Enable to Bypass York, Run in September S.

Dual G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe heroine Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) will bypass an intended start at York and instead run in the Sept. 5 G3 September S., according to Juddmonte Racing Manager Teddy Grimthorpe. The Juddmonte colourbearer had originally been under consideration for the G1 Juddmonte International S. or the G1 Yorkshire Oaks in late August, but the Kempton 2400-metre event is now her target. The champion is eyeing a second title in the September, held over the all-weather, as she won it in 2018.

“Prince Khalid has decided that Enable’s next start will be the September S. [a] Group 3 at Kempton on Sept. 5,” Grimthorpe said in a statement. “As has been stated, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe remains her main objective.”

Enable is exiting a third win in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S., after running second in last season’s Arc and the July 5 G1 Coral-Eclipse S. at Sandown. If she had contested the Juddmonte International, she would be facing Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who won the 10-furlong Coral-Eclipse in good style. Arguably however, the Yorkshire Oaks would have provided even stiffer competition, as outstanding dual English Classic heroine Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is a certainty for that event, having won the Oaks by an impressive nine lengths on July 4.

Added Grimthorpe on the appeal of the Kempton feature, “The Kempton race worked well a couple of years ago. Obviously the temptation of York was quite a serious one, but we’ve always made it perfectly clear that the Arc is her main objective.

“Whoever turns up in the Yorkshire Oaks, you are going to have a tough race–it’s a Group 1. In theory, she should have a slightly easier task in a Group 3. Coupled with that, she’s won an Arc off the September S.–so from that point of view, that is a positive, and really we are just trying to give her every chance to get to the Arc in the best possible shape. The four weeks’ timing of the Kempton race before the Arc is probably spot on as well.”

‘She Is Back In Top Order’: Enable Cruises To Third King George VI & Queen Elilzabeth Victory

Under rainy skies, Prince Khalid Abdullah's 6-year-old mare Enable (GB), ridden by Frankie Dettori, overpowered Sovereign (IRE) and Japan (GB) en route to a record third win in Saturday's 1 ½-mile King George VI & Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes (G1) at Ascot in the United Kingdom. The 5 ½-length victory earned Enable a guaranteed starting position into the $6 million Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) through the international Breeders' Cup Challenge.

The Breeders' Cup Challenge is an international series of stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into a corresponding race of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which is scheduled to be held at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky, on Nov. 6-7.

Enable becomes the fourth horse this year to gain a “Win and You're In” berth for the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf. She joins Nao Da Mais (BRZ), who won the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini (G1) in Argentina, Lord North (IRE), who captured the Prince of Wales's Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot and Chrono Genesis (JPN), who took the Takarazuka Kinen (G1) in Japan.

Enable, the 2018 Longines Breeders' Cup Turf winner and a two-time champion of the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1), trained by John Gosden, improved her record to 14 wins in 17 starts. She captured the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 2017 and in 2019.

Dettori also tied Lester Piggott with a record seven wins in the King George VI.

Making her second start of the year since her defeat to Ghaiyyath (IRE) in the Coral-Eclipse (G1) at Sandown on July 5, Enable faced just two Aidan O'Brien-trained rivals in Japan, last year's Juddmonte International (G1) winner, and Sovereign, the 2019 Irish Derby (G1) winner. A third Ballydoyle runner, 2019 Investec Derby (G1) winner Anthony Van Dyck (IRE), was scratched earlier Saturday morning.

Sent off as the 4-9 favorite, Enable raced in second behind Sovereign, who extended to a six-length in the early going. On the turn for home, Dettori began to urge Enable. Closing the gap into the final furlong, Dettori peered over his left shoulder at Japan, who was not responding to encouragement from jockey Ryan Moore. The daughter of Nathaniel then swept past Sovereign to a commanding victory.

“Enable has really, really trained beautifully for this race,” said Gosden. “I made it very clear to everyone that she wasn't tuned properly for a mile and a quarter [in the Eclipse] at that pace, but the race put her right. I told Frankie to ride her with a lot of confidence and travel for a long as he could, and she did.

“She is back in top order, no doubt about that. We have been thrilled with her at home. I never expect things like that but I was expecting to see that, but life can be full of disappointments.”

“Obviously, we knew Sovereign was going to make the running and it was a bit of a cat and mouse situation with me and Ryan for the first couple of furlongs,” said Dettori. “He was happy to let me go, so I followed the pacemaker and, in fairness, it was a very even gallop. I was trying to time it so I did not hit the front too early and I couldn't hear a lot, so I looked around and I saw Ryan in trouble. Then it was a matter of hoping that, if I pressed the button, she would pick up and she did.”

In winning her 11th Group 1 race, Enable covered the 1 ½ miles in 2:28.92 over a course listed as good to firm.

As part of the benefits of the Challenge Series, Breeders' Cup will pay the entry fees for Enable to start in the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf, which will be run at 1 ½ miles over the Keeneland turf course. Breeders' Cup also will provide a travel allowance of US$40,000 for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships.

Enable Exits Eclipse Defeat Well

John Gosden is looking forward to the rest of the campaign with Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) despite the mare suffering the third defeat of her career on her seasonal bow in Sunday’s Coral-Eclipse at Sandown. A third G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe win remains her ultimate target in the autumn and she satisfied her trainer when second to Charlie Appleby’s Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) over a trip short of her optimum. However, Gosden believes Enable could face a tricky task at ParisLongchamp in October should G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas and G1 Investec Oaks winner Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) be in opposition, with the 6-year-old having to concede 7lb to her younger rival.

“She took it well, she had a good blow after the race,” said Gosden. “It’s always a worry when you haven’t run since October and she was coming back as a 6-year-old mare, but I thought her demeanour was wonderful. If you are a stock man and work with animals, you get used to them and I could feel and see that her metabolism had changed as she’s got older. She’s finding it hard to get tight, the race will have helped, but you can’t keep trying to do it at home.”

Looking towards the rest of the season, Gosden told At The Races, “The [July 25G1 ] King George would be the plan. We were lucky the Eclipse was only one day late because of everything, so we’ll look towards the King George, then York [Aug. 20 G1 Yorkshire Oaks] and Paris. I don’t want to over-race her.

“A third Arc would be an extraordinary achievement. This year you’ve got to look at the 3-year-olds. For me there was one outstanding 3-year-old performance in Europe and that was by a certain filly in the Oaks [Love].

“You start taking on a filly like that giving them weight, you’ve got a whole new problem on your hands. I think the Oaks winner would have won the Derby–the only thing that would get in her way was if it turned soft or heavy. She’s the standout 3-year-old.”

Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to Enable’s owner-breeder Khalid Abdullah, also expressed his satisfaction with the mare’s performance.

He said, “The expectation on her is enormous–we understand that. We’re really pleased with her and she’s come out of the race well. I think we made it pretty clear she would improve for the run. You’re rather damned if you do and damned if you don’t, as if she’d won easily everyone would have said we’d put people away and then if she’s beaten, people say we’re starting to make excuses already.

“I’m sure if Prince Khalid is happy that [King George] is where she’ll be going next, all being well.”

Gosden enjoyed Classic success at the weekend as Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) put up an excellent display to claim the G1 Prix du Jockey Club.

“He was impressive and quickened up very nicely,” said Gosden. “I think we’ll look to keep him against 3-year-olds as 10 furlongs looks his trip for now and there appears to be some decent older ones around, as we saw at Sandown yesterday. The [Aug. 15] Prix Guillaume d’Ornano which is a Group 2 for which Group 1 winners don’t carry a penalty looks suitable.”

Eclipse Remains Enable’s Target

The G1 Coral-Eclipse at Sandown remains the most likely comeback target for superstar mare Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}). The two-time G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe heroine was just denied in her bid for an historic third consecutive victory in the ParisLongchamp showpiece at the end of last season. Less than a fortnight later, Enable’s owner-breeder Khalid Abdullah delighted racing fans by confirming his charge would stay in training as a 6-year-old–with a return to Paris in the autumn top of the agenda. Connections decided against an appearance at Royal Ascot, but the owner’s racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe reports the John Gosden-trained mare to be firmly on course for the Eclipse on July 5 following a pleasing workout under Frankie Dettori last week.

“It’s been a gradual build-up–she’s a 6-year-old mare, so I don’t think John wants to do anything too quickly,” Grimthorpe told Sky Sports Racing. “She’s always told us when she’s ready to go, rather than the other way round. She’s had a couple of good works on the Limekilns on the Round Gallop–nothing too strenuous, but Frankie [Dettori] sat on her on Friday, and I think was very happy with her.”

Enable won the Eclipse, Ascot’s G1 King George and the G1 Yorkshire Oaks en route to the Arc last year–and a similar campaign may be in the offing.

Grimthorpe added, “She’s coming [to hand]. I think Prince Khalid is happy that we go to the Eclipse. She’s been in good form. I think it’s fair to say she will build-up towards the Arc. How she gets there will be up to her and John. I imagine it will be a fairly similar pattern [to last year]–there are only so many races that fall at the right time for her to get to ParisLongchamp. The Arc is the main target, and we’ll be guided by that.”
