Irish Leger Success For Sonnyboyliston

Underlining the strength of York's revamped Ebor H., the Kildare Racing Club's Sonnyboyliston (Ire) (Power {GB}) bounced out of his success in that prestigious affair to bring up a notable double in Sunday's G1 Comer Group International Irish St Leger at The Curragh. With the dual winner Search For a Song (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) unable to make an impact this time, the Johnny Murtagh-trained 4-year-old had the Joseph O'Brien pair Twilight Payment (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) and Baron Samedi (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) to contend with and proved toughest to carry off the prize. Settled fifth off the gruelling pace which strung the field out, the 4-1 second favourite mastered Twilight Payment approaching the furlong pole and battled to a 3/4-of-a-length verdict over that rival, with Baron Samedi 1 1/2 lengths away in third. “I couldn't have asked it to go any better, we jumped and he got a lovely tow into the race,” Coen said. “They turned it into a real staying race and this lad keeps improving and keeps finding a way to win. This is my first proper year as number one jockey to Johnny and we've had a few good spins in England, but I really wanted to get this group 1 winner. For it to be a Classic and for Johnny is unbelievable.”

It was on this card 12 months ago that Sonnyboyliston burst onto the scene with a 4 1/4-length success in the 10-furlong “Northfields” H., where the subsequent G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup hero Helvic Dream (Ire) (Power {GB}) was back in third. That followed a narrow verdict over Thundering Nights (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) over the same course and distance in July and the eventual exploits of that filly now show that performance in a positive light. Starting this term with third placings behind the Ballydoyle duo Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}) and Japan (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) in the Listed Devoy S. at Naas Mar. 28 and the May 6 G3 Ormonde S. at Chester respectively, the chestnut took Limerick's Listed Martin Molony S. over 12 1/2 furlongs June 18 before finishing sixth over the Ebor track and trip in the July 10 G3 Silver Cup.

Coming out on top in his battle with the talented Quickthorn (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), who has also come out to score subsequently in dramatic style in a conditions race at Salisbury, Sonnyboyliston had every bit of resilience tested here with the G2 Curragh Cup winner Amhran Na Bhfiann (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) storming off in front. Twilight Payment attacked first in the straight and at first glance he looked to be travelling sweeter than the Murtagh stalwart in behind, but as soon as it became a true grind the winner came into his own to give the best time performance of the day. Search For a Song, who was sent off the 10-3 favourite, flattered briefly in the straight but was unable to get involved in the fight and ended up sixth.

Murtagh was keen to deflect praise afterwards. “I'm just a front man to a lot of people who do a lot of hard work,” he said. “I'm so proud of everybody behind the scenes and my family also. It means a lot to win a Classic on your local track. This horse never disappoints and I thought he did very well to win today. It looked like a proper race and he had a good position all the way. He comes off the bridle, but I thought from two furlongs out Ben looked confident on him. He got into a battle, but he never lacks in a battle. I can't say enough about the horse and enough about Liam Clarke and the Kildare Racing Club. They have been great supporters of mine from the word go. It would take a fair offer to take him away from the owners now, but the Melbourne Cup is worth €2.5million. It mightn't be for him this year, but he's only four and could end up down there for us sometime yet.”

Sonnyboyliston's seven-times-winning dam Miss Macnamara (Ire) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}) is a half to the Argentinian group 3 winner Karamela (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) and the Listed Silken Glider S. winner and G3 Park Express S. runner-up Gemstone (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). The latter is the dam of the Listed Newmarket S. scorer UAE Jewel (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), while the family also features the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas hero Bachelor Duke (Miswaki) and the GI Shoemaker Mile S. winner Talco (Fr) (Pivotal {GB}). Miss Macnamara's 2-year-old filly is by Starspangledbanner (Aus), while she also has a filly foal by Gleneagles (Ire).

Jean Prat Surprise As Power’s Laws Of Indices Prevails

Unexposed at this seven-furlong trip and staying on in eye-catching fashion when fifth in the G1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot June 18, Charlotte Holmes's G2 Railway S. winner Laws of Indices (Ire) (Power {GB}) benefitted from a masterclass of front-running riding from Olivier Peslier to take Sunday's G1 Haras d'Etreham Prix Jean Prat at Deauville. Sent off at 29-1, the Ken Condon-trained bay quickly established a comfortable lead racing up the centre and saw off one by one the threats of the fillies Reina Madre (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) and Valloria (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}) and the highly-regarded Andre Fabre-trained 31-10 favourite Midtown (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) heading to the furlong pole. The last to throw down a challenge was the TDN Rising Star Thunder Moon (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) and that was the sternest of all, but his compatriot who had beaten him by almost six lengths on livelier ground in last year's G1 Goffs Vincent O'Brien National S. just couldn't get past in a frantic finish. At the line, there was a head between the Irish colts, with the previously unbeaten Midtown 1 1/2 lengths away in third justifying Fabre's belief on a tough seasonal introduction. “The trainer left it to me and I said I'd see how the race unfolded, but he was well-placed and I didn't hesitate to go on,” commented Peslier, who was registering a fifth win in the race in which he had enjoyed his first group 1 success on Le Balafre (Fr) (Groom Dancer) in 1993. “I had a lot of confidence in the horse and in me and it really paid off. He was very courageous and I'm delighted, as beforehand it didn't look like he had a chance on form.”

One of the surprise packages among the Irish juveniles last term, Laws of Indices broke his maiden over an extended five furlongs at Navan in June before beating Lucky Vega (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) when 66-1 for the six-furlong Railway at The Curragh. Fourth behind that rival in the G1 Phoenix S. over the same course and distance in early August, he was seventh tackling this trip for the first time in that venue's National S. in September and 8 3/4-lengths third behind Sealiway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) in ParisLongchamp's G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere in October. Carrying a three-pound penalty on his first two starts this season, he was fifth again at this trip behind Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) in the Listed Ballylinch Stud 2000 Guineas Trial S. at Leopardstown Apr. 11 before reverting to six and finishing a close-up fourth in the G3 Lacken S. at Naas May 16.

Despite finishing well adrift of Dragon Symbol (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}) and Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) at Royal Ascot, there was encouragement in the way Laws of Indices finished off there in testing ground that was hard work for all but especially the closers. This was a significant step forward on his recent efforts, but it was only the second time that forcing tactics were able to be employed on the bargain-basement €8,000 Goffs Autumn Yearling purchase who has had a tendency to get behind in his races and make his life harder than necessary. Perhaps it was the influence of one of France's genuine legends of the saddle, who was the latest to shine on the biggest stage in the year of the veteran jockey. Thunder Moon was bouncing back from two nondescript efforts at a mile and shaped as though this is a maximum trip, showing the same dramatic acceleration that he had at The Curragh last summer despite the preceding rain denting his chance.

Midtown, who was having his first start since winning Chantilly's Listed Prix Herod over this trip in November, was giving connections reason for optimism with his bold showing and Godolphin's Lisa-Jane Graffard commented, “It was a fantastic performance from Midtown and we are delighted with him. He is certainly entitled to come on for his first run in 235 days and we will see how he comes out of this before making any plans.”

Law of Indices is out of fast mare Sampers (Ire) (Exceed and Excel (Aus), a granddaughter of the G2 Prix de Malleret winner Privity (Private Account) who is a full-sister to the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud runner-up Zindari. from the family of the G1 Irish St Leger hero and sire Leading Counsel. This is also the family of Juddmonte's dual G3 John O'Gaunt S. winner and G1 July Cup runner-up Main Aim (GB) by Power's sire Oasis Dream (GB) and the triple group-winning Weightless (GB) (In the Wings {GB}). Sampers's yearling colt by Starspangledbanner (Aus) was a €80,000 purchase by Troy Steve Bloodstock at the Goffs November Foal Sale.

Tattersalls Gold Cup Glory For Helvic Dream

Beaten three times by Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}) already this term, Tom Hendron and Finbar Cahill's Helvic Dream (Ire) (Power {GB}) had been inching closer each time and chose the big occasion to turn it around as he denied that Ballydoyle rival in a thriller for the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup on Sunday. Benefitting from the heavily rain-eased going at The Curragh, the 4-year-old who emanates from the Noel Meade stable better known for its national hunt runners travelled smoothly on the inside in mid-division throughout the early stages. Filling the eye with Colin Keane motionless turning for home, the 8-1 shot had dead aim on the 10-11 favourite who had been committed by Ryan Moore approaching two out. Eventually asked to go and win his race, the gelding responded generously to overhaul Broome close home and prevail in a bobber by a short head, with a length back to the G3 Queen Elizabeth S. and Neom Turf Cup winner True Self (Ire) (Oscar {Ire}) in third. “I've won plenty of group 1s over jumps and had a number of horses placed in Guineas and a fourth in the Epsom Derby, so this feels just fantastic,” Meade said. “I was afraid to even dream about it. It means a lot and I can die happy now! It's a shame nobody is here, because you'd want to be going to the champagne bar over there!”

Having beaten the future luminary Champers Elysees (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}) by 4 3/4 lengths in a heavy-ground Roscommon median auction race that has subsequently taken on a different dimension in September 2019, Helvic Dream was tried over too far before narrowly missing out on a first black-type win when third in a blanket to the Listed Vincent O'Brien Ruby S. over a mile at Killarney in August. Third in the valuable “Northfields” H. over 10 furlongs here on Irish Champions weekend in September, he bounced out of that to beat the useful Up Helly Aa (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) by 7 1/2 lengths in the G3 International S. again over 10 furlongs on soft at this venue in October. Only eighth when the 5-4 favourite for the Listed Trigo S. at Leopardstown later that month, he was again flat on his return when a distant eighth behind Broome in the Listed Devoy S. at Naas Mar. 28. Narrowing that to 3 1/2 lengths next time when fourth in this track's G3 Alleged S. Apr. 17, he was just two lengths in arrears when second in the May 3 G2 Mooresbridge S. here last time.

Colin Keane delivered a masterclass in waiting ride tactics and said, “He relishes that soft ground and although I wasn't too sure we'd beat Broome, I did think he'd get a little bit closer. I thought he'd run well at Naas [in the Devoy], but he really disappointed us for whatever reason and the last day I got to Ryan [Moore] and he took off again. I wanted to have one crack at him and ideally, I should have waited another couple of strides again today. He's not short of pace and when he has those conditions I'd have no fear coming back in trip.”

Meade has no immediate plans for Helvic Dream. “He's improving all the time and Gillian O'Brien needs special mention here, as she treated him with a Chinese system which releases all the muscles and lets them loosen up. Two days after she'd done him, he was absolutely dancing down the yard. He could realistically be a horse for the [G1] Champion Stakes at Ascot, as you often get slow ground there which suits him. We'll have to think about a mile as well.” Aidan O'Brien said of Broome, “We were delighted and we're going up in trip with him now, for either the [June 4 G1] Coronation Cup [at Epsom] or the [June 19 G2] Hardwicke [at Royal Ascot].”

Helvic Dream is the first foal out of the unraced Rachevie (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), whose only other to date is this month's G3 Irish 1000 Guineas Trial runner-up Flirting Bridge (Ire) (Camelot {GB}). The second dam Challow Hills (Woodman) is kin to the multiple stakes winner Teide (Mt. Livermore) from the family of the G1 Epsom Oaks, G1 Irish Oaks and G1 Yorkshire Oaks heroine Diminuendo (Diesis {GB}) and her Listed Pretty Polly S.-winning full-sister Pricket who was runner-up in that Epsom Classic. Diminuendo in turn produced the G3 May Hill S. winner and G1 Fillies' Mile runner-up Calando (Storm Cat), herself the dam of the Listed Chesham S. winner Champlain (GB) (Seeking the Gold) and the Listed Silken Glider S. scorer Calare (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}).

Laws Of Indices Possible For Sandy Lane

Group 2 winner Laws of Indices (Ire) (Power {GB}), fourth in the G3 Goffs Lacken S. at Naas on May 16, will likely make a quick return in the G2 Sandy Lane S. at Haydock on May 22. Successful in the G2 Railway S. as a juvenile and third in the 2020 G1 Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere in October, the Ken Condon trainee was fifth in the Listed Ballylinch Stud “Red Rocks” 2000 Guineas Trial S. at Leopardstown in the wake of subsequent G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas victor Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) prior to his close fourth in the Lacken.

“He's got an entry for the Sandy Lane on Saturday, we're taking a look at that,” said Condon. “The ground is soft and the weather is probably going to be something similar to what we're wanting, he will have an entry there but I won't know until later in the week when I've discussed it with everybody.

“I think if he does go there it will be the [G1] Commonwealth Cup next [at Royal Ascot in June]…and he'll have an entry in the [G1] Prix Maurice de Gheest, maybe even the [G1] Prix Jean Prat.

“He'll be campaigned ambitiously, but he's a horse that's very solid and looks to be improving. He turns up, and when they always turn up you always have a chance.
