Derby Winner Mage Confirmed For Preakness Start

Last Saturday's GI Kentucky Derby winner Mage (Good Magic) is officially headed to Baltimore for the May 20 GI Preakness S. His connections made the announcement via Twitter Friday morning.

“Very excited, he's had a magnificent week of training,” said co-owner Ramiro Restrepo. “He's shown all the positive signs.”

The ownership group, which also includes OGMA Investments, Sterling Racing and CMNWLTH, confirmed the colt's participation in the second leg of the Triple Crown at Pimlico Race Course following his Friday morning training session in which he warmed up in the mile chute before galloping about a mile and five furlongs beneath his regular exercise rider J.J. Delgado.

“It still really hasn't sunk in that we won the Kentucky Derby,” co-owner/assistant trainer Gustavo Delgado, Jr. said Thursday evening. “It's been a surreal last few days. The most important thing is the horse looks great. He's kept his weight and relaxed when training.”

Others pressing on from the Derby include Confidence Game (Candy Ride {Arg}, 10th) and 'TDN Rising Star' Disarm (Gun Runner, fourth), while new shooters include Red Route One (Gun Runner) and GIII Stonestreet Lexington S. winner and 'TDN Rising Star' First Mission (Street Sense).

Mage is expected to train around 7:45 Saturday morning before vanning to Baltimore that afternoon.

In other Preakness-related news, National Treasure (Quality Road) worked a half-mile in :47.40 Friday morning at Santa Anita  and will become trainer Bob Baffert's 25th Preakness starter next weekend. A victory in the race would be the eighth for the conditioner.

“This is a horse we've always been high on,” Baffert said. “He lost some training time ahead of the Santa Anita Derby, but he's been working well since. The Preakness distance shouldn't be a problem.”

A $500,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga graduate, National Treasure was third in last year's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile and was most recently fourth to Practical Move (Practical Joke) in the GI Santa Anita Derby Apr. 8.

Also making the trip to Maryland for Baffert are Havnameltdown (Uncaptured) for the GIII Chick Lang S.; undefeated 'TDN Rising Star' Faiza (Girvin) for the GII Black-Eyed Susan S.; and Arabian Lion (Justify) for the Sir Barton S.

KHRC: Forte on Mandatory 14-Day Vet’s List

A statement from the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission released Monday afternoon indicated that Forte (Violence) will not be eligible to run the Preakness Stakes, despite his owners' stated intention earlier in the day to do so.

The release, which was distributed Monday just before 4 p.m, reads:

“The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission has the following update on Forte:

Forte was scratched from the Kentucky Derby by KHRC veterinarians following Saturday's routine soundness checks. As is the case with all KHRC veterinary scratches related to soundness, and pursuant to HISA Rule 2241(a), this places Forte on a mandatory 14-day veterinary list. After 14 days, the requirements for removal from the list include a satisfactory workout performed for a state regulatory veterinarian and a negative blood sample result.”

Earlier in the day, trainer Todd Pletcher had indicated that Forte would work later this week and, all being well, would head to the Preakness. After watching the colt gallop at Churchill Downs Monday morning, Pletcher said:

“He looked very good. He galloped a mile and three-eighths very comfortably. Seemed happy like he normally is. He'll work probably Friday or Saturday.”

Asked if there was any sign left of the bruise that caused his scratch, Pletcher said, “No, I think that's completely subsided now. Right now, I'd say we're looking good to breeze for the Preakness. If we're happy with that, that's what we're thinking.”

HISA Rule 2241(a) reads:

Duration of Stay on the Veterinarians' List: Horses placed on the Veterinarians' List in accordance with Rule 2240 shall remain on the Veterinarians' List as follows: (a) Horses placed on the
Veterinarians' List for unsoundness or Epistaxis shall remain on the list for 14 days.

Rule 2240 governs horses that are placed on the vets' list, and reads:

2240. Veterinarians' List (a) A Veterinarians' List shall be maintained by the Authority of all Horses that are determined to be ineligible to compete in a Covered Horserace in any jurisdiction until
released by a Regulatory Veterinarian. (b) The following Horses shall be placed on the Veterinarians' List until removed in accordance with Rules 2241 and 2242:(1) Horses affected by illness, physical distress, medical compromise, unsoundness, injury, infirmity, heat exhaustion, positive test or overage, administration of a medication invoking a mandatory stand down time, administration of Shock Wave Therapy, positive Out-of-Competition test or any other assessment or determination by Regulatory Veterinarians that such Horse is unfit to race.

The TDN contacted the KHRC's Public Protection Cabinet, who distributed the release, for clarification, but the call had not been returned as of the filing of this story.

Pimlico’s Alibi Breakfast to Honor Jay Privman and Rob Carr

Recently retired Daily Racing Form columnist Jay Privman and Getty Images photographer Rob Carr will be among the honorees Preakness week at the annual Alibi Breakfast for their outstanding coverage of the 2022 GI Preakness S. The popular and historic breakfast–which dates back to the 1930s–will be held Thursday, May 18 at Pimlico Race Course.

Privman, an Eclipse Award winner, will be given the David F. Woods Award for his story on Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas. He had previously been honored with the same award in 2002 and 2013.

“Building up relationships over years, and having access to those in racing, are both paramount to make stories like this possible,” said Privman. “I thank Wayne for his time last year that morning at the Pimlico stakes barn as we went down memory lane, and I thank the Maryland Jockey Club for continuing its support and acknowledgement of the vital role racing media plays in telling the sport's stories.”

Carr will receive the Jerry Frutkoff Award for his image of jockey Jose Ortiz after the rider's Preakness win with Early Voting (Gun Runner). Carr has been covering Thoroughbred racing for more than 30 years and is also a previous winner of his award (2009 and 2017).

Red Route One Stamps His Preakness Ticket With Victory In Bath House Row S.

While currently ranked 28th in points and on the outside looking in for the GI Kentucky Derby, Red Route One punched his ticket to the second jewel of the Triple Crown with a win Saturday in the Bath House Row S.

After bursting onto the scene with a third to Derby favorite Forte (Violence) in the GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity last fall, Red Route One earned a pair of placings in both the GIII Southwest S. and the GII Rebel S. before faltering to sixth when last spotted in the GI Arkansas Derby. Racing with Lasix for the first time Saturday, the chestnut put his typical running style into action, breaking nicely but falling back to trail the field as Victory Formation paced them through a :22.87 opening quarter. Under an easy ride from eighth, he started to pick up the bridle into the far turn and tipped out to carry his momentum past the furlong pole. Tapit Shoes was game to the inside but Red Route One got the better bob to take the narrow win on the wire.
