Baffert and Lanni Go Big for ‘Quality’ Filly

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert and agent Donato Lanni, acting on behalf of an undisclosed client, added a big-ticket item to his future roster when stretching to $1.8 million to land a Quality Road half-sister to GI Spinaway S. heroine Sweet Loretta (Tapit) late in the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga session Tuesday. The May 4 foal was consigned by Lane's End as hip 213 and bred by Mt Brilliant Farm & Ranch and W. S. Farish. Her dam was a $2.2-million KEENOV '16 purchase (in foal to Constitution) by Greg Goodman's Mt Brilliant.

Quality Road Firster Runs to the Money in ‘Rising Star’ Fashion

Jace's Road (c, 2, Quality Road–Out Post, by Silver Deputy), a $510,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase, put on a show at Ellis Park Saturday afternoon en route to 'TDN Rising Star' honors.

The bay worked four furlongs in :48 2/5 (2/90) at Brad Cox's Churchill Downs base July 29 and was hammered down to 7-5 favoritism while drawn on the outside in post nine against this deep-looking bunch.

He chased on the outside in third though an opening quarter in :22.47, loomed boldly under confident handling while three-wide on the turn for home and took off impressively down the stretch while under wraps to win going away by 6 1/4 lengths. Second-time starter Retained (Bayern) was second.

This is the 13th 'Rising Star' for Quality Road.

The multiple stakes-placed Out Post, from the same female family as champion Silverbulletday (Silver Deputy) and GISW Forest Secrets (Forest Wildcat), brought $250,000 from breeder Richard Santulli as a KEESEP yearling. After producing a filly by Curlin this year, the winner's dam was bred back to Quality Road.

Jace's Road is bred on a similar cross (Quality Road x Deputy Minister) as champion Abel Tasman and GISW Spring Quality.

Winning co-owner West Point Thoroughbreds was also represented by promising debut winner and $500,000 FTSAUG graduate Battle of Normandy (City of Light) in the opener on Saratoga's Whitney card.

August 6 Insights: Justify Half-Brother to Commissioner Debuts

Hronis Racing LLC, West Point Thoroughbreds, and Woodford Racing LLC have partnered up to unveil the latest blue-blooded colt by Justify, this one named HAWKER. Shelling out a cool $675,000 for him at KEESEP, his pedigree warrants the implied expectations: out of GSP Flaming Heart (Touch Gold), it makes Hawker a half to GISP & MGSW Commissioner (A.P. Indy), GISP & GSW Laugh Track (Distorted Humor), and to the dam of MGISW Vino Rosso (Curlin). All three of the colt's closest female line dams have black-type victories to their name as well as being producers of black-type earners. John Sadler sends him to post here. To Hawker's inside, and only slightly less expensive, is the Bob Baffert-trained Carmel Road (Quality Road). Out of a stakes-winner of over $435,000 in lifetime earnings, the colt is a half to stakes-placed Night Time Lady (Midnight Lute). The second dam, a full-sister to GIII Jaipur H. winner Multiple Choice (Mt. Livermore), produced GSP Silver City (Unbridled's Song) and Elope (Gone West). Continuing the parade of glamorous juvenile debuts at the Spa, Godolphin will send out homebred WADSWORTH (Quality Road), the first colt to the races for GI Coolmore Jenny Wiley S. victress Dickinson (Medaglia d'Oro). Second dam Little Belle (A.P. Indy) won the GI Ashland S. before going on to a runner-up performance in the GI Kentucky Oaks and Coaching Club American Oaks. That one is the full-sister to the granddam of Munnyfor Ro (Munnings), Canadian champion 3-year-old filly of 2021. The partnership of Repole Stable and St Elias Stable will send out a one-two punch in coupled entries Crupi (Curlin) and Point Proven (Gun Runner) for Todd Pletcher. The latter was a $675,000 KEESEP buy, and the half-brother to GIII Beaumont S. winner Twenty Carat (Into Mischief) hails from the female family of Breeders' Cup winning mother-daughter duo Shared Account (Pleasantly Perfect) and 'TDN Rising Star' Sharing (Speightstown) through the second dam. Calumet Farm unveils TRACK MATE (Union Rags) over the long grass contest here, the son of MGISP Teammate (A.P. Indy) going to post for D Wayne Lukas. The dam is a half to top sire War Front (Danzig) as well as two-time GIII Jaipur S. winner Ecclesiastic (Pulpit); MGSP Riviera Cocktail (Giant's Causeway); GSW North Dakota (Medaglia d'Oro); and GSP Jay Gatsby (Giant's Causeway). Track Mate has sibling shadows to outrun as the half to SW Team of Teams (Elusive Quality), MGSP Team Colors (Street Cry {Ire}), and SP Seven Away (Oxbow). Three well-regarded colts will line up next to each other in the gate here, led by SUNDANCE (Quality Road), an $800,000 KEESEP procurement for WinStar, Siena Farm, and Gainesway Stable. Out of 'TDN Rising Star' Cherry Lodge (Bernardini), half-sister to GISW Stormello (Stormy Atlantic) and his full-brother GSW My Best Brother, the dam's full-sibling Gala Award annexed the GIII Palm Beach S. while half-sister Atlantic Voyage (Stormy Atlantic) produced Canadian champion 2 & 3-year-old filly Curlin's Voyage (Curlin). Sundance will be his dam's first to make it to the races and is in Rodolphe Brisset's tutelage. Quality Road's other pricey juvenile in here is Brad Cox's Jace's Road, a $510,000 KEESEP buy for the West Point and Albaugh Family Stables partnership. Splitting those two is another debuting Godolphin homebred in Face Value (Medaglia d'Oro). City of Light Off The Blocks With First Winner

Three Diamonds Farm and Joseph Besecker's Roja Ligera (City of Light) stepped forward at second asking to take an off-the-turf Ellis Park dash Sunday and become the first winner for her freshman sire (by Quality Road). She had trailed all but one rival home following a poor break in a five-furlong event at Churchill Downs July 1, but the $75,000 OBSMAR purchase (:9 4/5) got away much sharper this time out, moving between horses to contend for the lead before giving way to Catcha Later Mo (Mo Town). Roja Ligera began to re-engage that rival around the far turn, drawing even with her l at the quarter pole before drawing off from the three path. Collected Glory (Collected) gave chase along the rail from second and was gaining slowly, but ran out of time as Roja Ligera went on to win by 1 1/4 lengths.

Also City of Light's first-born foal, Roja Ligera is out of a half-sister to GSW Wishful Tomcat (Tactical Cat) and to the dam of MGSW Rated R Superstar (Kodiak Kowboy). The winner has a yearling half-sister by Mastery.

City of Light, winner of both the GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at four and the GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational S. at five, stood alongside his sire at Lane's End this year for $60,000 after seeing frenzied bidding for his first crop of yearlings last term. A City of Light colt topped Keeneland September at $1.7 million and 15 of his yearlings fetched $500,000 or more in 2021.
