Tampa Announces Third Purse Increase

Tampa Bay Downs announced its third purse increase this season, which will go into effect with Saturday's card. Ongoing gains in simulcast revenue have led to another 10% boost, with an additional $2,500 for all allowance races and maiden special weights and $1,250 claiming and starter races. The increase amounts to approximately $15,000 more per day in total purse money. Tampa Bay Downs previously increased purses by 10% Dec. 16 and again on Feb. 3.

Officials further postponed the track's annual Turf Sprint Showcase Day from Sunday to next Wednesday, Feb. 24. Both races had been pushed back from Saturday to Sunday earlier because of the soaked condition of the turf course, which last saw action Friday.

With more rain forecast later this week, the decision was made to give the turf course plenty of time to dry out and create conditions as equitable as possible for all runners.

Second Tampa Purse Increase Kicks in Feb. 3

Tampa Bay Downs horsemen and horsewomen will benefit from another increase in purse money beginning Wednesday. The approximate 10% boost will provide a $1,000 increase for all maiden special weight, allowance, claiming and starter races.

Peter Berube, the track's Vice President-General Manager, said a double-digit gain in simulcast wagering has more than offset a decline in on-track wagering, making the second increase of the 2020-2021 meeting possible. The track had raised purses by approximately 10% Dec. 16.

Tampa Bay Downs is averaging $4.1-million in daily handle on its product, a 15%t increase from the same period last season. On-track wagering has fallen 25%, mostly attributable to the effect of COVID-19 on attendance.

“Our Thoroughbred signal is among the most popular in the country each winter and continues to gain new players, thanks to the size of our fields (an average of 8.4 horses a race) and our outstanding turf program,” Berube said. “We are pleased to use the increased revenue to support the people who make our racing competitive and challenging for serious handicappers and $2 bettors alike.”

Thanks To Strong Handle, Fair Grounds Will Increase Purses Another 10 Percent

For the second time in the young 2020-21 meet, Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots has announced a 10 percent purse increase across the board. Much like the first, the boost was inspired by strong simulcast handle during the first seven weeks of the 149th racing season, which includes solid bettor response to the newly implemented traditional early and late Pick 5 wagers.

“Despite losing multiple days of turf racing, handle has remained quite strong,” Fair Grounds' racing secretary Scott Jones said. “Condition book four will be released the beginning of next week, and we're happy to be in a position to raise purses for a second time. We'd once again like to thank the owners, trainers and fans who have been supporting our day-to-day racing product.”

As a result of the increase, which will go into effect for condition book #4 (which starts Feb. 3, 2021), purses on allowance races will be bumped up $5,000, the mid-level races will be boosted by $3,000, while all other races will receive a $2,000 hike. Maiden special weight races will now be worth $55,000. The purse increase includes both open races and Louisiana-bred races.

Entries for the Wednesday, Feb. 3 card will be drawn one week earlier on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2021.
