Nick Bannister Will Be Next Racing Welfare Chairman

Nick Bannister will become the next chairman of Racing Welfare on June 12, the organisation announced on Wednesday. Currently chairman of Haydock Park Racecourse since 2020, Bannister will succeed William Barlow, who will be completing his five-year term.

Bannister, who first worked for three decades in financial services, also manages the family-owned Coniston Hotel & Spa and its associated estate in the Yorkshire Dales. He has served as chair of The Countryside Alliance Foundation for six years and spent over 10 years as the deputy governor of the Hunt Staff Benefit Society.

At one point an amateur jump jockey, Bannister said, “I am very much looking forward to immersing myself in this position and helping Racing Welfare evolve, navigate the challenges ahead and continue the excellent work they do for a cause so close to my heart.”

Dawn Goodfellow, chief executive at Racing Welfare said, “Nick's vast background of working in finance will undoubtedly be hugely beneficial. Added to that is his experience of political matters with the Countryside Alliance, which can hopefully serve to further strengthen our relationships with key industry stakeholders.”

Racing Welfare Wins Silver At Smiley Charity Film Awards

Charity Racing Welfare has won a silver award at the Smiley Film Awards on Mar. 20. The honour was given for the racing charity's 2023 Mental Health Awareness Week film, which depicts anxiety building up for a racehorse trainer. It was created in conjunction with Equine Productions and shows regular day-to-day scenarios that can adversely affect mental health in racing's participants.

Held at Leicester Square's ODEON Luxe cinema, the awards celebrated several categories, with the finalists decided by public vote. Then the judging panel selected the winners.

Racing Welfare's head of communications and marketing, Nicki Strong, said, “It was a huge honour for our film to be recognised by an expert panel comprising high-profile and influential people from the worlds of fundraising, business, entertainment and media. We are extremely proud of the film and the role it played in spearheading our mental health campaign, and that it resonated with both those within and outside of the racing community. We'd like to say a huge thank you to Equine Productions for expertly bringing our vision to life, our actor Charlie Smith for giving his time and to Warren Greatrex and his team for allowing us to film at Rhonehurst.”

Racing Welfare’s Annual ARC Malton Open Day Set for Sunday

Racing Welfare's annual ARC Malton Open Day is set to take place this Sunday, Sept. 10, and again this year racing fans will have the opportunity to follow their favourite horses from their stables to York Racecourse.

Eleven trainers have opened their doors to the public, of which several–Tim Easterby, Richard Fahey, Roger Fell, Sean Murray, Adrian Keatley and Nigel Tinkler–have horses running at York Sunday for a total of 23 runners on the day.

This year, participants in the event will also meet and chat with jockey Sean Kirrane, who was aboard Live In The Dream (Ire) (The Prince Of Lir {Ire}) for the win in this year's G1 Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe S., at Tim Easterby's Habton Grange Stables.

Shaquille Will Be One Of The Highlights Of The ARC Malton Open Day

The annual ARC Malton Open Day, featuring trainer Julie Camacho's dual Group 1-winning sprinter Shaquille (GB) (Charm Spirit {Ire}), has been set for Sept. 10.

Part of the National Racehorse Week initiative, the Malton Open Day–organised by racing charity Racing Welfare–sees 11 trainers, including Camacho, open their yards to the public. In addition, a new partnership with York Racecourse for 2023 lets visitors continue their family day out at the racecourse's YorkMix Family Sunday Raceday. There will be regular appearances by popular children's character, Bluey, throughout the day, as well as free bouncy castles and free face painting for children. Proceeds of ticket sales will go towards Racing Welfare's wide-ranging support services for everyone working in the industry. Combined tickets for both the ARC Malton Open Day and the YorkMix Family Sunday Raceday are available to purchase at the early bird price of £15 with all under 18s free. Entry to the Malton Open Day only costs £7.50. Prices will increase to £17.50 and £10, respectively, beginning on Sept. 1.
