Racing Welfare Partners With EPIC Risk Management

Racing Welfare has partnered with independent gambling harm minimisation consultancy, EPIC Risk Management. It is currently Safer Gambling week, a cross-industry initiative to promote safer gambling in the UK and Ireland. Epic Risk Management will be Racing Welfare's Safer Gambling Education Partner. The partnership will see EPIC's educational programme added to Racing Welfare's portfolio of support services.

Racing Welfare's Director of Welfare, Simone Sear, said, “Helping individuals struggling with addiction is a key part of the day-to-day work that we do here at Racing Welfare, as has been the case for many years. We know that gambling addiction often does not exist in isolation, and that it may be linked to other challenges such as substance abuse and mental ill-health.

“This partnership with EPIC signals our commitment to proactive and preventative action in the face of gambling addiction, as well as continuing to develop our support services to help those in the grip of an addiction.”

RaceTech’s Brian Paul Recognized at York

RaceTech's Brian Paul celebrated a career spanning almost 50 years as he was awarded Racing Welfare's Northern Lifetime in Racing Award at York Oct. 7.

The Lifetime in Racing Awards identify those individuals that have made an outstanding contribution to the racing industry throughout their careers.

“I had a great day at York celebrating my 50 years at RaceTech –it just doesn't seem like any time has passed! I'd like to thank British racing, York racecourse and RaceTech for giving me a lovely day, I'm very pleased, happy and chuffed.”

According to Kate Hills, who nominated Paul, “Brian is a highly respected leader and true team player. Always behind the scenes, Brian is one of the unsung heroes who always goes the extra mile in order to deliver at the highest level.”

Also recognised for her contribution to the sport was York Racecourse's Karen Dunbar, who joined the racecourse over 40 years ago.

“Karen is an amazing part of the team, a great ambassador,” said Dunbar's nominator, York racecourse's chief executive and clerk of the course William Derby. “She's got an amazing touch with customers. No problem is too small or too big to be dealt with.”

Dunbar will be celebrated at a later date, and also receive her award.

Racing Community Takes on 24-Hr Challenge to Benefit Racing Welfare

A total of 81 cyclists took part in a 24-hour challenge–embarking on 30km loops that kicked off at Cheltenham racecourse July 16–to benefit Racing Welfare, which supports the racing community. Originally tabbed with a £60,000, the total amount raised by the event is set to top £100,000. In addition to the efforts of the cyclists, funding is also boosted by event sponsors Unibet, Racehorse Lotto, The Jockey Club and Tattersalls. Well beyond the £60,000 target, that figure will have a huge impact, and could cover the cost of employing a welfare team in one of the charity's four regions for a whole year, providing direct on-the-ground support to racing's people.

Alice Campbell, representing Team Racing Welfare, said, “I've worked in National Hunt racing for nearly 20 years and am currently working for Nigel Twiston-Davies. I entered the cycle challenge because Racing Welfare helped me get back to full fitness after breaking my leg and rupturing my PCL ligament and wanted to give something back.”

Participants hailed from all across the racing industry, and included Sir AP McCoy, trainers Ben Pauling and Harry Fry with two teams each, Magnolia Cup winner Khadija Mellah, Assistant trainer to Dan Skelton Tom Messenger, and Team Sky Sports consisting of Vanessa Ryle, Rosie Tapner, Sean Boyce and Oisin Murphy.

Collectively the cyclists amassed a total of 644 laps and a staggering 12,313km. The most laps (57) were recorded by The Menorahs–consisting of Rhys Flint, Harry Skelton, Tom Danter and Richard Johnson.
