Calyx’s Purple Lily A New TDN Rising Star

Sunday's TRM Equine Nutrition Race at Naas looked an intriguing contest, with four winners lined up including one who was Group 1-placed at two. At the end, there was one who was in total command and that was the filly Purple Lily (Ire) (Calyx {GB}–Boca Raton {Ire}, by Approve {Ire}) who flashed distinct Classic potential to earn TDN Rising Star status. Racing for Alan O'Flynn's Zinlo Syndicate, the Paddy Twomey-trained Tatts Ireland Goresbridge Breeze Up sensation had made an instant impression when off the mark in an often-informative Galway maiden in August. On only her second start, the 10-11 favourite was able to master Ballydoyle's G1 Criterium International third Portland (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and the Johnny Murtagh-trained course-and-distance maiden winner Chicago Critic (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) and make light of the testing conditions.
“She's a nice filly and she had wintered well. She has size and scope and is a strong filly. We just gave her the one run after the breeze-ups last year and she was good,” Twomey said. “I like her, the horses have done loads of cantering but they haven't done much fast work. I thought she was a nice filly and when you are taking on a 108-rated colt you are asking them a question and she did it well.”
Content to let the two class colts of the race go on from the outset, Billy Lee asked the question of Purple Lily heading to two out and she responded gamely to subdue them soon after. At the line, she had put three lengths between her and the solid yardstick Portland, with another 4 1/4 lengths back to Chicago Critic in third. “We might look at a Guineas trial here and go for an Irish Guineas,” her trainer added. “I think Newmarket would come at her a bit quick and I think we'll take our time–Billy [Lee] says something like the [G1] Pretty Polly might suit her. Hopefully we have a good year with her.”
Calyx's third TDN Rising Star, including last year's G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. winner Persian Dreamer, Purple Lily is the third foal out of Boca Raton, a half-sister to the G1 Irish Oaks third and G3 Lancashire Oaks runner-up Lady's Secret (Ire) (Alzao). She also has a 2-year-old full-brother to the winner named Cataluyna (Ire) and a yearling filly by Cotai Glory (GB).

Galiway’s Sunway To The Fore In The Criterium International

Maintaining the overseas stranglehold on the G1 Criterium International, Guy Pariente, Thomas Lines and Qatar Racing's Sunway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}–Kensea {Fr}, by Kendargent {Fr}) struck for the David Menuisier stable at Saint-Cloud on Sunday. Putting the pressure on the leader Navy Seal (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) soon after the start, the 4-1 shot bagged the stand's-side fence after the home turn and used that to his advantage as the 4-5 favourite Alcantor (Fr) (New Bay {GB}) loomed on his outside. Engaged in battle with that rival approaching the final furlong, the G2 Champagne S. runner-up asserted in the last 50 metres to win by half a length, with the other Ballydoyle runner Portland (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) 1 3/4 lengths away in third.

“He is improving and handles these [soft] conditions, but he's a beautiful mover and will be okay on faster ground as well,” jockey Oisin Murphy said of the winner, who was extending the dominance of foreign raiders in this mile with the last French-trained winner being Ectot (GB) (Hurricane Run {Ire}) in 2013. “He was very relaxed and perfect today. David thought he was very good from early on.”

Impressive on his Sandown debut over seven furlongs in June, Sunway was one of a quintet who suffered defeat behind the subsequent G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere hero Rosallion (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}) in Ascot's Listed Pat Eddery S. on King George day who have since captured a significant black-type race. He had Rosallion behind when second to Iberian (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) again over seven in the Champagne at Doncaster last month and as a full-brother to the G1 Champion S. hero Sealiway (Fr) was always going to relish this extra trip.

Menuisier said, “Oisin rode him at home in a canter in May and he was gobsmacked–he said 'that's the best 2-year-old I've ridden all year' and he wasn't even working at that point. He won really well first time out and came out of Ascot lame, so we have to draw a line through that and the form of the Champagne Stakes was amazing. We felt that he had improved as well, so we were quietly confident. He managed to grab the rail, which I think made the difference. Why not the [G1] Poule d'Essai [des Poulains]?–he will have to be entered everywhere.”

Pedigree Notes
As mentioned above, Sunway is a full-brother to Sealiway, who aside from his Ascot heroics also captured the G1 Prix Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere and was second in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club. The listed-winning dam, who has a yearling full-sister to the pair, has a 3×4 inbreeding to Kendargent's sire Kenmare (Fr). Other members of the family are the G2 Prix de Mallert scorer Another Dancer (Groom Dancer) and the G3 Park Express S. winner Pollen (Ire) Orpen).

Wednesday’s Observations: Warm Heart’s Brother Debuts at Tipperary

18.10 Tipperary, Cond, €18,000, 2yo, 7f 100yT
BREMEN (IRE) (Galileo {Ire}) is one of three newcomers in this Glenvale Stud Race, with Donnacha O'Brien happy to pitch him in against Vincent Gaul's impressive Roscommon maiden winner Spanish Flame (Ire) (Phoenix Of Spain {Ire}) and Ballydoyle's Curragh third Portland (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), a son of the G2 Debutante S.-placed Zagitova (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Bremen, the sixth foul out of the triple Australian group 1 heroine Sea Siren (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), is a full-brother to last month's G2 Ribblesdale S. winner Warm Heart (Ire) so might need more time to be seen to best effect.

HOW THEY FARED
7.50 Roscommon, Listed, €40,000, 3yo/up, 11f 154yT
Espionage (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the son of the G2 Ribblesdale S. winner Even Song (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) who was second in the G1 Criterium International in October, was not flashy in this winning return but could turn out one of Ballydoyle's St Leger prospects now he is back on track.
