Racing Welfare App Launched

A new app making it easier for people in the UK racing industry to access 24/7 support was launched by Racing Welfare on Tuesday. The Racing Welfare app offers a range of information, advice and guidance including:

  • Mental health
  • Physical health
  • Careers Advice and Training Services (CATS)
  • Money matters
  • Retirement
  • Housing

It is available for download at Google Play and The App Store.

Racing Welfare's Regional Welfare Manager, Brian Watson said, “It's a super resource for anyone who might need to access our services–all the information you can get from our welfare teams can be found on the app. I particularly think that the discrete route into our services that the app offers is going to be of huge value to racing staff, as well as the ability to connect with a counsellor at the touch of a button, whether at work, travelling to the races or at home.”

Tweenhills Takeaway Vans at Tattersalls Raise £8,500 For Racing Welfare

Tweenhills and Qatar Racing once again hosted the Tweenhills Angus Burger and Tweenhills Coffee vans at the Tattersalls December Foal and Mare Sales to raise money for Racing Welfare. The vans raised £8,500, which was donated to the charity.

“We are delighted to be able to support Racing Welfare in these incredibly challenging times and wish to thank everyone for their custom,” David Redvers, owner and managing director of Tweenhills, said. “Tweenhills Angus Beef is produced from the grass-fed herd of cattle reared at Tweenhills alongside the stallions, mares and foals, and is expertly prepared by our local butcher.”

Selling a wide range of burgers, breakfast rolls and barista-style coffees, the vans have now raised over £23,000 for Racing Welfare over the past three years.

“Thank you so much to Tweenhills for their continued support in once again raising vital funds for Racing Welfare,” Dawn Goodfellow, chief executive at Racing Welfare, said. “As a charity, we rely upon the generosity of our supporters so that we can be there for racing's people when they need us, and the impact of this donation will be far-reaching during what is a particularly tough time for many.”

Nicola Paramo Wins CATS Personal Development Award

Nicola Paramo, a freelance racing and bloodstock sales photographer, has been awarded the CATS Personal Development Award at Newmarket Racecourse. Sponsored by Hartpury University, the award is in its second year and recognises the person who has put the most dedication and effort into developing their career in racing after using Racing Welfare's Careers Advice and Training Service (CATS).

Paramo utilised CATS for some career coaching to set up her freelance business offering sales photos and videos to the industry, as well as social media management. After the coaching, she then accessed a CATS grant to help her invest in the specialist equipment required. As a result, her business has been expanding and she has provided photography for a number of trainers including Sir Mark Prescott, whose social media accounts she now manages. This year, Paramo has also provided her first sales imagery and videos, and will be working with more industry stakeholders.

Catherine Porter, Head of Hartpury University's Equine Department, selected the winner and said, “It was hard to choose a winner from three really strong finalists, but I chose Nicola Paramo as it was a clever initiative and she utilised CATS well to support her venture–as noted in her nomination, it is niche and she looks to be carving out a good business for herself.”
