Friday’s Stronach 5 An All-Turf Wager Across Four Tracks

It is all about the turf in Friday's Stronach 5, as the popular wager with an industry-low 12-percent takeout has all five races from Pimlico Race Course, Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita Park and Golden Gate Fields scheduled on the turf.

Post time for the Stronach 5 is 4:15 ET, and will begin with Pimlico's eighth race, a 1 1/8-mile turf event for $25,000 maiden claimers.

The first leg of the sequence is a wide-open affair with a 4-1 morning-line favorite in Tipyourhattothat. A 3-year-old by Congrats, the Robert Bailes-trained gelding has three seconds and two fourths from six career starts and drops from a waiver maiden claimer. Pathway to Victory tries the turf for the first time for trainer Michael Trombetta after showing some speed on an off-track last time out. Michael Matz saddled Fog Bound, 10th in his debut April 21.

Gulfstream's sixth race, a five-furlong, $35,000 claiming turf event for fillies and mares, is next with a 7-5 favorite Missing Link, who goes out for his fourth consecutive victory at the distance and surface for trainer David Fawkes. If the race comes off the turf, the 7-5 choice is Royal Habibi, claimed last out from Saffie Joseph Jr. by Jorge Delgado, who is 30-percent off the claim.

The Stronach 5 heads west for legs three and four. Santa Anita's third race, a maiden special weight event for California bred or sired fillies and mares at a mile on the turf, drew a field of six and a 6-5 favorite in Sunshine Babe, coming off a second-place finish May 9 at the distance and surface. So Very Smart tries the turf for the first time in three starts after being claimed last out by Doug O'Neill, who is 20-percent off the claim.

Golden Gate's third race serves as the fourth leg of the Stronach 5. The mile event for $20,000 maiden claimers is wide-open with Drasario (5-2), Summer Fun (3-1), Balius ($-1) Pogo (7-2) and Wild Wager (5-1) all capable of winding up in the winner's circle.

The Stronach 5 concludes at Gulfstream with another five-furlong turf event for allowance optional claimers. The field of eight includes Halcyon Digest (5-2), steadied when finished third last time out, and Todaystheday (3-1), a winner last time out against similar.

The minimum wager on the multi-race, multi-track Stronach 5 is $1. If there are no tickets with five winners, the entire pool will be carried over to the next Friday.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.

The Maryland Jockey Club serves as host of the Stronach 5.

Quality Runs Deep Among Shine Again Nominations At Pimlico

Graded-stakes winners Hibiscus Punch, Pacific Gale and Victim of Love, 11-time stakes winner Anna's Bandit and Chub Wagon, undefeated through six starts, top 19 horses nominated to the $100,000 Shine Again at historic Pimilco Race Course in Baltimore, Md.

The Shine Again for fillies and mares 3 and up is one of five stakes worth $475,000 in purses Sunday, June 13, that drew a total of 117 nominations. The six-furlong Shine Again is the only stakes both scheduled for the main track and as part of the Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred Championship (MATCH) Series.

No Guts No Glory Farm homebred Anna's Bandit has yet to make her 7-year-old debut, having gone unraced since finishing third in the Dashing Beauty last July at Delaware Park. The Great Notion mare owns 17 career wins and more than $780,000 in purse earnings.

Edward Seltzer and Beverly Anderson's Hibiscus Punch became a stakes winner with her 41-1 upset of the Runhappy Barbara Fritchie (G3) Feb. 20 at Laurel Park, finishing fifth last out in the Derby City Distaff (G1) May 1. Tommy Town Thoroughbreds' Victim of Love, winner of the What a Summer last January at Laurel, defended her 2020 victory in the Vagrancy (G3) May 8 at Belmont Park over fellow Shine Again nominee Sadie Lady.

Third in the Vagrancy, Holly Hill Stables' Pacific Gale won the seven-furlong Inside Information (G2) and 6 ½-furlong Hurricane Bertie (G3) over the winter at Gulfstream Park for trainer John Kimmel. Daniel Lopez and George Chestnut's Chub Wagon kept her perfect record intact with a popular two-length triumph in the six-furlong Skipat May 15 at Pimlico on the Preakness (G1) undercard.

Also prominent among nominees are Maryland-based multiple stakes winners Dontletsweetfoolya, Hello Beautiful and Never Enough Time as well as Rising Seas, second May 22 in the Winning Colors (G3).

The four remaining June 13 stakes are all scheduled for the grass, including the $100,000 Prince George's County for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles and $100,00 Searching for fillies and mares 3 and up going 1 ½ miles.

Three of the top four finishers from the Dinner Party (G2) May 15 at Pimlico are among the 26 Prince George's County nominees – Talk Or Listen, Midnight Tea Time and 2020 Saranac (G3) winner Bye Bye Melvin, who respectively ran second, third and fourth. Also nominated are Corelli and Grade 2 winner Pixelate, separated by a nose in the 1 1/16-mile Henry S. Clark April 24 at Pimlico; 2019 Kent (G3) winner Eons; stakes winners Alwaysmining, Clubman, Doc Boy, English Bee and Logical Myth, third in the March 20 Muniz Memorial (G2); and 2020 Maryland Million Turf runner-up Cannon's Roar.

Among 19 nominees to the Searching are 2020 Dowager (G3) winner Blame Debbie; Crystalle, winner of the P.G. Johnson and second in the Miss Grillo (G2) in 2019; Judi Blue Eyes, a winner of two straight since being put back on grass by leading trainer Claudio Gonzalez; 2020 Long Island (G3) winner Mutamakina and Christophe Clement-trained stablemate Sorrel, third in the Gulfstream's March 27 Orchid (G3); Sister Hanan, third in the $125,000 The Very One (G3) Feb. 27 at Gulfstream; and stakes winners Luck Money and Thankful.

Sprinters 3 and up will go five furlongs in the $100,000 Stormy Blues for females and $100,000 Ben's Cat. The Stormy Blues attracted nominations from Soaring Softly (G3) winner Bye Bye; stakes winners Amanzi Yimpilo and Wesley Ward-trained stablemate Wink; Door Buster, Farsighted, Illegal Smile, Prodigy Doll and Tobys Heart. Also nominated is Lucky 7 Stables' six-time stakes winner Street Lute, yet to race on turf.

Most popular among horsemen, the Ben's Cat's 27 nominees include 2020 Futurity (G3) runner-up After Five; Eastern Bay, a stakes winner and runner-up in the 2020 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash (G3) on dirt that also owns two wins from six grass starts; multiple stakes-winning Maryland-bred Fiya; Hemp, third in the Chick Lang (G3) on dirt May 15 at Pimlico; 2019 Ben's Cat winner Oldies But Goodies; So Street, winner of the 2019 Howard County on the Laurel turf; and multiple dirt stakes winner Whereshetoldmetogo.

Pimlico’s Memorial Day Program Features $833,252 Rainbow 6 Jackpot

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 went unsolved Sunday at Pimlico Race Course, raising the Maryland state record jackpot carryover to $833,252.12 for Monday's special eight-race program.

First race post time is 12:40 p.m.

Maryland Jockey Club host and handicapper Tim Tullock has a best bet and longshot for the sequence:

The Rainbow 6 begins with the third race, a claiming event at six furlongs for 3-year-olds and up, and leading trainer Claudio Gonzalez will send out the 9-5 favorite in Super C Racing Inc.'s Company Clown. The 4-year-old, who won last time out, gets the services once again of jockey Victor Carrasco.

The fourth race features 3-year-old maidens at a mile on the turf. Gold Square LLC's Momza is a tepid 3-1 choice for trainer Kelly Breen. Flight Map goes out for trainer Kelly Rubley while Shug McGaughey will send out Corrado. A maiden claimer for 3-year-old fillies at six furlongs makes up the fifth race and Ronomes is a strong 7-5 favorite off a pair of second place finishes for trainer Robert Vukelic.

The sixth race, scheduled at five furlongs on the turf for Maryland-bred or sired fillies and mares, is a wide-open event with R. Larry Johnson's homebred Spun Glass a 3-1 favorite. Sick Pack Sara, entered for the main track only, would be seeking her fourth consecutive victory if the race is taken off the turf.

Shane's Jewel is a 7-5 favorite in the seventh race, a 1 1/16-mile allowance optional claiming event for 3-year-olds and up. Non Stop Stable's Tappin Cat gets a return trip to Pimlico with jockey Sheldon Russell after a fifth-place finish last time out. The Rainbow 6 ends with the eighth race, a mile claiming event on the turf for fillies and mares, drew a field of 10 including Bellsinthewood, making her second start in the U.S. and first since October of 2019.

Pimlico: Record $783,267 Rainbow 6 Jackpot Sunday After Near Miss

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 went unsolved Saturday at historic Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md., raising the Maryland state record jackpot carryover to $783,267.38 for Sunday's eight-race program.

First race post time is 12:40 p.m.

Aktham finished second as the only horse live to take down the jackpot heading into Saturday's ninth-race finale, won by Maine ($6.60). A total of $113,073 was bet into the popular multi-race wager, which began with a carryover of $747,098.73 from Friday. Multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $27,126.48.

The Rainbow 6 jackpot is paid out only when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 60 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners while 40 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Introduced in Maryland April 2, 2015 on opening day of Pimlico's spring meet, the Rainbow 6 had its previous state record carryover reach $345,898.33 spanning 31 racing programs before being solved by one lucky bettor for a life-changing $399,545.94 payout April 15, 2018 at Laurel Park. The winning ticket was purchased through Maine off-track betting.

Sunday's Rainbow 6 begins in Race 3, a maiden claimer for horses 3, 4 and 5 scheduled for 1 1/16 miles on the grass. Fermat, second on the also-eligible list, is the 9-5 program favorite with Pat's Factor, beaten a head last out on the Pimlico turf May 13, second at 5-2 from Post 2.

Race 7 is a starter-optional claimer for 3-year-old and up scheduled for one mile on the grass that drew a field of 10 including Bahama Channel for main track only. The group includes Laddie Liam, making just his third start since winning the 2019 Maryland Juvenile Futurity, and Claudio Gonzalez-trained King Bubble, the 3-1 morning-line favorite racing first time off a $12,500 claim May 2 at Pimlico.

There will also be a carryover of $3,886.57 in the $1 Super Hi-5 for Sunday's opener.

Following Sunday, Pimlico will host a special Memorial Day holiday program Monday, May 31.
