Tukker, Gilbert Handicap Sunday’s Record Rainbow 6 Jackpot At Pimlico

With the Maryland state record 20-cent Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot having surpassed the $1 million mark for Sunday, Maryland Jockey Club host and analyst Naomi Tukker and WBAL-TV sports anchor and reporter Pete Gilbert weighed in with ways to take down the life-changing prize at Pimlico racetrack in Baltimore, Md.

Tukker's “must use” horse in the sequence comes in the Race 5 opener with Richard Sillaman-trained Live and Let Liv. The 3-year-old filly has been worse than third just once from eight career starts, five of them wins, and “ran a career-best 45 days ago at this level, so plenty of time for her to get re-energized and ready to go.”

Race 6, the $75,000 Ben's Cat for Maryland-bred/sired 3-year-olds and up sprinting five furlongs on the turf, is where Tucker's price play comes with 2020 Maryland Million Turf runner-up Cannon's Roar (8-1). “I love that he had a breeze from the gate coming into this, and he has held his own sprinting on the turf.”

Constructed at a cost of $86.40, Gilbert's Rainbow 6 ticket utilizes at least two horses in each leg of the sequence, spreading out to four – undefeated 8-5 favorite Chub Wagon and fellow multiple stakes winners Hello Beautiful, Dontletsweetfoolya and Anna's Bandit – in the $100,000 Shine Again (Race 9).

Gilbert used Matta (9-2) and So Street (4-1) in the $75,000 Ben's Cat (Race 6); Pixelate (3-1), Argonne (8-1) and Midnight Tea Time (8-1) in the $100,000 Prince George's County (Race 8); and long shots Door Buster (30-1) and Proper Attire (20-1) and Malibu Beauty (7-2) in the $100,000 Stormy Blues, the latter entered for main track only.

In non-stakes races, Gilbert used recent Pimlico maiden special weight winner Blushable (8-1); Live and Let Liv (2-1), a five-time winner from eight starts; and Six Pack Sara (8-1), on a two-race win streak, in the opening sequence (Race 5), an optional claiming allowance for 3-year-old fillies sprinting six furlongs.

Race 7 is a six-furlong claiming sprint for maidens 3, 4 and 5 years old where Gilbert has both Snow Job (5-1), unraced since Dec. 9 and trying dirt for the first time after six grass starts, and Harbor Crossing (9-2), a second-time starter from trainer Hugh McMahon.

Gilbert's Rainbow 6 Ticket

Race 5: 1, 3, 8

Race 6: 4, 6

Race 7: 5, 8

Race 8: 1, 5, 12

Race 9: 1, 2, 5, 8

Race 10: 4, 5, 6

Pimlico: Five Stakes, $1-Million Rainbow 6 Jackpot Highlight Sunday’s Action

Take one formidable undefeated horse, mix in a bevy of local stars and out-of-town shippers, and add a Maryland state record carryover jackpot in the 20-cent Rainbow 6 of more than $1 million and the result is one spectacular afternoon of racing at historic Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md.

Sunday's 10-race program kicks off at 12:40 p.m. and includes five stakes, four scheduled for the turf, worth $475,000 in purses highlighted by the $100,000 Shine Again for fillies and mares 3 and older sprinting six furlongs on the main track.

The Shine Again, the next race in the 24-stakes Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred Championship (MATCH) Series that runs through Dec. 26, is headed by 4-year-old filly Chub Wagon, winner of the Skipat May 15 at Pimlico on the undercard of the 146th Preakness (G1) to run her perfect record to 6-0. It will be her biggest test yet, facing the likes of Anna's Bandit, Hello Beautiful and Dontletsweetfoolya who have combined for 29 wins, 18 in stakes.

All four remaining stakes are scheduled for the grass led by the $100,000 Prince George's County for 3-year-olds and up going 1 1/8 miles that drew a field of 12 including main-track-only entrant Shane's Jewel and featuring graded-stakes winners English Bee, Eons and Pixelate, the narrow 3-1 program favorite on turf. Graded-stakes placed stablemates Logical Myth and Midnight Tea Time come in from Kentucky to challenge.

New York-based stakes winner Beautiful Lover, twice graded-stakes placed for trainer Chad Brown, is favored at 2-1 on the morning line in the $100,000 Searching at 1 ½ miles for fillies and mares 3 and up. In her first start for trainer Christophe Clement, the 5-year-old mare was fifth by 2 ½ lengths in the 1 1/16-mile Distaff Turf March 28 at Tampa Bay Downs, her first race in more than six months. Her main competition is expected to come from Dowager (G3) winner Blame Debbie and fellow stakes winner Luck Money.

Rounding out the stakes action are a pair of five-furlong sprints – the $100,000 Stormy Blues for 3-year-old fillies and $75,000 Ben's Cat for Maryland-bred/sired 3-year-olds and up. Street Lute, a six-time stakes winner on the dirt, is entered to make her turf debut in the Stormy Blues against the likes of multiple stakes-placed Honey Pants, the 7-2 program favorite, and the pair of Wink and Amanzi Yimpilo from trainer Wesley Ward, currently in England for the upcoming Royal Ascot meet.

So Street is a narrow 4-1 morning-line favorite in the Ben's Cat facing fellow stakes winners Introduced and Air Token and defending champion Oldies But Goodies and 2020 Maryland Million Turf runner-up Cannon's Roar. Hemp, third in the May 15 Chick Lang (G3) at Pimlico, is entered for main track only.

Following Sunday's action, live racing returns to Pimlico Friday, June 18.

Record Rainbow 6 Carryover Tops $1 Million for Stakes-Filled Sunday
The 20-cent Rainbow 6 went unsolved Saturday at historic Pimlico Race Course, growing the Maryland state record carryover jackpot to $1,007,434.44 for Sunday's stakes-filled program.

First race post time is 12:40 p.m.

A total of $102,742 was put into the popular multi-race wager on top of a carryover of $974,564.10 from the last full live program June 6. Friday's card at Pimlico was canceled after two races due to inclement weather. Multiple tickets with all six winners Saturday each returned $9,861.08.

Introduced in Maryland April 2, 2015 on opening day of Pimlico's spring meet, the Rainbow 6 had its previous state record carryover reach $345,898.33 spanning 31 racing programs before being solved by one lucky bettor for a life-changing $399,545.94 payout April 15, 2018 at Laurel Park. The winning ticket was purchased through Maine off-track betting.

Pimlico’s Rainbow 6 Jackpot Closing In On A Million Dollars

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 went unsolved Saturday at historic Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md., causing the Maryland state record carryover jackpot to swell to $938,090.78 for Sunday's program.

Post time for the first of eight races is 12:40 p.m.

Jesus Suarez's 30-1 long shot Quick Enough was the lone horse live to take down the jackpot heading into Saturday's eighth race finale, won by Fizbo ($12.60). A total of $70,751 was put into the popular multi-race wager on top of a carryover of $915,457.43 from Friday. Multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $870.50.

The Rainbow 6 jackpot is paid out only when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 60 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners while 40 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Sunday's Rainbow 6 begins in Race 3, a starter-optional claimer for fillies and mares 3 and up sprinting six furlongs on the main track. Le Weekend, third to multiple stakes winner Hello Beautiful in the Maryland Million Distaff last fall at Laurel Park, is the 9-5 program favorite from the rail in a field of six for trainer Jamie Ness.

Air Token, winner of the seven-furlong Concern Stakes last November at Laurel, will attempt to snap a five-race winless streak in Race 6, an entry-level allowance for 3-year-olds and up going 1 1/16 miles. Ness counters with the entry of last-out winner Halite and Lucky Britches, making just his second start in nearly 12 months.

Race 7 is an open entry-level allowance for 3-year-olds and up sprinting six furlongs featuring the season debut for 4-year-old gelding Artistic Reason, a half-brother to 2020 Runhappy Barbara Fritchie (G3) winner Majestic Reason. Trained by Graham Motion, Artistic Reason was entered in a similar spot against fellow Maryland-bred/sired horses May 29 but scratched when Pimlico's main track came up sloppy. Racing for the first time as a gelding, Artistic Reason was most recently second by a length in a restricted 1 1/16-mile allowance last August at Laurel.

Notes: Five-pound apprentice Charlie Marquez added to his lead atop the extended Preakness Meet at Pimlico standings with a Saturday hat trick, finishing first aboard Gins N Tins ($12.40) in Race 2, Americas Woman ($6.20) in Race 3 and Mavilus ($9) in Race 5. Jockey J.D. Acosta doubled with Lake Chicot ($3.80) in Race 1 and Vegas Weekend ($3.80) in Race 7. Marquez and Acosta rank 1-2 with 25 and 20 wins, respectively.
