Champion Echo Zulu Leads Asmussen Workers

A trio of Breeders' Cup-bound horses trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen had their first works at Santa Anita Friday.

Drilling easy half miles under the watchful eye of assistant Scott Blasi were Echo Zulu (Gun Runner), who went the distance in 50.80 seconds and Society (Gun Runner), who completed her move in 50.20 seconds.

Also working for Asmussen was Private Creed (Jimmy Creed), who was officially clocked going three furlongs in 37.40 seconds.

“This was their first work on the racetrack so we didn't want to do a whole lot,” Blasi said. “It was just a maintenance breeze to get them used to the surface.”

Echo Zulu, the champion 2-year-old filly of 2021, is a perfect 3-for-3 this campaign including a win in the GI Ballerina S. most recently Aug. 26 at Saratoga. She is being pointed to either the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint going six furlongs against males or the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at seven furlongs. Both races are slated for Nov. 4 at Santa Anita.

Society is headed to the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff at 1 1/8 miles the same day at Santa Anita. Private Creed is targeting the five-furlong GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint Nov. 4.

Asmussen and Blasi plan to work two more Breeders' Cup hopefuls on Saturday at Santa Anita: Clairiere (Curlin), who will also go in the Distaff; and Gunite (Gun Runner), who is possible for either the Sprint or Dirt Mile, both also Nov. 4.

In other Breeders' Cup news, top-rated Classic contender Arcangelo (Arrogate) walked the shedrow and appeared to be doing well the morning after having his first work at Santa Anita.  On Thursday, the Belmont and Travers winner drilled five furlongs in 1:02.20 for trainer Jena Antonucci.

Jimmy Creed Colt Solidifies His Spot in Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint

Private Creed, a last-out winner of the $500,000 Global Tote Juvenile Turf Sprint S. at Kentucky Downs Sept. 8, added another notch to the win column in Sunday's Indian Summer S. while earning an automatic spot in the starting gate for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint S. to be run over the same Keeneland course and distance Nov. 4.

Off as the second choice with the scratch odds-on morning-line favorite Love Reigns (Ire) (U S Navy Flag)–who is reportedly training up to the Breeders' Cup–Private Creed was taken in hand by Joel Rosario early to attempt to save some ground from the 10 post. He tugged his way up into fourth just behind the leaders at the top of the lane, and slowly built up his momentum to eventually reel in Love Reigns's favored stablemate No Nay Hudson) in the final sixteenth. An extremely green Mo Stash was flying late, but ran out of real estate and came up 3/4 of a length short. No Nay Hudson held third.

“It worked out perfect,” said Rosario. “He showed a lot of speed, [coming from] the post position on the outside. The whole time I was just the passenger. He did the job.”

A $45,000 KEESEP yearling turned $155,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic juvenile off a :10 3/5 breeze but very strong gallop out, the bay graduated on debut at Ellis July 30, and was third–one slot and 3/4 of a length behind No Nay Hudson–in Saratoga's Skidmore S. Aug. 19. Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen added blinkers ahead of the race at Kentucky Downs, which was contested over 6 1/2 panels.

“He acts like he'd go farther, but with the success he's having sprinting we're very happy to keep doing this with him for now,” said Asmussen, adding, “With the addition of blinkers he's two for two, so we definitely like that.”

The winner's dam was a minor stakes winner going two turns on the dirt and was purchased by Sharon and Ed Hudon's  Sierra Farm for $85,000 at KEENOV '15. Unlucky in her first three breeding seasons, South Andros's first foal to survive was Private Creed. Her yearling colt by Vino Rosso fetched $200,000 from Spendthrift Farm at Fasig-Tipton July. Next in the pipeline is a Complexity colt, and South Andros is back in foal carrying a full to Private Creed.

Jimmy Creed’s Private Creed Upsets Sharp Aza Tack In Global Tote Juvenile Sprint S.

After breaking his maiden on debut at Ellis Park July 30, Private Creed shipped to Saratoga to contest the Skidmore S., checking in third just two lengths behind winner Oxymore (Astern {Aus}). Back in Kentucky, the 5-2 second choice behind overwhelming favorite Sharp Aza Tack, racing with blinkers for the first time, utilized a similar racing style from his first two starts–tracking in third behind pacesetter Revere Note (Revolutionary) with the favorite racing between them. Tipped to the inside of his rival past the quarter pole, Private Creed engaged Sharp Aza Tack into the final sixteenth and got the better of him close to home for the three-quarter length upset.

“The one horse (Sharp Aza Tack) had so much speed,” said winning jockey Joel Rosario. “My horse was comfortable, he was happy where he was. He settled nicely going into the turn. For a second, I didn't know, as it took him a little time to get going. He just found another gear. He broke good and I was right there. Just a good trip.”

A $155,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale grad (:10.3), Private Creed has a yearling half-brother by Vino Rosso and a weanling half-brother by Complexity. South Andros was bred back to Jimmy Creed for a full-sibling to Private Creed in 2023. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.
