Dolce Zel and Eminent Victor battle it out with the former getting her nose on the wire in a final time of 1:35.64.

It was another 1 3/4 lengths back to Koala Princess, who charged late for third, a neck over Al Qahira. Completing the order of finish were Skims, Sister Lou Ann, Spirit And Glory and Heavenly Hellos. Republique was scratched.

Entering off a distant third as the lukewarm favorite in the Grade 2 Edgewood on May 6 at Churchill Downs, Dolce Zel visited the winner's circle for the first time since her North American debut where she finished a head to the better of stablemate Spicer in the 1 1/16-mile Grade 3 Florida Oaks on March 12 at Tampa Bay Downs.

Ortiz, Jr., who has piloted Dolce Zel in all four of her stateside starts, said her small stature came in handy.

“She's tiny and that helps a little because there was not too much room, but that was the only choice [to stay inside], so I [went] for it,” Ortiz, Jr. said. “She got through, and after she got through, she put her head down and fought with the other one. It worked out good.”

Brown said the close finish was fitting, as he believed both fillies had an equally legitimate chance.

“People asked me all day walking around the track, 'Who do you like? Who do you like in this race between them?'” Brown said. “I think I told them all the truth – it's close. And it proved to almost be a dead heat. These situations are unfortunate that there has to be a loser because both horses ran so good. We almost got that, 'I'll get it one day.' A dead heat here at Saratoga. You get two wins for that. Both horses ran terrific.

“Although she had trouble, [Dolce Zel] had a ground-saving trip and reserved so much energy that when they reached for the wire, she just had a little bit more there,” Brown added. “Eminent Victor stumbled at the start and had a wide run in the final turn and it might have just took a little bit of the fuel out of her that last 70 yards where she couldn't really accelerate past everybody. I think that was the difference.”

Brown said the Grade 2, $200,000 Lake Placid going just a half-furlong extra on August 20 at the Spa could be in play for both Dolce Zel and Eminent Victor. The four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer swept both events last year with Klaravich Stables' Technical Analysis.

“Dolce Zel has always struck me as best at a mile. Of course, she was able to be effective at a mile and a sixteenth,” Brown said. “Eminent Victor looks like as she develops, she'll run a bit further. Both of these horses could end up back in the Lake Placid.”

Dolce Zel, who returned $8.60 for a $2 win bet, brought her lifetime earnings up to $307,155 and record to 6-3-1-1.

Flavien Prat said Eminent Victor's chances where hindered by her troubled start.

“You always want to break and get a clean break, but it wasn't as bad as it could've been,” Prat said. “She bobbled out of the gate, but she recovered well and I was in a good position without rushing her so it was fine.”

Live racing resumes on Saturday at Saratoga with an 11-race card, featuring the Grade 1, $500,000 Coaching Club American Oaks in Race 5 and the Grade 3, $200,000 Caress in Race 10. First post is 1:05 p.m. Eastern.

Grade 1 Winner Bella Sofia Streaks Into Wednesday’s Honorable Miss

Michael Imperio, Medallion Racing, Sofia Soares, Vincent Scuderi, and Parkland Thoroughbreds' Bella Sofia returns to the site of her first Grade 1 score in Wednesday's Grade 2, $200,000 Honorable Miss Handicap, a six-furlong sprint for older fillies and mares at Saratoga Race Course.

Trained by Rudy Rodriguez, the 4-year-old Awesome Patriot dark bay made her graded debut a winning one last summer, drawing off to a 4 1/4-length score in the seven-furlong Grade 1 Longines Test.

She returns Wednesday off a pair of graded wins at Belmont Park for the first of two expected starts at the Spa, including the Grade 1, $500,000 Ballerina Handicap on August 28 at the Spa, a “Win and You're In” for the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.

“The Breeders' Cup is our ultimate goal,” Rodriguez said. “To see her come back the way she's doing is a plus. Sometimes, it's difficult for horses from 3-to-4, but her coming back and doing the same thing as last year is special for us.”

Bella Sofia made her seasonal debut in the 6 1/2-furlong Grade 3 Vagrancy on May 14 off a six-month layoff, battling to the wire with returning rival Frank's Rockette to prevail by a nose.

Last out, Bella Sofia made every pole a winning one, staving off Grade 1-winner Obligatory for a half-length win in the seven-furlong Grade 2 Bed o' Roses on June 10.

Rodriguez said Bella Sofia has trained forwardly out of the Bed o' Roses, including a bullet five-eighths breeze in 59.20 under regular pilot Luis Saez on July 16 over the Saratoga main track.

“It was a good work,” Rodriguez said. “I wanted to have a nice work, so I let Luis breeze her. She might blow out again tomorrow. She's ready to go. She looks like she came back good out of the race.

“She's a lot more mature this year. She's stronger,” Rodriguez added. “She lets you do a lot more things. She's getting older and I think that helps us.”

Bella Sofia followed up her Test win last summer with a 3 1/2-length score over Lady Rocket in the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom Handicap in September at Belmont ahead of a fourth-place finish in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint in November at Del Mar while making the sixth start of her sophomore campaign.

While there is other speed signed on in the compact four-horse field, Rodriguez said he is confident Saez, last year's leading rider at the Spa, will work out a trip.

“She's a very good horse out of the gate. There's going to be a lot of speed this time, but Luis knows her very well,” Rodriguez said. “I think she can sit. She doesn't necessarily need the lead, but she always breaks very good. It may not make sense for us to try and change things at this stage. If the race presents different, then Luis has to use his own judgment. He's one of the best jockeys in the country and he knows the filly very well. We just have to bring her over in the best way we can and everything else is in God's hands.”

Bella Sofia, assigned a field-high 125 pounds, will leave post 2 under Saez.

Frank Fletcher Racing Operations' Frank's Rockette will look to turn the tables on Bella Sofia for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott. The 5-year-old Into Mischief bay has completed the exacta in both starts this year after running second to Acting Out in the Carousel in April at Oaklawn Park.

Frank's Rockette has proven to be extremely effective at the Spa, finishing second in both the Grade 2 Adirondack and Grade 1 Spinaway as a juvenile in 2019. She added the 2020 Grade 2 Prioress to her ledger here just two months after making the grade in the Grade 3 Victory Ride at Belmont.

Last year, Frank's Rockette picked up stakes wins in the American Beauty at Oaklawn and the Saylorville at Prairie Meadows in an eight-start campaign that included graded-placings in the Grade 3 Winning Colors at Churchill Downs and the Grade 3 Sugar Swirl at Gulfstream Park.

Frank's Rockette will carry 121 pounds when exiting the inside post under Flavien Prat, who was aboard for both starts this season.

Westerberg, Mrs. John Magnier, Jonathan Poulin, Derrick Smith and Michael Tabor's graded-stakes winner Kimari, a 5-year-old Munnings bay, will make her Spa dirt debut for trainer Wesley Ward.

The versatile Kimari boasts multiple wins on dirt and turf led by a three-quarter length score in last year's seven-furlong Grade 1 Madison over the Keeneland main track, besting graded-stakes winner Estilo Talentoso and multiple graded-stakes winner Bell's the One, who dead-heated for place.

She exited the Madison to finish a closing seventh in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at five furlongs in November at Del Mar to close out a three-start campaign that included a score in the Spring Fever at Oaklawn.

Kimari has made three starts this season, taking an optional-claimer in March at Gulfstream ahead of a third-place effort when defending her title in the Grade 1 Madison in April at Keeneland. She enters from an even fifth-place finish in the seven-furlong Grade 1 Derby City Distaff on May 7 at Churchill Downs.

Ward said he drew a line through her most recent effort.

“She was coming back on short rest and there's a big difference between Churchill's main surface and Keeneland. I think she'll run a big race here,” Ward said.

Kimari breezed five-eighths over the Oklahoma training track on Thursday in 1:01.31.

“She's had some really nice spacing and some great workouts at Keeneland,” Ward said. “And then she had a nice breeze here yesterday on the Oklahoma track.”

Joel Rosario, aboard for the Grade 1 score, retains the mount from post 4 and Ward said he is hopeful the expected speed will benefit Kimari [123 pounds].

“Joel has ridden her great in all of her races. Historically, she breaks slow, so we'll let the speed go,” Ward said. “It's a six-furlong sprint, but there's some fast ones in there.”

Ohio-bred Amadevil, trained and co-owned by David Wolochuk with Blue Snow Racing Stables, has won 7-of-8 starts beginning with an eye-opening 24 1/4-length debut win last June at Thistledown, covering five furlongs in 57.48.

“It was quick,” said Wolochuk of the debut that garnered a 94 Beyer Speed Figure. “We always thought she'd have talent for the Ohio-bred program.”

Unraced as a juvenile, the 4-year-old Dominus bay launched her career with a five-race win streak against fellow state-breds at Thistledown, taking the Michael G. Mackey Memorial Angenora in September and the Scarlet and Gray Handicap in October.

Amadevil traveled to Mahoning Valley in November for the six-furlong First Lady, battling for the lead with Esplanade through a quarter-mile in 22.30 before taking over after a half-mile in 45.33, but could not turn back the rally of Tivis, who prevailed by 1 1/2-lengths.

She avenged that lone defeat with a 1 1/2-length score in her seasonal debut in an eventful six-furlong open-company allowance under regular rider Chelsey Keiser at Thistledown in which Tivis settled for third.

“They loaded her last and she never got set and she went straight up in the air. She got herself left about five lengths,” Wolochuk said. “Then she went all the way to the outside rail. The jock lost her irons for about two jumps out of there and then she recovered and they won. No harm, no foul. The good ones overcome me, the rider and all the rest of it.”

Last out, Amadevil drew off to a 5 3/4-length score in the restricted Best of Ohio Diana on June 3 at Belterra.

Wolochuk will now look to saddle his first graded winner in just his third attempt as he sends his first horse to Saratoga. He said the start in the Honorable Miss is the culmination of a long-range plan.

“We mapped out a plan last year and have stuck to it. We thought she was immature as a 3-year-old and sent her down to Ocala for the winter,” Wolochuk said. “She's really matured and filled out. I'm really happy with where she is. Training wise, she's better now than she's ever been.”

Jose Ortiz picks up the mount from post 3 on Wednesday and Wolochuk said he expects a prominent trip for Amadevil [117 pounds], but will leave it in the hands of the talented rider, who recently earned his second ESPY as Best Jockey.

“Hopefully, we can hit the board and get her graded-stakes placed for the value of the broodmare,” Wolochuk said. “We expect a good effort but at the end of the day as long as she comes back healthy, that's all we care about.”

Bred in Ohio by Imagine, Amadevil is out of the Pulpit mare Preachette.

The Honorable Miss is slated as Race 4 on Wednesday's 10-race card. First post is 1:05 p.m. Eastern.
