Wild On Ice Leads Dozen Late Triple Crown Nominees

Frank Sumpter's Wild On Ice (Tapizar), winner of Sunday's GIII Sunland Park Derby, is one of a dozen 3-year-olds nominated to the Triple Crown with a late payment of $6,000 by Monday's deadline. The other late nominees (pending late mail) are: Middleham Park Racing's Road to the Kentucky Derby Condition Stakes winner Brave Emperor (Ire) (Sioux Nation); Adam Ference and Bill Dory's El Camino Real Derby winner Chase the Chaos (Astern {Aus}); John Salzman Jr., Fred Wasserloos and Anthony Geruso's multiple stakes winner Coffeewithchris (Ride on Curlin); Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, Westerberg and Jonathan Poulin's Animal Kingdom S. winner Eye Witness (City of Light); The Del Mar Group's Sunland Park Derby third-place finisher Henry Q (Blame); Lucky Seven Stable's maiden special weight winner and GI Arkansas Derby entrant Interlock Empire (Classic Empire); Brereton Jones and Naber Racing's maiden special weight winner and GI Arkansas Derby entrant King Russell (Creative Cause); Big Chief Racing's recent $50,000 claim and Arkansas Derby entrant Kolomio (Constitution); C2 Racing Stable's maiden special weight winner and GI Curlin Florida Derby entrant Mr. Peeks (California Chrome); C2 Racing Stable and Stefania Farms maiden special weight winner and Florida Derby entrant Nautical Star (Dixie Chatter); and LC Racing's two-time stakes winner Ninetyprcentmaddie (Weiglia).

There are now 381 sophomores eligible to compete in the Triple Crown series. Any horse not nominated during the early or late phases can become Triple Crown eligible through a supplemental nomination payment due at the time of entry for each Triple Crown race: Kentucky Derby ($200,000), Preakness ($150,000) and Belmont ($50,000).

Preakness Weekend To Feature 15 Stakes Worth $3.5 Million

Nine stakes–of which five are graded–worth $2.5 million in purses will highlight the 148th running of the GI Preakness S., which will be contested this year on Saturday, May 20. Overall, 15 stakes–including the 99th running of the GII Black-Eyed Susan S. on Friday, May 19–will be contested over two days of racing at Pimlico.

Other graded stakes on the Preakness undercard are the GIII $200,000 Dinner Party S. for 3-year-olds and up going 1 1/8 miles on the grass, GIII $200,000 Chick Lang S. for 3-year-olds at six furlongs, the GIII $100,000 Maryland Sprint S. for 3-year-olds and up also racing three-quarters of a mile, and GIII $100,000 Gallorette S. for fillies and mares, three years old up going 1 1/16 miles on the turf.

The historic GIII $300,000 Pimlico Special for 3-year-olds and up, contested at the Preakness distance of 1 3/16 miles, and GIII $150,000 Miss Preakness S. for 3-year-old fillies sprinting six furlongs top the Black-Eyed Susan undercard.

Report: 1/ST Racing Planning on Holding Pegasus Races at Santa Anita in 2024

According to an Associated Press report, 1/ST Racing, which owns Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita, intends to bring the Pegasus format to the California in 2024.

“I'd really love to see that we bring it to the West Coast,” 1/ST President and CEO Belinda Stronach told the AP. “That will probably happen in 2024. What we did this year for 2023 was said, 'OK, we have a number of great race days, let's coordinate those better and call it the 1/ST Racing Tour and recognize great achievements within our own footprint.'”

The wire service reported that the plan is to have two Pegasus days in 2024, one at Gulfstream and the other at Santa Anita, with each program including turf and dirt races. It was not immediately clear where the two race days would fit into the calendar and what races would be run at each track. Stronach made it clear that the 2024 schedule will include Pegasus races at Gulfstream, the only home the events has known since it began in 2017.

“This is staying here in Miami,” Stronach said. “Pegasus has a home here in Miami. We can't move Pegasus from Miami. We have great partners here and it's more than just a day now. We have deep roots here in Miami.”

A California Pegasus will join the 1/ST Racing Tour, a package that includes many of the biggest days and races at the 1/ST tracks, including the GI Preakness S. at Pimlico. The tour also includes the runnings of the GI Florida Derby and the GI Santa Anita Derby.

“We can never rest on our laurels,” Stronach said. “We have to keep moving forward. We have a great team that's really committed.”

Epicenter Makes His Way to Ashford Stud

Grade I winner Epicenter (Not This Time), who suffered a displaced condylar fracture to his right front leg during the running of the Nov. 5 GI Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland, on Friday was sent to Coolmore's Ashford Stud near Versailles, KY, where he will stand his first season at stud this year, Winchell Thorougbreds racing manager David Fiske tweeted. The winner of last year's GI Runhappy Travers. S. and GII Jim Dandy S. had been recuperating from the injury and subsequent surgery, conducted by Dr. Larry Bramlage at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital Nov. 6, at Rebecca Maker's Shantera Farm.

Epicenter, who also won the GII Risen Star S. and finished second behind Rich Strike (Keen Ice) in the GI Kentucky Derby and Early Voting (Gun Runner) in the GI Preakness S. for trainer Steve Asmussen, ended his career with a record of 11-6-3-0 and $2,940,639 in earnings. He is a finalist for the Eclipse Award as 2022's top 3-year-old male.
