Stobie & CTA Continue Heroic Acts for Horses Every Day

Based in Puerto Rico, the mission of Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare Inc. (CTA), is rehabilitation, retraining, retirement, and adoption for Thoroughbreds in the Caribbean. The organization recently posted on its Facebook page images of the three Thoroughbreds they most recently accepted from Hippodrome Camarero, the Thoroughbred track in Puerto Rico. All three, Salary Cap (Street Boss), Too Fast For Love (Harlington), or Keep Me Grounded (First Samurai) will need rehabilitation and have only a chance at being sound for trail or light riding. Since December, CTA has been looking for a home for Afleet Accompli (Afleet Alex) who ran 63 times and earned close to $200,000. Like Too Fast For Love and Keep Me Gounded, who ran 45 and 42 times, respectively, are what CTA Executive Director Kelley Stobie calls ‘war horses’.

Afleet Accompli was brought to the attention of CTA by a race fan on the mainland who tries to keep track of all of Afleet Alex’s offspring. Before COVID-19, there was a chance that Afleet Accompli would be going to Old Friends, however, that opportunity is now in question. A lifetime sanctuary for the hundreds of imported Thoroughbreds that must retire every year from Camarero does not currently exist on Puerto Rico, or on the mainland.

“80% of the horses that we are asked to take are imports,” said Stobie. “And it is rare that we get an imported horse that is sound for athletic or competitive riding careers. It breaks my heart. These are war horses and they are worn out. There are very limited homes here for a happy pasture sound or trail-riding horse.”

CTA is accredited by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA) and receives an annual grant from the organization. Stobie has also worked out a small institutionalized funding program with the racetrack and the local breeders. But keeping horses in Puerto Rico is more difficult and more expensive than what it is on the mainland and the cost of shipping a horse back to the mainland including quarantine, flight and paperwork is $3,294 per horse. So, Stobie and CTA are often faced with the reality of having to euthanize pasture sound horses.

CTA often makes happy headlines when, with the help of sponsors, they are able to ship high-profile “war horses’ back to the U.S. and find placement for them. One such horse was Immortal Wink (Gimmeawink), who raced 142 times before retiring four years ago at age 10 and now resides in Florida at the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation facility at the Lowell Correctional Facility farm for women. Currently, the breeders of Keep Me Grounded are working on getting him back to Kentucky to retire into a similar program.

“It is great when the breeders or former owners step up and help us to get a horse back to the mainland for retirement,” said Stobie. “For some horses, the trip back and quarantine are hard. That is why we feel a sanctuary on Puerto Rico as well as a program and funding to return more horses are necessary. Horses continue to be imported, but there is no plan for a return ticket for their retirement.”

The unregulated transport of racehorses to Puerto Rico has recently been in the news. The Horse Racing Confederation of Puerto Rico is involved in litigation over the death of nine horses who died in 2019 when being shipped by boat from Jacksonville, Florida to San Juan.

On Jan. 25, 2018, Stobie and co-founder Shelley Blodgett were awarded a special Eclipse award recognizing their heroism, bravery, and benevolence in the face of tragedy for their Hurricane Maria efforts. One might be hard-pressed to find two more competent, savvy and hard-working people in the Thoroughbred rescue world.

In their work, every day takes heroism. Every day they face the pressure of more horses coming their way than they have the room or the funds to care for as well as the added pressure of having to raise funds to ship horses back to the mainland.

“It costs us upward of $50,000 a year to ship the horses who can withstand the journey and additional quarantine time to adoptive homes and other accredited agencies on the mainland that have room,” said Stobie. “As the news of the storms slowed down, so did our donations. But horses continue to be imported to Puerto Rico to race and then they are forgotten. We are on a mission to make sure that a plan gets put in place so that all Thoroughbreds in Puerto Rico receive the retirement that they deserve.”

It is hurricane season again and CTA has taken steps to weather any bad storms.

“We are able to take our horses to a friend’s farm that is on high ground and we have a new container to store hay and feed,” said Stobie. “We also work closely with Dr. Ricardo Loinaz at the racetrack clinic and we can rely on him for help with veterinary care and supplies. We are all better prepared than we were in years past.”

‘Time To Challenge Myself’: Victor Carrasco Moves Tack To Monmouth Park

After nearly seven years as a fixture on the Maryland racing circuit, jockey Victor Carrasco said it was simply time for a change. Because of that desire to shake up things with his career – and even though he continued to have success at Laurel Park – the 28-year-old Eclipse Award-winning apprentice from 2013 will call Monmouth Park home this summer for the first time.

Monmouth's 75th season gets underway on Friday, July 3. First post for the six-race twilight card is 5 p.m.

“I've spent almost my entire career in Maryland. It's time to challenge myself and to try something different,” said Carrasco, who recorded his 1,000th career victory in January. “Things in Maryland were fine. It's just time to try something different, meet new people, and take on a new challenge.

“Hopefully, it leads to better opportunities to ride in better races.”

The Guyama, Puerto Rico, native will find a jockey colony that is both deep and proven when Monmouth Park's 37-day meet gets started with three straight days of live racing over the July 4 holiday weekend.

Returnees include Paco Lopez, coming off a sixth riding title at the track; Joe Bravo, who has a record 13 leading riding titles at Monmouth; Nik Juarez, the runnerup to Lopez a year ago in the standings, and reliable veteran Jose C. Ferrer.

Antonio Gallardo, fresh off a riding title at Tampa Downs, and Trevor McCarthy, both of whom have ridden part-time at Monmouth in the past, are expected on a full-time basis as well.

Wilmer Garcia, Tomas Mejia, Mychel Sanchez, Chris DeCarlo and Angel Suarez add to the depth of the jockey roster.

“I believe I have the talent to compete here,” said Carrasco. “I work hard. The reason I am renting a place close to the track for the summer is because I want to be here every day so the trainers and owners can see how hard I work.

“If I get the right connections who knows what will happen? I'll do my best.”

Carrasco, who graduated from Escuela Vocacional Hipica Jockey School in Puerto Rico before embarking on his riding career, comes from a racing family. His grandfather, now retired, was a long-time trainer in Puerto Rico. His uncle is a trainer on the Mid-Atlantic circuit.

Despite his immediate success as the nation's leading apprentice in 2013, Carrasco has had to overcome his share of devastating injuries, having been in spills that resulted in a broken hand, a broken ankle, a broken scapula and, most recently in a nasty spill at Delaware Park in 2017, a fractured fibula, tibia, ankle and leg.

He has overcome all of the injuries to return to peak form.

“The last one was especially tough,” he said. “Being a person who is active and likes to work out it was tough being forced to stay at home for such a long time, not being able to walk, needing my mother's help to do basic things. But I was determined to come back because this is what I love to do.

“I don't think about the injuries any more. In the beginning it's difficult mentally, especially when you go back to places where you got hurt. But then you gain your confidence back and things get back to normal. I don't even think about that stuff now. It's all behind me.”

In addition to owning an Eclipse Award, Carrasco won the summer riding titles at Laurel in 2015 and 2017 and captured the 2015 Pimlico spring meet riding title.

The $1 million Haskell Stakes will again highlight Monmouth Park's summer meet, with the Grade 1 fixture for 3-year-olds offering points for the Kentucky Derby on Sept. 5 for the first time and “Win and You're In” status for the Breeders' Cup Classic. Monmouth Park is also offering a $1 million bonus to a horse that wins the Haskell, Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic.

Post times on Saturdays and Sundays will be 12:50 p.m., with the meet running through Sept. 27.

Admission and parking are free except for Haskell Day.

‘Almost Like Starting Over’: Jockey Emanuel Nieves Working His Way Back From Injury

Several former leading riders will be gunning for a repeat title this year at Harrah's Louisiana Downs in Bossier City, La., including Emanuel Nieves.

The 27-year-old Nieves was born in Puerto Rico and learned his craft at Puerto Rico's Escuela Vocational Hipica, the famed jockey school near San Juan. It is a two-year program that has produced some of the top riders in North America, including Eclipse Award winning jockey Irad Ortiz and his brother, Jose.

Nieves made his riding debut in 2012 at Finger Lakes in New York, but Louisiana has been his circuit for the past three years. He credits his agent, Ronald Ardoin for his success as the former jockey works very hard and has solid relationships with pretty much every trainer in the region.

He was the leading rider at Harrah's Louisiana Downs in 2018, winning 85 races, but last year was much tougher. He was injured in a spill during the second week of the meet and underwent surgery. His recovery took over four months before he was cleared to ride. The remainder of the year was very challenging as he had to rebuild his business.

“It was very hard to get back,” admitted Nieves. “Many of my trainers had secured other riders at Evangeline Downs. It was almost like starting over.”

However, the support from many horsemen returned and Nieves is healthy and was ready when the Harrah's Louisiana Downs Thoroughbred season began on Saturday, June 6. He showed his prowess in the saddle winning the final race of the card with Leadem Farm Inc's Friendlyproduction. The 3-year-old colt by Run Production was making his debut for trainer Joseph Smith. Smith had no expectations as the $10,000 purchase had not been showing much in his morning works.

“I just told Emanuel that I wasn't sure what we had, but to just figure it out,” said Smith.

In the early stages the Louisiana-bred was well behind the early pacesetters, but Nieves patiently guided his colt to the outside and drew off to a resounding eight-length victory. His morning line was 12-1, but he was completely overlooked in the wagering and returned $86 to those savvy handicappers that saw his potential!

Smith, who was an assistant in Texas to trainer Danny Pish until he went on his own in 2013, credits Nieves for a very patient ride on Friendlyproduction.

“Truthfully, I don't know how many other riders would have done as well,” added Smith. “They might just have given up, but not Emanuel! I have a small stable, so a win like that means a great deal to me and my owners.”

Friendlyproduction is entered back on Monday, June 22 and Nieves will have the return call at odds of 9-2.

Nieves is grateful to all the horsemen who continue to give him opportunities and does not dwell on the misfortune of 2019. Healthy and a proud new daddy to his 8-month-old son, Ian, he is more focused this year than ever. He strives to work hard in the mornings, win races in the afternoon and spend quality time with his wife and son.

“It's not how you start, but how you finish,” said Nieves.
