Qaader Targeting July Festival

Sheikh Hamdan’s ‘TDN Rising Star’ Qaader (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), last seen finishing second in the G2 Coventry S. at Royal Ascot, could reappear in the G2 Superlative S. over seven furlongs on July 11 at Newmarket or the G2 July S. over a furlong shorter over the same course 48 hours earlier.

Assistant trainer Charlie Johnston said, “The July Festival is where you are likely to see Qaader next, although we are flexible as to which race we will run him in. We could go up to seven for the Superlative or stay at six for the July S.

“He was still quite green in the race at Ascot, and didn’t get beat through a lack of speed but through a lack of experience. We would have no problem taking on the Coventry winner [Nando Parrado] again at some point, because Qaader moved through the race like a very good horse.”

The stable’s Eye Of Heaven (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) was more of a disappointment at Royal Ascot, beating just three home as the favourite in the G2 Norfolk S., but Johnston is not discouraged by the colt’s future prospects as he prepares for the G3 Molecomb S. on July 29.

“Eye Of Heaven will go straight to the Molecomb,” he said. “The only other race for him over five furlongs would have been the Dragon S. at Sandown on Sunday, but that comes a bit too soon for him off the back of Ascot.

“I would just put a line through his run [in the Norfolk]. His run at Newmarket [on debut] is bomb proof, as is his home work. The ground at Ascot was one factor, along with a few other little things. I hope we will see the real Eye Of Heaven at Goodwood.”

Night of Thunder’s Qaader Gets Rising Star Tag at Newbury

Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s Qaader (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}), a €44,000 Goffs February purchase turned 110,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling, had his supporters as the 10-3 joint-favourite for Friday evening’s MansionBet Proud To Support British Racing EBF Novice S. at Newbury. The March-foaled bay was prominent throughout the six-furlong test and gave little cause for concern, powering clear of overmatched rivals to earn ‘TDN Rising Star’ status in style. Qaader was quickly into stride to race in a leading wave of three spread across the track through halfway. Last off the bridle inside the two pole, he quickened to seize control approaching the final eighth and was not for catching thereafter, despite drifting left towards the far-side rail in the closing stages, hitting the line an impressive four lengths clear of Running Back (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}).

“We didn’t go particularly quick and it took a while for the penny to drop, but he picked up really well and gave me the feel of a really nice horse,” said winning rider Jim Crowley. “He will get further, but he could also have sharpened up for that as well so I don’t know about targets. Maybe it could be the [June 20 G2] Coventry, but we’ll wait and see what connections want to do. He won nicely and there are sure to be plenty of options for him.”

Qaader, half-brother to a yearling filly by Footstepsinthesand (GB), becomes the first winner from three runners for Redinha (GB) (Dansili {GB}), herself kin to the dual stakes-placed So Smart (Ger) (Selkirk). His second dam So Squally (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) is an unraced full-sister to GI Breeders’ Cup Turf, G1 Coronation Cup and G1 Deutsches Derby hero Shirocco (Ger), MGSW G2 Gerling-Preis victor Subiaco (Ger) and the stakes-winning G1 Deutschland-Preis runner-up Storm Trooper (Ger). So Squally is kin to five black-type winners all told and she is also a full-sister to the dam of three-time stakes winner Swacadelic (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) and last term’s G3 Anglesey S. hero Roman Turbo (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}).
