Monday Morning Qb ‘Raring To Go,’ Could Target Preakness Stakes

Cash is King and LC Racing's stakes-winning 3-year-old Monday Morning Qb, a game second behind undefeated Happy Saver in the Federico Tesio Sept. 7 at Laurel Park off a seven-month layoff, is under consideration for the 145th Preakness Stakes (G1) Oct. 3 at Pimlico Race Course.

The 1 3/16-mile Preakness, run this year as the final jewel in a refashioned Triple Crown while serving as a “Win and You're In” qualifier for the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), anchors a weekend of 16 stakes, nine graded, worth $3.35 million in purses Oct. 1-3.

Monday Morning Qb earned his lone stakes victory last December in the seven-furlong Heft at Laurel Park and was briefly on the Triple Crown trail, finishing fourth in the 1 1/8-mile Withers (G3) Feb. 1 at Aqueduct. The sizeable Maryland-bred son of Imagining was given time after that race to mature and develop, returning to trainer Robert E. 'Butch' Reid Jr. last month.

He was entered but unable to draw into the field for a one-mile turf allowance Aug. 28 at Laurel and wound up launching his comeback in the 1 1/8-mile Tesio, the traditional local prep for the Preakness. He set solid fractions of 24.76 seconds, 48.82 and 1:13.13 before being overtaken at the head of the stretch by Happy Saver but battled on despite failing to switch leads, finishing 1 ½ lengths behind the winner but nine lengths clear of Big City Bob in third.

“He ran very well considering the layoff. To come back going a mile and an eighth was not an easy task, so we were very pleased with his effort,” Reid said. “He came out of it well. He's been back to the track and he looks happy and raring to go. He was definitely tired afterwards but after a couple days he bounced right back. We're real happy with him.

“I think if he switched leads, I'm not saying we would have beat that horse but he'd have been a lot closer I believe,” he added. “He's got a little bit of a concentration problem that we have to work on to get him to switch leads turning for home. He's kind of always had that habit. It's unfortunate because he does it perfectly in the morning.”

The Tesio was Monday Morning Qb's second straight race at two turns. His sire was a multiple graded-stakes winner going long on the grass including the 2014 Man o' War (G1) for Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey, and earned nearly $1.2 million in purses.

“We felt all along he'd get two turns,” Reid said. “We really think he's going to route on turf is what he's going to end up being. We'll think about getting him on the turf. I would like to try that before the end of the year, for sure.”

To that end, Reid said the connections are also considering the $100,000 James W. Murphy on the Preakness undercard. The Murphy, also for 3-year-olds, is contested at a mile on the grass.

“We're looking at both races. We still haven't ruled out the Preakness, to be honest with you,” Reid said. “The Murphy for straight 3-year-olds going a mile on the turf [is interesting]. We'll definitely make him eligible for both of those races and pick our best spot from there.”

Ny Traffic Lost Shoe In Kentucky Derby; Colt May Target Oct. 3 Preakness Stakes

Ny Traffic exited his eighth-place finish in last Saturday's Kentucky Derby (G1) with a cut in his left front ankle, but trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. hasn't ruled out the Oct. 3 Preakness Stakes (G1) as a possible next start for the son of Cross Traffic.

“We got a couple cuts. He has a staple in his ankle from a cut he got. It looks like he should be OK. Within 7 to 10 days we'll decide,” Joseph said. “The main thing is the staple and when it gets taken out, how it's going to be.”

Ny Traffic also lost right front shoe in the Derby, in which he showed early speed to chase pacesetter and eventual winner Authentic while racing five wide before tiring.

“Would I say he ran his best race? No,” Joseph said. “I don't know when he lost his shoe. When you're at that level, you need to have everything go right. He wasn't the best horse in the race to begin with, so he can't afford to give away advantages.”

Ny Traffic, who came within a nose of defeating victorious Authentic in the July 18 Haskell (G1) at Monmouth, won his first start for Joseph in a Jan. 11 optional claiming allowance at Gulfstream Park. The New York-bred colt earned his way to the Kentucky Derby with a third-place finish in the Risen Star (G2) and runner-up finish in the Louisiana Derby (G2) at Fair Grounds before falling just short of catching Authentic in the Haskell.

Tonalist's Shape, a disappointing fifth as the favorite in the Charles Town Oaks (G3) last time out, is being considered for the Black-Eyed Susan (G2), which will be run on the Preakness undercard this year.

“She's back in Florida now. We haven't decided what to do with her yet,” Joseph said. “It's possible she could run there.”

Tonalist's Shape captured the Forward Gal (G3) and Davona Dale (G2) during Gulfstream's 2019-2020 Championship Meet.

Stronach Group To End Playing Of ‘Maryland, My Maryland’ At Preakness Stakes

“Maryland, My Maryland” has been played before the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico every year since 1909, but The Racing Biz reports that streak will end this year.

Adopted as the state song in 1939, “Maryland, My Maryland” was originally written in 1861 by James Ryder Randall in an effort to urge the state to join the Confederacy.

Maryland House Speaker Adrienne Jones (D-Baltimore County) announced in June that she would lead a legislative effort to remove it as the state song in 2021.

“The Maryland Jockey Club is respectful and supportive of Speaker Jones' move to remove 'Maryland My Maryland' as the state song, and we look forward to starting a new tradition for Preakness 145,” reads a Stronach Group statement issued after Jones' announcement.

Authentic Vaults To Fourth In Weekly Breeders’ Cup Classic Rankings

Fresh off his dramatic front-running victory in last Saturday's 1 ¼-mile Kentucky Derby (G1), Authentic jumped from No. 11 to No. 4 in the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic Rankings, while top-rated Maximum Security increased his lead over Derby runner-up Tiz the Law. The 2020 Longines Breeders' Cup Classic Rankings is a weekly poll of the top 10 horses in contention for the $7 million Longines Breeders' Cup Classic (G1). The 1 ¼-mile Classic, scheduled to be run on Nov. 7 at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky., is the climactic race of the Breeders' Cup World Championships.

The Longines Breeders' Cup Classic Rankings are determined by a panel of leading Thoroughbred racing media, horseplayers and members of the Breeders' Cup Racing Directors/Secretaries Panel. Rankings will be announced each week through Oct. 13. A list of voting members can be found here.

Authentic, owned by Spendthrift Farm, MyRaceHorse Stable, Madaket Stables and Starlight Racing, gave Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert a record-tying sixth Kentucky Derby win. The 3-year-old son of Into Mischief defeated Sackatoga Stable's odds-on favorite Tiz the Law by 1 ¼ lengths in 2:00.61 under Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez.

Authentic (167 votes) earned a Breeders' Cup Challenge automatic berth into the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic when he won the TVG.com Haskell Stakes (G1) at Monmouth Park on July 18. Now with five wins in six starts, Authentic is slated to run next in the “Win and You're In” Preakness Stakes (G1) at Pimlico Race Course on Oct. 3.

Gary and Mary West, Michael Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier and Derrick Smith's Maximum Security (238 votes) widened his lead to 58 points over Tiz the Law in the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic Rankings. The 4-year-old bay son of 2013 Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner New Year's Day won the inaugural Saudi Cup, the San Diego Handicap (G1) and the TVG Pacific Classic (G1) this year. Trained by Bob Baffert, Maximum Security earned 16 first-place votes this week.

Tiz the Law (180 votes) holds onto second place in the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic Rankings after suffering his first defeat this year after dominant wins in the Holy Bull (G3), Florida Derby (G1), Belmont Stakes (G1) and the Runhappy Travers (G1). The New York-bred son of Constitution could bypass the Preakness and train up to the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic.

GMB Racing's 7-year-old Tom's d'Etat (179 votes), winner of the Stephen Foster (G2) for trainer Al Stall Jr., remained in third place.

Following Authentic in fifth place is the 4-year-old Improbable (162 votes), the third Baffert-trained horse in the top five. Owned by WinStar Farm, CHC Inc., and SF Racing, Improbable captured the Hollywood Gold Cup Stakes (G1) and the “Win and You're In” Whitney (G1) at Saratoga this year.

The sixth-ranked horse is Allied Racing Stable's By My Standards (114 votes), who won his third graded stakes race of the year with an impressive score in last Saturday's 1 1/16-mile Alysheba (G2) at Churchill Downs for trainer Bret Calhoun.

W.S. Farish's 4-year-old Code of Honor (63 votes), trained by Claude R. “Shug” McGaughey III, remains in seventh place. The 4-year-old chestnut son of Noble Mission (GB) won the Westchester Stakes (G3) and was fourth in the Whitney in his last start.

Bruce Lunsford's Art Collector (53 votes), scratched from the Kentucky Derby early last week due to a minor foot issue, drops from sixth to eighth place. Trained by Tom Drury Jr., Art Collector, the Ellis Park Derby and Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2) winner, is a candidate for the Preakness Stakes.

The final two spots in the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic Rankings are completed by the top two finishers in Saturday's Woodward (G1) at Saratoga, Global Campaign and Tacitus.

Sagamore Farm and WinStar Farm's 4-year-old Global Campaign (41 votes) enters the top 10 for the first time at No. 9 after taking the Woodward by 1 ¾ lengths for his third win in four starts this year. Trained by Stanley Hough, Global Campaign won the Monmouth Cup (G3) prior to the Woodward.

Juddmonte Farms' Tacitus (39 votes), trained by Bill Mott, drops from eighth to 10th place.
