ARC Malton Open Day Returns Sept. 12

Malton Open Day, sponsored by Arena Racing Company (ARC) and organized by Racing Welfare, returns Sunday, Sept. 12, and will be held in conjunction with the start of the inaugural National Racehorse Week, celebrating the racehorse and the staff who care for them. The event will feature 12 training yards in and around Malton, which will open their doors to the public, offering the opportunity to see behind the scenes at one of the most prominent and historic racing centers in the U.K. A slew of equine stars will be on show, along with a chance to speak to the trainers and the stable staff who provide their day-to-day care.

Tickets are on sale at www.maltonopenday.co.uk, with the opportunity for buyers to take advantage of early bird ticket prices before the end of July. Tickets are priced at £10 for adults and £6.50 for concessions (over 65's) including a program. Any tickets booked online after July 31 are £12.50 for adults and £8.50 for concessions. Visitors under 16 attend for free.

Yards will open from 8:45 a.m until 12 noon, with buses provided to transport attendees between the various yards. Among the horses in the spotlight this year are a number of Royal Ascot winners, including Richard Fahey trained Perfect Power, who won the G2 Norfolk S. this year, as well as John Quinn's Buckingham Palace S. winner Highfield Princess.

The event will be raising funds for organizers Racing Welfare, which provides a wide range of advice and support services for people working in or retired from racing, and offers a range of events, trips and activities both in the local community and virtually. A total of 1,019 individual beneficiaries from the Northern region received support from Racing Welfare last year.

4Racing Owners Club Makes a Donation to Racing Welfare

The 4Racing Owners Club presented a cheque to Racing Welfare for £5,000 on July 4, Racing Welfare announced on Thursday. The ownership group has the winning horse Snowy Burrows (Fr) (Montmartre {Fr}) with Rebecca Menzies, and the presentation was held at Menzies's Howe Hills yard after a tour. The money was raised through members' share payments, with any surplus funds after the horse's expenses for the year going directly towards 4Racing's charitable aims.

“Not only is Rebecca Menzies a great trainer but what a host she was for our 4Racing Owners Club open day to see Snowy Burrows and the team,” said 4Racing's Graham Arnold. “Our first year's charitable syndicate with Snowy not only gave our members the thrill of winning a race but has also raised £5,000 for Racing Welfare and £1,775 for Riders Minds. We are extremely proud of what the 4Racing Club is achieving and hope to be able to work with the charity moving forward.”

TB-Ed Initiative Launched by TBA

TB-Ed, a UK Thoroughbred Breeders' Association education and training initiative, was launched by the TBA on Wednesday.

The initiative, which offers a range of courses and resources that provide essential knowledge and guidance to new and existing industry participants, has also received financial support from the Racing Foundation, who co-funded the platform development and build with the TBA. Weatherbys is also a headline partner of the TB-Ed platform. Currently, the courses offered by TB-Ed include Understanding Pedigrees delivered by journalist and broadcaster Lydia Hislop, while there is also Nutrition of the Broodmare delivered by Catherine Rudenko, an independent nutritionist and consultant. New courses and content will be added periodically.

General website users can browse the pay-as-you-go catalogue and view a sample webinar for free, while you can also sign up to TB-Ed for free to receive access to a limited selection of free resources. Courses start at £50 and extra resources are priced accordingly. Alternatively, you can join as a TBA Associate for £60 per year which grants free access to all resources and discounts on courses. Finally, existing and new TBA members receive free access to all resources and discounted courses as part of their membership package. Caroline Turnbull, Education and Welfare Manager at the TBA, said, “TB-Ed will enable the TBA to provide up-to-date, relevant and expert knowledge to breeders who are committed to providing the highest standards of care for their horses. TB-Ed will also enable us to improve the accessibility and reach of training in the thoroughbred breeding industry, and will also be of interest to the wider equine community.”

Henry Cecil Open Weekend to Host Visitors in September

The Henry Cecil Open Weekend, slated for Sept. 18-19 this year, will welcome visitors back to Newmarket for the first time since 2019. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the event, which normally features racing and equine enthusiasts visiting training yards, into a virtual format for the first time. A total of £48,000 was raised for its three chosen beneficiaries-Racing Welfare (80%), the British Racing School (10%) and the Racing Centre (10%). This year, Racing Welfare, the newly formed Newmarket Pony Academy and a soon to be announced community project for all residents are the beneficiaries of the fundraiser.
