Wyoming Downs To Offer Record Purses For 2021 Meet

With purses at an historic high of $1.1 million, Wyoming Downs, the only private racetrack in Wyoming, will host its 18-day live racing season every Saturday and Sunday beginning Saturday, June 12, and running through Aug. 8.

Horsemen from approximately six states competing for the winnings. The $1.1 million is the highest ever purse in the track's history.

Owner Eric Nelson said: “We are excited to offer the highest purses in our history and look forward to another great season with big crowds and great times.”

Wyoming Downs will once again be welcoming live crowds. During the 2020 pandemic Wyoming Downs was one of the few tracks in the United States to continue live racing with fans and did so by complying with state and local health mandated guidelines. This year masks will be recommended, though not required, sneeze guards will remain in place and cleanliness and sanitation will remain the focus.

Gates open at 11:30 AM with the first post at 1:05 PM. General admission is $10.00 with children under 12 free in the general admission stands. Clockers corner seats are $20.00 per person.

Each race day features 10 races.

Wyoming Downs will host special events throughout the season. Among the popular events are the Sixth Annual Brew Fest, Native American Heritage Day, Special Olympics-Wyoming Day and Pink Out Day which celebrates cancer survivors with the annual “Raysha's Race.”

2021 marks the ninth consecutive race season since owner Eric Nelson repurchased Wyoming Downs and began racing in 2013. Live racing has marked a resurgence of area industries related to racing.

Finger Lakes Announces Second Purse Increase Of 2021

Officials at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack (FLGR) announced Thursday the second purse increase of the year, which increases the average daily purses by over 26 percent than 2020 levels.

A 10 percent increase on top of the 15 percent increase announced last month has allowed average daily purses to increase by over $30,000 a day versus the 2020 season. The increases are possible due to FLGR vastly outperforming projections for its gaming operations since coming out of a nearly six-month closure due to the pandemic in 2020. In addition, FLGR was recently allowed by the state to resume a 20-hour business day after several months of reduced operating hours.

“This second increase in 2021 is another positive development for horsemen and women at Finger Lakes as they work to recover from a difficult 2020. This will also be an additional incentive for others to come participate in racing at Finger Lakes,” said FLGR general manager Chris Riegle.

Finger Lakes Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association (FLHBPA) president Chris Vaccaro added: “This is more good news for our membership, and New York racing in general. These increases strengthen racing at Finger Lakes by increasing both participation and investment within the industry itself.”

Finger Lakes' 2021 meet runs through Wednesday, November 24. Racing is scheduled every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon until the week after Labor Day. Thursday is then added to the schedule until the conclusion of the meet.

Finger Lakes Boosts Purses 15 Percent, Reinstitutes Full Stakes Schedule For 2021 Season

Thoroughbred racing returns Monday afternoon to Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack (FLGR), with a first race post time of 1:10 pm.

Officials recently announced a 15 percent increase in overnight purses for the 2021 meet and the reinstituting of a full stakes schedule. The increase comes after gaming operations were permitted by New York State to resume a 20-hour business day after several months of reduced operating hours. The gaming facility at Finger Lakes, closed for nearly six months last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, reopened in September, but operated with reduced hours of operation from November through early April.

Average daily purses are projected to increase approximately $18,000 per day as a result.

“As our business continues returning to normal, we are pleased to put this purse increase in place to benefit our horsemen and women who have struggled like so many during this past year, while sustaining our racing program post-pandemic,” said FLGR general manager Chris Riegle.

Finger Lakes Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association (FLHBPA) president Chris Vaccaro added: “Coming off of a year with so much uncertainty and difficulty, this increase signals the start of a positive road forward for our membership as we work together to strengthen racing at Finger Lakes now and for the future.”

The 101-day season schedule will begin with no fans in attendance, just as the entire shortened 2020 season took place. A recent announcement by the state that fans will be able to return to racetracks in limited capacity numbers could spell changes to that policy in the near future, however.

“We look forward to reviewing specific guidance from the state on reopening protocols with fans in attendance so that we can soon welcome back many of our loyal patrons who enjoy a day at the races,” added Riegle.

While fans await to return to the races, they may view all of the action streaming online in several ways, including the FLGR YouTube channel, as well as fingerlakesbonusbets.com where they can wager as well.

After opening today, Finger Lakes will resume racing on Monday, May 3 with three-day race weeks that run Monday through Wednesday until the week after Labor Day. Thursday will be added to the weekly schedule at that point until the conclusion of the meet on Wednesday, Nov. 24. First race post time will be 1:10 p.m. daily through Nov/ 4. To accommodate the end of daylight saving time, post time will move to 12:15pm as of Nov. 8.

The 2021 stakes schedule features 13 events headlined by the 50th running of the $150,000 New York Derby for top New York-bred 3-year-olds on July 19 and The New York Breeders' Futurity on Oct. 18 for New York-bred 2-year-olds with an estimated offering of $200,000. Precursors to the Futurity include the Lady Finger and Aspirant Stakes on Sept. 27, both with estimated purses of $100,000. The stakes season begins with the $50,000 George W. Barker Stakes on June 21.

Pair Of Stakes Races Added To Ellis Park’s 2021 Racing Season

Ellis Park is back on track to offer record purses while adding two new stakes for the 2021 racing season. The meet runs Sunday June 27 through Saturday Sept. 4.

Racing secretary Dan Bork said maiden races likely will top the record $50,000 achieved in 2019 before the pandemic forced cutbacks last year in the wake of a three-month shutdown. Average daily purses should top $350,000, which would be the highest in Ellis Park's 99-year history. Those numbers include Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund supplements, for which the vast majority of horses are eligible.

The condition book, which details the races for which entries will be taken on a given day, will be finalized in May after the Kentucky Derby, Bork said. Meanwhile, a 14-race stakes schedule was announced today, highlighted by the highly successful Kentucky Downs Preview Day now becoming Preview Weekend on Aug. 7-8 with the two new races. Six stakes received $25,000 purse increases over last year.

The Preview races — all on grass and designed as stepping stones to Kentucky Downs' lucrative stakes in early September— now total seven with the addition of the $100,000 Kentucky Downs Preview Dueling Grounds Oaks for 3-year-old fillies at a mile and a sixteenth and the $100,000 Kentucky Downs Preview Dueling Grounds Derby for 3-year-olds at a mile and an eighth.

All the Kentucky Downs Preview stakes carry a purse of $100,000 with the exception of the $125,000 Preview Turf Cup, a 1 1/4-mile prelude to Kentucky Downs' $1 million, Grade 2 Calumet Turf Cup at 1 1/2 miles.

“We should have very quality racing,” said trainer Larry Jones, the Hopkinsville native and long-time Henderson resident who has spent most of the summers of his training career at Ellis Park. “With the extra stakes and the money the way it is, it's going to bring in a lot better outfits – horses that maybe would have gone to Saratoga will stay and race at Ellis. I'm looking forward to it. It reminds you of days gone by.”

The Preview Dueling Grounds Derby and Oaks are set for Saturday Aug. 7, along with the Preview Turf Sprint. The remaining four stakes are scheduled for Sunday Aug. 8: the Preview Turf Cup, Preview Ladies Sprint, Preview Ladies Turf and Preview Mint Million Mile.

The winner of each of the Preview Weekend stakes receives an automatic spot with the entry fees waived in the corresponding stakes at Kentucky Downs.

Five dirt stakes take center stage a week later on Aug. 15, headlined by the $200,000 Ellis Park Derby. Last year's running of the 1 1/8-mile race was captured by Keeneland's Grade 2 Toyota Blue Grass winner Art Collector. Also that day again will be the Groupie Doll for fillies and mares, the Ellis Park Juvenile and Ellis Park Debutante — each increased to $125,000 from 2020 — along with the $100,000 Audubon Oaks at seven-eighths of a mile.

The Eddie Kenneally-trained Lady Kate won last year's Groupie Doll and then finished second to two-time champion Monomoy Girl in Churchill Downs' Grade 1 La Troienne. Sconsin, who is trained by Greg Foley, went from a third-place finish in last year's Audubon Oaks to victory in Churchill Downs' Grade 2 Eight Belles and a fourth-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.

The purse for every stakes includes $25,000 in KTDF supplements for registered Kentucky-breds.

“We've been delighted with how horseplayers and fans have responded to our stakes being super-sized into festival-type days,” said Jeff Hall, Ellis Park's director of racing operations. “Now we're going from two to three days that will provide some of the best racing programs outside of Saratoga and Del Mar. And I dare say on the two stakes-packed Sundays that we could be right up there with both coasts.

“Since creating Kentucky Downs Preview Day in 2018, the program has just blossomed and succeeded in its mission of providing launching pads to Kentucky Downs. We're thrilled to add two more stakes, filling a void in the 3-year-old grass divisions and expanding the series to a weekend.”

The stakes schedule kicks off July 4 with the $75,000 Ellis Park Turf for fillies and mares and the $75,000 Good Lord for older sprinters on July 17.

Boosting Ellis Park's purses is the unique relationship the track has with Kentucky Downs, which through an arrangement with the Kentucky Horsemen's Benevolent & Protective Association will transfer $4.2 million into Ellis' purse account this year. That money will be split equally between unrestricted association purses and KTDF funds, for which the transfer requires approval of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission and its KTDF advisory committee.

“The three-way deal among Kentucky Downs, Ellis Park and the Kentucky HBPA has proven a win-win-win for all parties and the state and really helps strengthen the entire circuit,” said Marty Maline, executive director of the Kentucky HBPA. “Kentucky Downs Preview Weekend is so fitting because it also casts the limelight on Kentucky Downs several weeks before they open. Ellis adding two 3-year-old turf stakes will keep those horses in Kentucky throughout the summer and heading into Kentucky Downs.

“Kentucky tracks were hit hard last year with COVID restrictions and the three-month shutdown. It's so great to see things coming back to some sort of normalcy. The Ellis meet should be sensational — the barn area full and crowds as large as the governor permits. There will be no better place in the Tri-State area to break out of cabin fever than at Ellis Park.”
