Vegas Magic Up Late To Beat Favored Procrastination In Del Mar’s Sorrento

The bay filly Vegas Magic stalked the pacesetting favorite Procrastination for the majority of the six-furlong Sorrento Stakes Saturday at Del Mar, then surged past her at the sixteenth pole and went on to a 1 1/4-length upset in the Grade 2 juvenile filly headliner.

The Kentucky-bred daughter of Good Magic ran the distance in 1:11.46 under Abel Cedillo and earned a first prize of $120,000 from the total purse of $200,500. The win – her third in three tries – pushed her bankroll to $205,200.

Doug O'Neill trains Vegas Magic for the three-way partnership of Omar Aldabbagh, Todd Cady, and Ty Leatherman.

Finishing second in the sprint was Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners' Procrastination, who had cut out all the fractions at :22.43, :45.43 and :58.29 as the race's 7-10 favorite. Finishing third in the six-horse field was Rick or Sharon Waller's Dazzlingdominika.

Vegas Magic returned $31.40, $6.60 and $4.20. Procrastination paid $2.80 and $2.40, while Dazzlingdominika returned $4.60 to show.

The track's Pick 6 Single Ticket Jackpot wager for the fourth day in a row wasn't solvable meaning there will be a carryover into the pool for Sunday of $237,758.

First post Sunday at the seaside oval is 2 p.m.

ABEL CEDILLO (Vegas Magic, winner) – “I got a perfect trip. Soon as I broke with her she took me there and when I got to the stretch, when she switched leads, she just kept going. In the last eighth I'm like: 'Oh, I'm going to get that.' I would love to see her at one mile next time; she'd be tough.”

LEANDRO MORA, assistant to trainer Doug O'Neill (Vegas Magic, winner)– “I expected the outside; this filly is so gutty. We were expecting her to give us a good race, she was my choice. Del Mar isn't the perfect place for some horses. It is like Saratoga: you might bring a nice horse to Saratoga and still might not win.”

FRACTIONS:  :22.43  :45.43  :58.29  1:11.46

The stakes win was the second of the meet for rider Cedillo and his first in the Sorrento. He now has 13 stakes wins at Del Mar.

The stakes win was the first of the meet for trainer O'Neill, but his third in the Sorrento. He now has 43 stakes wins at Del Mar.

The winning owners are Omar Aldabbagh of Las Vegas, NV, Todd Cady of San Diego, CA and Ty Leatherman of Simi Valley, CA.

Sharp-Trained Twilight Blue, Intrepid Heart Finish 1-2 In Inaugural Fort Larned

After matching strides throughout the stretch, 6-5 favorite Twilight Blue emerged as a narrow head winner over tracking stablemate Intrepid Heart in Saturday's inaugural running of the $200,000 Fort Larned for 3-year-olds and up at Churchill Downs.

Trained by Joe Sharp and ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr., Twilight Blue covered the 1 3/16 miles on a fast main track in 1:57.09.

After longshot Artemus Eagle led the field of five older horses through a first quarter mile in :24.11, Twilight Blue asserted himself to the front down the backstretch and a half-mile in :49.33 with Intrepid Heart in close pursuit. Passing the six-furlong marker in 1:13.77, Twilight Blue and Intrepid Heart engraved their prolonged drive midway around the far turn. The two battled shoulder to shoulder to the finish with a head bob deciding the victor.

“He was really gutsy today,” Hernandez said of Twilight Blue. “He took me to the front up the backside and really battled late. It was really cool to win a race named after Fort Larned (who Hernanadez rode to victory in the 2012 Breeders' Cup Classic [G1]) in the first edition.

The win was worth $122,760 and increased Twilight Blue's earnings to $444,594 with a record of 5-3-1 in 12 starts. Three of his wins have come at Churchill Downs.

“Both of these horses try so hard all the time and give it their all,” said Sharp, who trains the winner and the hard-luck runner-up. “It's great to win it with one of them but you're gutted at the same time for the other to run so well and lose. Both of these horses have been on the right and wrong sides of tight photos in the past. It's nice to run on this day at Churchill Downs. This is our home track and I'm glad we're able to be here to support it.”

Twilight Blue is a Kentucky-bred son of Air Force Blue out of the Rahy mare Lily the Pink and was bred by Knowles Bloodstock Inc. He is campaigned by Carl R. Moore Management LLC, which bought him from Lane's End for $45,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Twilight Blue returned $4.76. Intrepid Heart, with Tyler Gaffalione up  outfinished King Fury, who was 1 ¼ lengths back in third under Julien Leparoux.
