First Foal for Aurelius Maximus

The first reported foal by GSP Aurelius Maximus (Pioneerof the Nile-La Reina, by A.P. Indy) was born Feb. 10 at Hebert Farms in Maurice, LA. The dark bay filly was produced by the Pomeroy mare, Platinum Patty, owned by William Meaux. Platinum Patty, a $100,000 Texas 2-yr-old sale purchase, won a first asking during her juvenile season. The Aurelius Maximus filly is her second foal.

“We are really excited about Aurelius Maximus's first foal. And, we are extremely excited about 'Aurelius'. He's been nothing but class in the breeding shed and the response to him has been outstanding,” said Nathan Granger, who co-owns the stallion with Stonestreet Stables, Bolton, and Leidel.

Bred in Kentucky by Martell Bloodstock and Fifth Avenue Bloodstock out of Le Reina, Aurelius Maximus raced in the Stonestreet Stables silks to a 3-1-1 record from eight lifetime starts before retiring with earnings of $217,114. A close second in the 2020 GII Fayette S at Keenland, the sire stands the 2022 season for $2,000 live foal at Adcock's Red River Farm in Coushatta, LA.

Chirinos Guides Canoodling To $47.40 Megahertz Upset

Fifth on dirt going seven furlongs on opening day, Dec. 26, the Mike Puype-trained Canoodling was able to set slow fractions and steal Saturday's Grade 3, $100,000 Megahertz Stakes at Santa Anita, as she held Con to win by half a length while getting one mile on turf in 1:37.30 under New Mexico-based Roimes Chirinos, who notched his first-ever win and graded stakes win at The Great Race Place.

Off at 22-1 in a field of seven older fillies and mares, Canoodling broke from the far outside and seemed to relish the change in surface and stretch out.

“There wasn't much speed in this race, but her pedigree is set right to do this today, she's by Pioneerof the Nile,” said Puype, who saddled Canoodling to a fifth place finish in the Grade 1 La Brea Stakes on Dec. 26. “We felt she could route on the turf. Todd Fincher (New Mexico-based trainer) had left her with me and this is where he wanted to run right after that last race and I just got her ready the best we could.

“The jock did a good job. He nursed the fractions along good and we had no pace pressure. The fractions were slow and when they came to get her, she had plenty left.”

A winner of one of four races on turf, Canoodling paid $47.40, $12.40 and $5.80.

“What a great day for me,” said Chirinos, a 38-year-old native of Venezuela. “It's my first graded stakes win in this beautiful country and at Santa Anita. It is unbelievable. She's a tiny, little filly but she's got a really, really big heart and she always tries hard. Today they made it easy for me because they let me walk the first half and I thought wow, if they let me go like this, they will never pass me.”

Owned by Lori Owens' B-4 Farms, Canoodling, a 4-year-old filly by Pioneerof the Nile out of the Harlan's Holiday mare Miz Kella, notched her third stakes win and improved her overall mark to 14-7-1-2. With the winner's share of $60,000, she increased her earnings to $278,023.

The 8-5 favorite, Warren's Showtime lacked room at the rail heading into the far turn and again in deep stretch and finished second in a huge effort. Ridden by Juan Hernandez, she paid $3.40 and $2.80 while finishing a game nose better than Avenue de France.

Ridden by Drayden Van Dyke, French-bred Avenue de France rallied from last to finish third by a head over second choice Bodhicitta. Off at 24-1, Avenue de France paid $5.40 to show.

Fractions on the race, all set by the winner, were 25.30, 49.87, 1:14.51 and 1:25.87.

Thousand Words Sires First Foal

Spendthrift Farm's Thousand Words (Pioneerof the Nile), the undefeated Grade II winner at two and multiple stakes winner at three, sired his first reported foal on Tuesday when a filly was born at Bison Ridge Equine in Bartlesville, OK.

Bred by Hidden Creek Farm, the chestnut filly is the first foal out of the Laoban mare Laoban Furen, whose dam is the stakes-winning and stakes-producing Malibu Moon mare Hung the Moon. Laoban Furen is a half-sister to Brill (Medaglia d'Oro), a million-dollar, sale-topping yearling and Santa Anita stakes winner.

“She's a really nice foal out of a maiden mare that is from a good family. This is a classy-looking filly and very correct,” said Scott Pierce, owner of Hidden Creek Farm.

Thousand Words, a $1-million KEESEP yearling, retired to Spendthrift, where he bred 184 mares in his first book in 2021. He is set to stand his second season at stud for a fee of $7,500 S&N.

Pricey Pioneerof the Nile Filly Scores Second Out at Gulfstream

3rd-Gulfstream, $53,000, Msw, 1-9, 3yo, f, 1m, 1:36.64, ft, 3 3/4 lengths.
FAVOR (f, 3, Pioneerof the Nile–Fame and Fortune, by Unbridled's Song) was a well-beaten fourth as the 3-2 favorite when running into 'TDN Rising Star' Send for Me (Into Mischief) on career debut at Aqueduct Nov. 27. With that experience under her belt and getting more ground to work with here, the $500,000 Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase graduate was antsy at the start, but broke well enough to cross over in front of the pack and clear Story Hour (Creative Cause), whose rider lost the irons early into the running. Clearing the chute in third on the outside, Favor was content to track a loose frontrunner up the backstretch, but soon found herself under pressure as Lakota Spirit (Curlin) snuck up to claim the rail spot. Shaken up for a run, the flashy filly hit the top of the stretch almost five wide and continued to wander in the lane, but crossed the wire 3 3/4 lengths in front of Lakota Spirit. Out of the full-sister to GISW Cross Traffic, Favor is her dam's first winner, and is a half to two by Uncle Mo–a 2-year-old colt and a yearling filly. Fame and Fortune was sent to Laoban for 2022. Sales history: $500,000 Ylg '20 FTKSEL. Lifetime Record: 2-1-0-0, $36,600. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.
