Reeves Hopes City Man Can Bookend Successful Saratoga Meet In Bernard Baruch

Owner Dean Reeves is looking to end the Saratoga Race Course meet the same way he started it: with a Grade 3 victory with multiple stakes-winner City Man. This time, the talented New York-bred son of Mucho Macho Man will contest the $200,000 Bernard Baruch Handicap for 3-year-olds and upward going 1 1/16 miles over the inner turf.

Trained by Christophe Clement, City Man captured the Grade 3 Forbidden Apple on July 15 at one mile. Racing in mid-pack early on, he was six wide in upper stretch and tipped out in the clear before making his winning move to take command from Get Smokin to win by 2 3/4 lengths. The win garnered a career-best 104 Beyer Speed Figure.

Under the Reeves Thoroughbred Racing moniker, Dean and his wife, Patti, have won five stakes this meet. In addition to the Forbidden Apple, their sophomore turf sprinter Big Invasion secured scores in the Grade 3 Quick Call presented by the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation and Mahony, while Isolate won the Tale of the Cat to give trainer Tom Amoss his 4,000th career victory. They also won the NYSSS Cab Calloway with the Danny Gargan-trained Dakota Gold.

The 5-year-old City Man captured the Danger's Hour on April 9 at Aqueduct in his 2022 debut before two unplaced efforts at stakes level at Belmont Park ahead of the Forbidden Apple. Initially slated to defend his title in the state-bred West Point presented by Trustco Bank on August 26, City Man scratched out of the 1 1/16-mile event when weather conditions forced the race onto the main track.

“Hope we can get by this one without some bad weather,” said Reeves, who owns City Man with Peter and Patty Searles. “We're hoping to finish the way we started. We might have run on the dirt had this race not been a week later, so it just made sense. So we figured, why not? We'll wait a week, come back and hope we get a good turf course. It's the same distance and we feel like we can be competitive in it.”

City Man, a dual surface stakes winner, won the 2019 Funny Cide on the Spa main track before winning the following year's Gio Ponti over the Aqueduct inner turf. Through a record of 22-6-4-3, City Man has amassed field-best earnings of $653,050. He was bred in the Empire State by Moonstar Farm.

“To start the meet with a Grade 3 and finish with a Grade 3 would be unbelievable,” Reeves said. “It really will make the trip home easy. So, fingers crossed, but I think we have a live shot. I would really like the end of the meet on the last day with a win like that.”

Joel Rosario, who won the 2019 Bernard Baruch aboard repeat winner Qurbaan, will return to the irons from post 5.

Trainer Tom Morley will be treading familiar waters when saddling Flying P Stable and James F. Schurman's stakes-winner Dynadrive.

Last year, Morley captured the Bernard Baruch with Tell Your Daddy, who is a half-brother to Dynadrive. By Temple City, Dynadrive enters from an upset coup in the restricted Lure on August 6 over the Mellon turf course at Saratoga, where he was second-to-last down the backstretch and made an inside rally to collar Sifting Sands to win by a head at 23-1 odds under return rider Eric Cancel.

Dynadrive lit up the Belmont tote board in his previous effort, winning a ten-furlong allowance optional claimer at 45-1 odds in his debut for Morley. Claimed by previous trainer Robertino Diodoro in November, Dynadrive won over a sloppy and sealed Saratoga main track last August. In July 2020, he won for a $40,000 tag over the Saratoga inner turf.

“We were lucky enough to have him moved into our shed row. He's one that has done very well since coming to us,” Morley said. “He really likes Saratoga. He's run three times here and won all three races. He was fantastically brave in the Lure and it looks like he's continued on the right trajectory since then. Eric Cancel has all the confidence in this horse.”

Dynadrive will leave from post 3.

Morley will also saddle New York-bred stakes winner Ocala Dream who, like City Man, also was originally pointing to the West Point. Owned by Thomas Albrecht, Vincent J. Fusaro and James Klein, the son of Effinex will be in search of his first win since the Kingston on May 30 at Belmont.

“There was nowhere else to run him in between [the West Point and Aqueduct],” Morley said. “It's a perfectly logical spot for the horse to have a crack at a graded stake at his best distance. If you take his form from the Kingston, he's a very legitimate horse in this race.”

Hall of Famer Javier Castellano, a two-time Bernard Baruch winner, will ride Ocala Dream from post 1.

Four-time Saratoga meet leading trainer Chad Brown will saddle graded stakes-placed Mouillage and Emaraaty.

Owned by Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables and e Five Racing Thoroughbreds, Mouillage last raced when a close second in the Grade 3 Canadian Turf on March 5 at Gulfstream Park. The effort was the 4-year-old son of Toronado's first effort away from his native France, where he registered four lifetime victories and has never finished off the board.

“He's off a layoff but he seems to be training well so we're happy to get him back on track,” Brown said. “We always liked him, and he ran really well at Gulfstream. Unfortunately, he exited the race with a minor injury, so we had to rest him but he's good now.”

Three-time meet leading rider Irad Ortiz, Jr. will ride Mouillage from post 2.

Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables and Michael J. Caruso's Emaraaty is a three-time winner of four starts at the Spa, with his only local defeat taking place when fourth in the 2019 Bernard Baruch. The 7-year-old son of Dubawi, out of Group 1 winner Zee Zee Top, enters off a victory in a one-mile allowance optional claimer on August 4 over the inner turf, where he defeated graded stakes placed runners Floriform and Atone.

“He seems to be a horse that has an affinity for Saratoga so it might be good to run him here again,” Brown said.

Emaraaty will be piloted by Flavien Prat from post 6.

Completing the field is Waterford Stable's Winters Back, who makes his first start in nearly 14 months for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher. The 5-year-old son of Summer Front was seventh in the Grade 1 United Nations at Monmouth Park last July after finishing second in the New Jersey oval's Grade 3 namesake race. He has won all three of his victories in wire-to-wire fashion.

Luis Saez has the call from post 4.

The Bernard Baruch is carded as Race 3 on Closing Day's 12-race program, which also features the Grade 1, $300,000 Hopeful for 2-year-olds going seven furlongs on the main track in Race 11. First post is 12:35 p.m. Eastern.

Slow Down Andy Tries Turf In Del Mar Derby

Trainer Doug O'Neill will bring two of his top 3-year-olds to the 78th running of the G2 Caesars Sportsbook Del Mar Derby on the TVG Pacific Classic undercard Saturday at Del Mar. The Derby will be the first time on the grass for Slow Down Andy, winner of last year's G2 Los Alamitos Futurity who finished second to Big City Lights in the $175,000 Real Good Deal Stakes at Del Mar last month.

“He's doing well,” O'Neill says. “It's in our own backyard, big purse so we thought we'd take a chance. He fits with them.”

Meanwhile, Mackinnon ran a disappointing fourth in the $100,000 Oceanside Stakes on opening day. The son of American Pharoah went off favored that day.

“I think the race under his belt will do him good,” O'Neill says, “and I think going a mile and an eighth will do him a world of good. That's the hope.”

The horse that won the Oceanside and defeated Mackinnon, Balnikhov, is also in the Derby.

“Balnikhov is training very well,” trainer Phil D'Amato says. “I think he'll be the favorite or second choice in there. He'll come running late.”

A horse that defeated Balnikhov earlier this year is running in the Derby. War At Sea has not run since he beat Balnikhov in the $100,000 Cinema at Santa Anita in June. The son of War Front is riding a three race win streak for trainer Ron Ellis.

“He stumbled pulling up after a workout before the La Jolla, which he was supposed to run in,” Ellis says. “It kind of scared us so we checked him out, sent him to a nuclear scan at Santa Anita. Everything checked out great. He's working great, training great so I think he's fit now.”

Cabo Spirit is coming into the Derby off his breakout win in the G3 La Jolla at Del Mar last month for trainer George Papaprodromou.

“He was an expensive 2-year old that we paid for so obviously he's a nice horse,” Papaprodromou says. “I always had high hopes for him and we still do.”

Here's the field from the rail with jockeys:

  1. Cabo Spirit (Joe Bravo)
  2. Slow Down Andy (Mario Gutierrez)
  3. War At Sea (Mike Smith)
  4. Spycatcher (Ryan Curatolo)
  5. Dandy Warhol (Flavien Prat)
  6. St Anthony (Hector Berrios)
  7. Mackinnon (Juan Hernandez)
  8. Barsabas (Diego Herrera)
  9. Balnikhov (Umberto Rispoli).

Hong Kong Harry Ready To Light Up Tote Board In Del Mar Mile

The first of the graded stakes on the TVG Pacific Classic undercard is the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile, going off as Race 7 of the 11-race card. 10 horses are set to go in the contest run on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course.

Hong Kong Harry will be out to avenge his loss in the G2 Eddie Read in July at Del Mar. 'Harry' was sideswiped and bumped hard a few steps out of the gate, leaving him some six lengths off the pace. He's used to being a lot closer and trainer Phil D'Amato says he never got into a position to win.

“Hopefully we get a clean break this time,” D'Amato says. “Last time he got wiped out at the start and it definitely cost us any chance of winning. If we can tactically get into a good spot out of the gate, I think he can run a winning race.”

Hong Kong Harry has run four times since arriving in the States from England in March. He's won three of those races, including the G3 American at Santa Anita in June.

D'Amato also will run Cathkin Peak, who ran third in the Eddie Read.

The D'Amato pair will have to deal with Irideo, an impressive winner of the $100,000 Wickerr Stakes on opening weekend at Del Mar, one of two stakes winners this summer from the Marcelo Polanco barn.

“I feel good,” Polanco says, “because he's coming to the race the same way he came to the other race. He's working good and eating like nothing happens.”

There are two horses in the Del Mar Mile who won on Pacific Classic Day last year. Tripoli won the TVG Pacific Classic, rallying past Tizamagician. He has not won since.

Astronaut has also gone winless since capturing the 2021 Del Mar Handicap. In fact, he has yet to race this year.

“He's coming off of a layoff,” trainer John Shirreffs points out. “Seems like a good spot to start him and get him going again. This race might not be quite long enough because a mile and 3/8's is more his style.”

Here's the field for the G2 Del Mar Mile from the rail with jockeys:

  1. Air Force Red (John Velazquez)
  2. Tarantino (Mike Smith)
  3. Irideo (Hector Berrios)
  4. None Above the Law (Joe Bravo)
  5. Hong Kong Harry (Flavien Prat)
  6. Goliad (Juan Hernandez)
  7. Cathkin Peak (Umberto Rispoli)
  8. Figureti (Abel Cedillo)
  9. Tripoli (Tiago Pereira)
  10. Astronaut (Victor Espinoza).

‘Class Filly’: Justify Daughter Just Cindy Ready For Top Effort In Spinaway

Clarkland Farm's Kentucky homebred Just Cindy will look to keep her perfect record intact in Sunday's Grade 1, $300,000 Spinaway, a seven-furlong sprint for juvenile fillies at Saratoga.

Trained by Eddie Kenneally, Just Cindy graduated on debut in June sprinting 5 1/2-furlongs at Churchill Downs ahead of a 2 1/4-length score last out in the six-furlong Grade 3 Schuylerville on July 14 at the Spa.

From the first crop of Triple Crown winner Justify and out of the stakes-winning Proud Citizen mare Jenda's Agenda, Just Cindy demonstrated class in her stakes debut by tracking the early speed from the inside post under Irad Ortiz, Jr. before angling out for the stretch run to reel in Summer Promise and secure the win.

“For a young horse that had only one prior race under her belt it was a big effort,” Kenneally said. “She was able to break sharp but relax in behind the leaders in the pocket and have enough ability when a seam opened up that she was able to get out and find running room. It was a professional run for an inexperienced filly.”

Just Cindy has breezed back five times at Kenneally's home base at Keeneland, including a half-mile in :48.40 on August 27.

“She could not be doing better,” Kenneally said. “She's had a good gap between races and seems fresh and ready to go. She's been breezing well. We're really happy with her. She's had a race over the track and no issues.”

The regally-bred Just Cindy's third dam is multiple graded stakes winner Just Jenda, who captured the 2010 Grade 2 Molly Pitcher going two turns at Monmouth Park. Kenneally said he expects Just Cindy will also improve with added ground with an eye towards the 1 1/16-mile Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies in November at Keeneland.

“You never know until you try but we would assume from everything she's shown us that seven furlongs would be better than six,” Kenneally said. “After this race, going to a mile and a sixteenth, we're hoping that would move her up further.”

Kenneally has enjoyed past success with young horses at Saratoga, taking the Grade 3 Sanford with Bitumen [2016] and By Your Side [2019] as well as a runner-up effort in the 2019 Grade 2 Saratoga Special with Scabbard.

“We were fortunate to win the Sanford twice and we had a horse named Scabbard run very well up there as well in the Saratoga Special,” Kenneally said. “At this time of year, that's where the good races are. It's where the prestigious races are for 2-year-olds.”

Kenneally said he's had high hopes for Just Cindy from Day One.

“She acted like a good horse from the first week she was in the barn,” Kenneally said. “She's very professional and takes everything in stride. She's a class filly and showed that all the way through. It was fairly clear that she was a quality filly when we first got to know her.”

Kenneally said a big effort Sunday will almost certainly signal a Breeders' Cup try for Just Cindy, who will exit post 5 under pick-up rider Luis Saez.

“Luis rides a lot for us and we're very happy to have him on board,” Kenneally said. “I would play it by ear but if she could get a Grade 1 under her belt on Sunday, we would be very comfortable to wait then for the Breeders' Cup.”
