Quality Road’s Silver Peak Makes Turf Debut A Winning One

6th-Tampa Bay Downs, $24,000, Msw, 2-19, 3yo, 1mT, 1:36.33, fm, 1 1/4 lengths.
SILVER PEAK (c, 3, Quality Road–Dreamologist {GSW, $203,710}, by Tapit) debuted over the synthetic track at Woodbine Nov. 13 and got up to be second when traveling 6 1/2 furlongs. Given the stretch out and the change of surface Sunday, the gray jumped from the blocks as the narrow 7-5 second choice and dove to the front to lead narrowly into the first turn. Showing the way through opening fractions of :23.63 and :48.85, Silver Peak held his position up the backstretch as Life At Sea (West Coast) stayed a length off of him in second. The top pair stayed one-two as they swung past the quarter pole with Silver Peak maintaining his advantage down the stretch, keeping Life At Sea at bay to win by 1 1/4 lengths. Out of GIII Las Cienegas S. winner Dreamologist-herself a daughter of champion 2-year-old filly Dreaming of Anna (Rahy) and half-sister to GISP & sire Fast Anna (Medaglia d'Oro)-Silver Peak's third dam is a half-sister to champion grass horse and leading sire Kitten's Joy (El Prado {Ire}). Silver Peak has a yearling half-brother by Curlin while Dreamologist visited leading general sire Into Mischief for a 2023 foal. Lifetime Record: 2-1-1-0, $25,166. Sponsored by Alex Nichols Agency

4th-GP, $84K, Msw, 4yo/up, 6f, 1:38 p.m.

Though making a belated debut as a 4-year-old, LAKOTA TERRITORY (Quality Road), bred in a partnership by Whisper Hill Farm, Three Chimneys, and JSM Equine, gets his chance to add to his family's legacy Friday out of the Todd Pletcher barn. Out of the Malibu Moon mare Akron Moon, the bay is a full-brother to MGISW Bellafina who brought a final bid of $4,000,000 from Coolmore's M V Magnier in foal to Tiz the Law at last fall's Fasig-Tipton Night of the Stars sale. Bellafina's first foal, a weanling filly by Uncle Mo, sold to Paramount Bloodstock for $1.35 million at the same sale. Also under Akron Moon is another full-sibling to Lakota Territory in MSW and MGSP Diamond King. She'll be represented this year by a 2-year-old Curlin colt who sold for $400,000 to Repole Stable & St. Elias Stables at the 2022 Keeneland September Sale. Recently crowned Eclipse winner Irad Ortiz, Jr. picks up the mount for owner JSM Equine LLC.

Another making a late start is A La Carte (Uncle Mo), a 5-year-old out of Canadian champion 3-year-old filly Leigh Court (Grand Slam). The Speedway Stables homebred recently turned in a bullet work for trainer Bill Mott, going five furlongs in 1:01 3/5 (1/5) Jan. 15. TJCIS PPS

Quality Road’s First Defender Earns ‘Rising Star’ Nod On Debut

Gunned to the front from a middle gate by jockey Tyler Gaffalione, First Defender (3, c, Quality Road–Love And Pride, by A.P. Indy) withstood pressure on all sides and a contested early pace at the Fair Grounds to become the newest 'TDN Rising Star'.

Off sharply, the colt found himself sandwiched between horses from the opening strides with Pinfire (Bolt d'Oro) to his inside and Golden Nugget (Mendelssohn) off his outer flank. The trio quickly separated themselves from the rest of the field as they sped through an opening quarter in :21.48. Still bunched together as they rounded the far turn, the race became a question of who could withstand the pressure. First Defender answered to the affirmative, striding away past the furlong marker and opening up close to home for the 5 1/4-length win as the 4-5 favorite. 21-1 shot Quaternion closed to be a clear second.

Out of a dual Grade I-winning dam in Love and Pride, herself a $4.9 million purchase by Three Chimneys out of the 2013 FTKNOV sale, First Defender is already a half-brother to a pair of stakes winners in Bella Runner (Gun Runner) and Princesinha Julia (Pioneerof the Nile). Third dam Cara Rafaela (Quiet American) is responsible for the late MGISW and leading sire Bernardini (A.P. Indy). First Defender is the 14th 'TDN Rising Star' for Quality Road. Love and Pride produced a filly by Volatile last year and was not bred for 2023.
