Rail-Drawn We the People Favored for Belmont Stakes; Derby Winner Rich Strike Third Choice

ELMONT, NY — With GI Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike (Keen Ice) breaking from post four, a field of eight was drawn Tuesday morning for Saturday's GI Belmont S.

The monumental come-from-behind 80-1 Derby upsetter heads to the final leg of the Triple Crown fresh after skipping the GI Preakness S. He has been installed as the third choice on the morning line at odds of 7-2.

“He's doing really good since he's been here, he's training better every day,” trainer Eric Reed, seated alongside owner Richard Dawson, said at Tuesday's well-attended draw from Belmont's Triple Crown Lounge. “I don't think the pace will be nearly as fast. He's still going to drop back, that's just his style of running. Turning for home, if he's close enough, he'll have a real good shot at it.”

The pace of the race is expected to come from the rail-drawn 'TDN Rising Star' We the People (Constitution), a runaway front-running winner in a sloppy renewal of the local prep GIII Peter Pan S. He was given the 2-1 nod on the morning line.

Mo Donegal (Uncle Mo), a rallying fifth in the Derby, was installed as the 5-2 second choice. He will break from post six. Todd Pletcher-trained stablemate Nest (Curlin) takes on the boys following a runner-up effort in the GI Kentucky Oaks.

This story will be updated.

From the rail out, the complete field for the GI Belmont S.:

1-We the People (Constitution) (2-1)

2-Skippylongstocking (Exaggerator) (20-1)

3-Nest (Curlin) (8-1)

4-Rich Strike (Keen Ice) (7-2)

5-Creative Minister (Creative Cause) (6-1)

6-Mo Donegal (Uncle Mo) (5-2)

7-Golden Glider (Ghostzapper) (20-1)

8-Barber Road (Race Day) (10-1)

Tiz The Law Draws 17; Top Three Choices To Break From Outside Posts In Rescheduled Kentucky Derby

Belmont Stakes and Travers winner Tiz the Law will seek Kentucky Derby glory from post 17 of 18 in Saturday's rescheduled Run for the Roses. Trainer Barclay Tagg and owner Sackatoga Stable will be trying for their second win in the Run for the Roses; they first captured the race with New York-bred Funny Cide in 2003.

Veteran oddsmaker Mike Battaglia gave Tiz the Law morning line odds of 3-5, the lowest since 1989. The race's top three choices will all be on the far outside in the new 20-stall starting gate: Honor A. P. in post 16, Tiz the Law in post 17, and Authentic in post 18.

Horses will be entered in the new 20-stall starting gate away from the rail, so the third slot will become post position one.

The full field is as follows:

  1. Finnick the Fierce – Rey Hernandez – Martin Garcia (50-1)
  2. Max Player – Steve Asmussen – Ricardo Santana, Jr. (30-1)
  3. Enforceable – Mark Casse – Adam Beschizza (30-1)

  8. South Bend – Bill Mott – Tyler Gaffalione (50-1)
  9. Mr. Big News – Bret Calhoun – Gabriel Saez (50-1)
  10. Thousand Words – Bob Baffert – Florent Geroux (15-1)
  11. Necker Island – Chris Hartman – Miguel Mena (50-1) *blinkers off
  12. Sole Volante – Patrick Biancone – Luca Panici (30-1)

Tiz The Law Draws Post Eight, Installed As 6-5 Morning Line Favorite For Belmont Stakes

Florida Derby winner Tiz the Law drew post eight of ten for Saturday's Grade 1 Belmont Stakes, the first race of the 2020 Triple Crown season due to rescheduling caused by the global coronavirus pandemic. To be held over a shortened distance of nine furlongs, the Belmont will be run without spectators or owners in attendance.

Trained by Barclay Tagg and ridden by Manny Franco, Tiz the Law was installed as the 6-5 morning line favorite for the Belmont. The Sackatoga Stable-owned colt will be vying to take his connections on another whirlwind trip through the Triple Crown series, echoing their ride with Funny Cide in 2003.

Second choice at odds of 9-2 is Sole Volante, recent allowance winner at Gulfstream Park who will be running off just 10 days rest on Saturday. Trained by Patrick Biancone, the late-running son of Karakontie won the G3 Sam Davis at Tampa earlier this year, and will leave from post position two under jockey Luca Panici.

Unbridled Stakes winner Dr Post comes in as the 5-1 third choice for trainer Todd Pletcher, and will leave the gate from stall nine. Champion jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. will partner the Quality Road colt.

Tap It To Win drew the inside post and will be fourth choice at 6-1 on the morning line. Trained by Mark Casse, the recent allowance winner will get the services of jockey John Velazquez as he takes a major step up in class.

The entire field for the 2020 Belmont Stakes is as follows:

  1. Tap It To Win (Velazquez, Casse) 6-1
  2. Sole Volante (Panici, Biancone) 9-2
  3. Max Player (Rosario, Rice) 15-1
  4. Modernist (Alvarado, Mott) 15-1
  5. Farmington Road (Castellano, Pletcher) 15-1
  6. Fore Left (J. Ortiz, O'Neill) 30-1
  7. Jungle Runner (Gutierrez, Asmussen) 50-1
  8. Tiz the Law (Franco, Tagg) 9-5
  9. Dr Post (I. Ortiz, Pletcher) 5-1
  10. Pneumatic (Santana, Asmussen) 8-1
