Preakness Day To Be Conducted Without Fans In Attendance

The Stronach Group and the Maryland Jockey Club, owners of the legendary Preakness Stakes (G1), announced today that Preakness 145 will proceed without fans in attendance on October 3rd at Pimlico Race Course.

“The Stronach Group and the Maryland Jockey Club have been working closely in consultation with local and state health and governmental authorities for the past several months to thoughtfully and safely plan for Preakness 145,” said Belinda Stronach, Chairman and President, The Stronach Group and 1/ST. “While we had hoped to be able to welcome fans as we have for the past 145 years, the health and safety of our guests, horsemen, riders, team members and the community at large is, and will always be, our top priority. Although Preakness 145 will look and feel much different from all those that have come before it, 1/ST RACING is committed to delivering a day of world-class Thoroughbred horse racing.”

Fans will be able to join the excitement of Preakness 145 live on NBC from 4:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, October 3rd.

The Stronach Group and 1/ST have implemented industry-leading, rigorous safety and prevention measures for COVID-19. As such, only essential racing personnel and horsemen will be permitted on-site at Pimlico Race Course on race day. Preakness 145 will operate in full compliance with all state, county and local health department orders and will follow all current and recommended CDC precautions and safeguards to ensure the health and safety of the limited number of essential racing personnel and participants required.

Existing ticket holders that have already purchased tickets will have the option to either transfer their purchased tickets to next year's Preakness 146 or to apply for a full refund. For the first time since its inception, Preakness will represent the third jewel of the coveted Triple Crown and will feature an all-stakes program with $3.35 million in purses, including the 96th running of the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (G2). Additionally, 2020 will mark the first time that the winner of the Preakness Stakes, or of any Triple Crown race, will qualify for the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) in November as part of the Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” Challenge Series.

Preakness To Highlight All-Stakes Program At Pimlico On Oct. 3

Highlighted by the $1 million Preakness (G1), presented this year as the final jewel in a refashioned Triple Crown, the Maryland Jockey Club will serve up a total of 16 stakes, nine graded, worth $3.35 million in purses over Preakness weekend at Pimlico Race Course.

The 145th running of the 1 3/16-mile Preakness for 3-year-olds will anchor an all-stakes program of 12 races, seven graded, worth $2.7 million on Saturday, Oct. 3. It will be joined this year by the 96th renewal of the $250,000 Black-Eyed Susan (G2), one of the country's premiere events for 3-year-old fillies, contested at 1 1/8 miles.

Turf runners 3 and up will travel 1 1/16 miles in the $250,000 Dinner Party (G2), previously run as the Dixie, now in its 119th year. Pimlico's oldest stakes race and the eighth-oldest in the country, it was named the Dinner Party for its 1870 debut and run at two miles.

Other grass stakes on the Preakness program are the $150,000 Gallorette (G3) for fillies and mares 3 and up, $150,000 Laurel Futurity for 2-year-olds and $150,000 Selima for 2-year-old fillies, each going 1 1/16 miles; and $100,000 James W. Murphy for 3-year-olds and $100,000 Hilltop for 3-year-old fillies at one mile.

Joining the Preakness Day lineup this year is the $200,000 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash (G3) at six furlongs for 3-year-olds and up. Other sprint stakes on the card are the $150,000 Miss Preakness (G3) for 3-year-old fillies at six furlongs and $100,000 Skipat for fillies and mares 3 and up.

Rounding out the Oct. 3 stakes lineup is the $100,000 UAE President Cup (G1) for Arabians, contested at 1 1/16 miles for 4-year-olds and up.

The historic $250,000 Pimlico Special (G3) for 3-year-olds and up, returned to 1 3/16 miles after being contested at 1 ¼ miles in 2019, is the centerpiece of a Friday, Oct. 2 card that also serves as Claiming Crown Preview Day.

Each winner of the nine Claiming Crown Preview Day races will earn automatic entry and a stipend toward travel costs to the annual Claiming Crown Day program being held for the eighth consecutive year at Gulfstream Park. A similar preview was hosted at Laurel Park in 2015.

Preakness weekend will kick off Thursday, Oct. 1 with three stakes led by the $200,000 Chick Lang (G3) for 3-year-olds at six furlongs. It will be joined by a pair of five-furlong turf sprints, the $100,000 Jim McKay Turf Sprint for 3-year-olds and up and $100,000 The Very One for fillies and mares 3 and older.

Live racing will be conducted at Pimlico this year from Sept. 24-26 and Oct. 1-3.

Nominations for all Thoroughbred stakes, excluding the Preakness, close Thursday, Sept. 17. Nominations for the UAE President Cup for Arabians close Saturday, Sept. 19.

Preakness Over Derby? Pletcher-Trained Dr Post ‘Leaning’ Away From Louisville Trip

Trainer Todd Pletcher may be without a Kentucky Derby starter for the first time since 2003, reports drf.com. His trainee Dr Post is qualified for the Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs, but owner Vinnie Viola is leaning away from sending the Belmont runner-up and Haskell third-place finisher to Louisville, Ky.

“We haven't made a final decision yet,” Pletcher told drf.com. “Wait and see how things go this week. I would say it's leaning more towards not going than going.”

Instead of the Kentucky Derby, Dr Post may be pointed to the Preakness Stakes on Oct. 3, or there is a chance he could run in the Jim Dandy Stakes on Sept. 5.

Dr Post, by Quality Road, has a record of 2-1-1 from five starts for earnings of $361,635.

Meadowlands-at-Monmouth Meet Added to Racing Schedule for October

A nine-day Meadowlands-at-Monmouth Park meet will be added to the Thoroughbred racing calendar starting on Preakness Day, Saturday, Oct. 3, pending regulatory approval.

Live racing will be held Oct. 3 and 4 at Monmouth Park and then every Wednesday and Saturday for the remainder of the month. There will also be a special Columbus Day holiday program Monday, Oct. 12.

The Meadowlands-at-Monmouth meet will feature a stakes schedule totaling $900,000, highlighted by the GIII Monmouth S. at 1 1/8 miles on the turf Oct. 10.

First race post time throughout October will be 12:50 p.m. Parking and admission are free.

Monmouth Park was originally scheduled for a 56-day meet starting May 2, but had that reduced to 37 days starting July 3 because of COVID-19. An additional live racing program was lost due to inclement weather.

The Monmouth Park meeting ends on Sunday, Sept. 27.
