Highclere Stallion Parade to Support Racing Welfare

The Feb. 8 Highclere Stud Stallion Parade will now also support Racing Welfare. A donation equivalent to 5% of the nomination sales generated on the day of the parade will be donated to Racing Welfare, Highclere's Jake Warren announced.

“Racing Welfare provides crucial care for the wellbeing of people in the horseracing and thoroughbred breeding community, and we are privileged to support their efforts,” said Warren. “We are hugely looking forward to seeing breeders next week for what should be a very entertaining day.”

The stallion parade is now fully subscribed, and Highclere Stud requests that breeders who sent a reply card in the post after Feb. 1 to check with the stud office that it has been received. Competition entries to win a free nomination to Cable Bay (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) or Land Force (Ire) (No Nay Never) are still open, but close on Sunday, Feb. 6. Please visit the Highclere website for details.

Hon Supports Racing Welfare With £100,000 Donation

Racehorse owner Dr Johnny Hon, who operates Global Group Racing, has donated £100,000 to Racing Welfare to fund the Housing Support Officer role for the next three years. The Housing Support Officer helps the young tenants living at Racing Welfare's properties and working in racing to manage all aspects of their lives, setting them up for success.

Racing Welfare's Housing Support Officer Sarah Ashley said, “For some young people they don't have family support so I'm the only person they have to check they are doing okay. It allows people to become more confident and thrive in all aspects of their lives. I've taken the same journey myself through the racing school, working and riding in yards, it's not easy and I understand that. I can empathise, and they feel comfortable talking to me.  They are our next generation of racing staff.  If they are living well here, they will continue to do so.”

Hon said, “I am delighted to back this project for the next three years. As a passionate racing fan and owner of Albert House Stables, I know the importance of supporting all the great people who make racing happen. Young people come into racing with a love of horses and a desire to share in the excitement of winning races, but they have not always been well supported and they can be vulnerable in their personal lives. This project makes a real difference and sets an example that should be copied elsewhere in racing communities.”

Racing Staff Week Returns

Racing Staff Week kicks off with the launch of Ascot's Champions Day meeting Saturday. In its fifth year, Racing Staff Week, recognizing the contribution of the industry's workforce, including stud and stable staff, breeders, racecourse staff and administrators, is supported by Betfair through the efforts of Racing Welfare. Racing Welfare will have a presence on all courses that have meetings throughout the week, including 'The Big Racing Staff Week Quiz,' offering staff the opportunity to come together either in person or virtually Oct. 21. Hosted by racing presenters Niall Hannity and Vanessa Ryle, the quiz will give staff across the country to compete for a chance to win £1,000 in high street vouchers. Other events throughout the week include the presentation of four regional Lifetime in Racing awards, and the Betfair Clock Tower Cup at Doncaster, which gives 12 members of stable staff the opportunity to raise funds for Racing Welfare. Great Racing Welfare Cycle Challenge Raises £100K

Notable racing charity Racing Welfare received a financial boost during the past week as cyclists and runners earned in excess of £100,000 through donations for The Great Racing Welfare Cycle Challenge and in part from participants in the Vitality Big Half Marathon.

The GRWCC, a 500-mile journey by bike from Carlisle Racecourse to Newton Abbot Racecourse, was completed by 26 cyclists over five days, while four runners in London completed the Vitality Big Half Marathon. The team of cyclists hailed from all corners of the racing industry, and included trainers, stable staff, a clerk of the course, a racing presenter, former jockeys and even two of Racing Welfare's own staff members. Trainer Henry Daly and his wife Clarissa took part in the half-marathon, and showed their support for Racing Welfare after the charity had assisted traveling head person Helen Brisland following a life-changing accident on the gallops in 2018. Other runners included Annamarie Phelps, Lauren Hilton and Eamonn O'Donovan.

Chief Executive Dawn Goodfellow said, “It has been a phenomenal week for Racing Welfare on the fundraising front. After the impact of Covid over the past 18 months, it's fantastic to get back to live events, and these big challenges will help us deliver big impact for our beneficiaries. Thank you to everyone involved for your amazing efforts fundraising, training, cycling and running on our behalf.”
