Stronach 5 Returns Friday With Racing From Pimlico, Santa Anita, Gulfstream

The Stronach 5 returns Friday with two competitive maiden races and two turf races with full fields from Pimlico and Santa Anita.

The popular wager, cancelled last week when rainstorms forced racing at Pimlico to be called off after the second race, begins Friday at 3:45 ET with Pimlico's seventh race, a 1 1/16 mile claiming race on the turf from for 3-year-olds and up.

Making his first start since February of 2020 will be Rohrbacher (7-2). The 5-year-old gelding finished third at Charles Town in his only start after being claimed by trainer High McMahon in December of 2019. Gunslinger (4-1), who finished third May 28 in his first start since February of 2020, will go out for Mary Eppler. Lucky Ramsey (10-1) drops in class for trainer Kieron Magee.

The second leg of the Stronach 5, Gulfstream's fifth race, features Florida-bred 2-year-olds going five furlongs. Forever Souper (5-2) goes out for trainer Mark Casse, who has won five juvenile races out of seven this meet. Risk Vs Reward (10-1), a son of Practical Joke, goes out for Carlos David while Arindel sends out their homebred Clapton (5-1).

Pimlico's eighth race, a 5 ½ furlong maiden event for 3-to-5-year-old maidens, has a 4-5 favorite in Golden G, coming off a second-place finish for leading trainer Claudio Gonzalez. Little Sir John makes his second start after a sixth-place finish at Charles Town May 15 for trainer John Robb.

Santa Anita will play host to the final two legs of the Stronach 5. Santa Anita's second race, a $20,000 claimer for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 mile, has an 8-5 favorite in Summer Rose, beaten just a length last out against similar company. Trainer Phil D'Amato saddles. Circle of Honor (3-1) finished third last out but 10 lengths behind Summer Rose after hopping at the start.

The Stronach 5 concludes with Santa Anita's third race, a maiden special weight event at 1 1/16 mile on the turf for California bred or sired 3-year-olds. Really Big News (7-2), second while sprinting on the turf in his debut May 23, is a slight favorite over a couple others including Wilder Than Most, making his second career start and first since finishing second sprinting on the main track at Del Mar back in August of 2019. Auspicious Style, fifth in his debut in April at Santa Anita, goes out as a first-time gelding and with first-time blinkers for Dan Blacker.

The minimum wager on the multi-race, multi-track Stronach 5 is $1. If there are no tickets with five winners, the entire pool will be carried over to the next Friday.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.

The Maryland Jockey Club serves as host of the Stronach 5.

Report: Stronach Group Fielding Interest In Several Assets

Bloomberg reported Tuesday that the racing and media company the Stronach Group is “exploring options for parts of its portfolio after fielding interest from special purpose acquisition companies and other suitors,” according to unnamed sources.

No specific assets were listed to be under consideration.

The company's portfolio, estimated to be worth $1.5 billion, includes six racetracks in the U.S. (Santa Anita, Gulfstream, Pimlico, Laurel, Golden Gate, and Rosecroft Raceway), multiple training centers, wagering platform Xpressbet, tote company AmTote, a racetrack in Austria, and other real estate holdings. It also co-owns TrackNet Media, a horse racing content provider, with Churchill Downs.

Founded by Canadian Frank Stronach, the Stronach Group's racing and gaming businesses are now operated by his daughter Belinda Stronach following a public court battle, which ended last year.

EDIE MEENY MINY MO (f, 3, Upstart–Plum {SW, $128,440}, by Pure Prize) continued a promising start to her career Sunday at a somewhat surprising 3-1 while sporting blinkers for the first time. A sharp :10 flat breezer at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic last year, the dark bay debuted a 4 1/4-length winner in a waiver maiden claimer (not in for the tag as the race condition is effectively a state-bred maiden special weight plus open $40,000 maiden claimer) here Apr. 23, and was flattered when two also-rans from that heat came back to graduate and two more ran second. With the money pouring in on Liv and Let Liv (Khozan), a big-figure last-out winner at the level, Edie Meeny Miny Mo was pushed along up the inside before getting shuffled back into the turn. She made a nifty move along with the chalk as those two took over approaching the stretch, but made quick work of her more fancied rival to romp impressively. Tukker, Gilbert Handicap Sunday’s Record Rainbow 6 Jackpot At Pimlico

With the Maryland state record 20-cent Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot having surpassed the $1 million mark for Sunday, Maryland Jockey Club host and analyst Naomi Tukker and WBAL-TV sports anchor and reporter Pete Gilbert weighed in with ways to take down the life-changing prize at Pimlico racetrack in Baltimore, Md.

Tukker's “must use” horse in the sequence comes in the Race 5 opener with Richard Sillaman-trained Live and Let Liv. The 3-year-old filly has been worse than third just once from eight career starts, five of them wins, and “ran a career-best 45 days ago at this level, so plenty of time for her to get re-energized and ready to go.”

Race 6, the $75,000 Ben's Cat for Maryland-bred/sired 3-year-olds and up sprinting five furlongs on the turf, is where Tucker's price play comes with 2020 Maryland Million Turf runner-up Cannon's Roar (8-1). “I love that he had a breeze from the gate coming into this, and he has held his own sprinting on the turf.”

Constructed at a cost of $86.40, Gilbert's Rainbow 6 ticket utilizes at least two horses in each leg of the sequence, spreading out to four – undefeated 8-5 favorite Chub Wagon and fellow multiple stakes winners Hello Beautiful, Dontletsweetfoolya and Anna's Bandit – in the $100,000 Shine Again (Race 9).

Gilbert used Matta (9-2) and So Street (4-1) in the $75,000 Ben's Cat (Race 6); Pixelate (3-1), Argonne (8-1) and Midnight Tea Time (8-1) in the $100,000 Prince George's County (Race 8); and long shots Door Buster (30-1) and Proper Attire (20-1) and Malibu Beauty (7-2) in the $100,000 Stormy Blues, the latter entered for main track only.

In non-stakes races, Gilbert used recent Pimlico maiden special weight winner Blushable (8-1); Live and Let Liv (2-1), a five-time winner from eight starts; and Six Pack Sara (8-1), on a two-race win streak, in the opening sequence (Race 5), an optional claiming allowance for 3-year-old fillies sprinting six furlongs.

Race 7 is a six-furlong claiming sprint for maidens 3, 4 and 5 years old where Gilbert has both Snow Job (5-1), unraced since Dec. 9 and trying dirt for the first time after six grass starts, and Harbor Crossing (9-2), a second-time starter from trainer Hugh McMahon.
