First Euro Group 1 For American Pharoah As Van Gogh Strikes

A fortnight after Harvey’s Lil Goil provided American Pharoah with a first top-level triumph as a sire in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup, there was another landmark in his remarkable story as Van Gogh supplied him with a first in that grade in Europe in Saturday’s Criterium International at Saint-Cloud. Highly tried by Aidan O’Brien this term, the son of the G1 Epsom Oaks heroine Imagine (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells) had been second in Leopardstown’s G3 Tyros S. and G2 Champions Juvenile S. and in the Oct. 10 G3 Autumn S. at Newmarket and traded at what in hindsight appears generous-looking odds of 18-5. Anchored in rear early by Pierre-Charles Boudot, the bay was delivered on the hedge in the home straight to overtake all rivals and assume command with 300 metres remaining. Drawing away from there, he had enough in the tank to jink near the line and had four lengths to spare there over the long-time leader Normandy Bridge (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}), with the 17-10 favourite Jadoomi (Fr) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) a neck away in third. “This horse was very impressive and gave me a very good feel,” commented the unstoppable “PCB” as he racked up another big-race double. “Aidan called me before the race and said it was important to get a good trip and get him cover, but he was still a bit keen early on. I made my move along the rail, which is always a big help here and he showed a very nice turn of foot. He was a bit tricky and green in front and was looking around, so he can only improve and has run on all grounds so the signs are positive for next year.”

Introduced over seven furlongs at Leopardstown July 11, Van Gogh who is the 12th foal out of the operation’s 2001 G1 Irish 1000 Guineas and G1 Epsom Oaks heroine was fourth behind Khalid Abdullah’s Masen (GB) (Kingman {GB}) but turned that form around next time in the course-and-distance Tyros Aug. 6. Second to his stablemate Military Style (War Front) there as Masen was back in third, the Ballydoyle blueblood was below-par next time when sixth in The Curragh’s G2 Futurity S. Aug. 22 but rebounded back at Leopardstown when runner-up to Cadillac (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) on his first try at this trip in the prime juvenile contest on Irish Champions Day Sept. 12. Making most to get off the mark in a seven-furlong Curragh maiden Sept. 27, he was out again for Newmarket’s Autumn S. on the “Future Champions Day” but was no match for Godolphin’s authoritative One Ruler (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in that Oct. 10 contest. Minutes prior to that contemporary finishing a game runner-up in the G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy, Van Gogh was putting himself in an aptly priceless bracket in the Saint-Cloud mud with arguably the day’s most impressive display.

The Oct. 2 G3 Prix Thomas Bryon scorer Normandy Bridge, who looked set to be swamped in midstraight having over-raced in front only to rally and get back up for second, is a work in progress according to trainer Stephanie Nigge. “He didn’t have an ideal race, as we would have preferred cover but that’s the way it is,” she said. “I thought he’d finish fourth or fifth at one point, but he is very courageous and kept finding which is a very good sign. I feel he is very immature and there is quite a lot of work to do over the winter. He’s a nice prospect for next season.”

Imagine’s previous best was the ill-fated G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere and G2 Futurity S. hero Horatio Nelson (Ire) (Danehill), but she had also thrown the G2 Rockfel S. winner Kitty Matcham (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}), the G2 Al Fahidi Fort winner Viscount Nelson (Giant’s Causeway) and his GIII Longacres Mile-winning full-brother Point Piper. Imagine is of regal blood herself, with the full-sister to the Listed Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial winner and G1 Irish 1000 Guineas runner-up Strawberry Roan (Ire) a half to the brilliant G1 Epsom and Irish Derby and G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S. hero and sire Generous (Ire) (Caerleon) and to the G3 Park S. and GIII Monrovia H. scorer Wedding Bouquet (Ire) (Kings Lake). The latter is in turn the second dam of the six-times group 1 heroine Moonlight Cloud (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), with this being the dam line of the excellent racemare and blue hen Margarethen (Tulyar {Ire}). It is fitting that one of Aidan O’Brien’s earliest stars during his tenure at Ballydoyle should be responsible for American Pharoah’s breakthrough moment in Europe and fitting also that one of this stable’s runners made the breakthrough such has been Coolmore’s support for the Triple Crown hero. Imagine’s as-yet unnamed yearling is a full-sister to Van Gogh.

QEII Glory For Dubawi’s The Revenant

On a day when only the fittest survived, the suitably dramatically-titled The Revenant (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) as expected made light of Ascot’s very testing ground to take the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. for France. Like the G1 QIPCO Champion S. hero Addeybb (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) runner-up in his respective race 12 months ago, Al Asayl France’s chestnut had a proven love of these conditions in his armoury as well as freshness having only re-appeared this season a fortnight previously when winning the G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein at ParisLongchamp. Sent off the 5-1 second favourite to go one better than in 2019, he was always in his comfort zone tracking the moderate early pace set by the 28-1 shot Roseman (Ire) (Kingman {GB}). Tackling that outsider inside the final two furlongs, he had edged ahead a furlong from home and answered Pierre-Charles Boudot’s every call to gain a head verdict, with 3 1/4 lengths back to the 8-11 favourite Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}) in third. “Today I was very confident and he did it well on the track,” commented France’s revelation ‘PCB’. “He was very relaxed and when I asked him he gave me a nice, long turn of foot and was courageous. He’s a super-tough horse.”

This was the one race on the card that played host to a potential superstar in the unbeaten Palace Pier and although he performed with credit on going that played against him, he was another in a line of John Gosden stars who failed to show their true colours in specialist ground. He made his move down the outer from rear under Dettori to threaten The Revenant, but was unable to keep tabs on the 5-year-old who had only the leader Roseman to worry about late on. Nothing got into contention from behind and it was ultimately left to The Revenant to make it a clean sweep for geldings in the day’s feature races open to them.

Trainer Francis Henri Graffard, whose 2020 has been highly profitable thanks to this stable stalwart, the filly Watch Me (Fr) (Olympic Glory {Ire}), sprinter Wooded (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) and 3-year-old middle-distance performer In Swoop (Ire) (Adlerflug {Ger}), deserves all the credit available in nurturing the former Hugo Palmer trainee as Haggas has with Addeybb. Three-from-four as a 3-year-old, he was gelded and returned to reward that decision by annexing Saint-Cloud’s Listed Prix Altipan and G3 Prix Edmond Blanc last Spring. Brought here after subsequent wins in the G2 Badener Meile and last year’s renewal of the Daniel Wildenstein, he found only King of Change (GB) (Farhh {GB}) too strong here and his subsequent absence until Arc Saturday was due to COVID-19 wiping out the early part of the calendar.

“I had him ready to run in the Spring, but when lockdown came I decided to send him out to grass and he had a good spell,” Graffard explained. “I had to wait until the Daniel Wildenstein for his comeback and he was only 80 per-cent fit for that race. I was a little bit stressed that I had to work him quite hard in the run-up, but everything was building to today. It all worked out because he is a very good horse with a lot of heart. It went exactly as we had planned, with him settled close to the pace.”

Gosden said of Palace Pier, “He pulled off a shoe leaving the gate. He was trying to run the whole race with one shoe off and Frankie said he was not able to change leads and the horse wasn’t able to handle the ground.”

The Revenant is the second foal out of Hazel Lavery (Ire) (Excellent Art {GB}), whose career sign-off came with a defeat of the eventual G1 Champion S. hero Noble Mission (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) on heavy ground in the G3 St Simon S. A half-sister to the Listed Premio Terme di Merano winner and G3 St Leger Italiano and G3 Give Thanks S. runner-up Leo Gali (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), she is a granddaughter of Rapid Repeat (Ire) (Exactly Sharp) who is kin to the G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial S.-winning sire Artema (Ire) (Common Grounds {GB}) and the stakes winner Hello Soso (Ire) (Alzao) who was also third in the GII Diana H. Hazel Lavery’s unraced 2-year-old filly by Oasis Dream (GB) is named La Viette (GB), while her 2020 foal is a daughter of Saxon Warrior (Jpn).

Third Foret For Fastnet Rock’s One Master

Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) may have come up short in her history bid on Sunday, but ParisLongchamp was still able to host a ground-breaking mare as One Master (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) brought up an unprecedented third victory in the G1 Qatar Prix de la Foret. Covered up early by Pierre-Charles Boudot as Godolphin’s 7-5 favourite Earthlight (Ire) (Shamardal) took the bull by the horns after the first two furlongs, the 29-10 second favourite was launched a furlong out to reel in that rival in a frantic final 50 metres and register the landmark win by a short-neck as Safe Voyage (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire}) made it three seven-furlongs specialists in a line a short head behind in third. “She’s a fantastic filly and comes good over this track and trip,” trainer William Haggas said. “She was given another brilliant ride from Pierre-Charles and wants to win. She had to battle it out today, but she did it. The last horse to win two Forets was Moorestyle (GB), who was ridden by Maureen’s father and trained by her uncle, so this is very unique and I suspect it’ll take some beating. It’s a shame that the other mare couldn’t make it three on the day, but this is a good feat in itself. She looks after herself and we haven’t over-raced her and when you do that they repay you.”

First brought here in 2018 as a 33-1 shot, One Master had stall 15 to overcome on ground a touch livelier than she likes but in the early days of “PC” she was smuggled by another Godolphin runner in Inns of Court (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) to edge a short-head verdict. A year on, the bay had a kinder draw and the very soft ground she thrives on and was the relatively comfortable winner from City Light (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), having placed in the G1 Queen Anne S. and G1 Falmouth S. over a mile during the summer. Turned to six-furlong sprinting thereafter, she was second in the G1 Qipco British Champions Sprint S. at Ascot and sixth on her seasonal bow in the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. back there June 20 before heading back over further.

Arguably unlucky when beaten less than a length by Nazeef (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) when fourth under Boudot in the latest edition of the Falmouth July 10, the homebred was paired with Tom Marquand for her next three outings over this trip and got their partnership off to a flyer when defying a penalty with another of her late shows in Goodwood’s G3 Oak Tree S. July 31. Left behind by Safe Voyage when 3 1/2-lengths second to that rival in the Aug. 22 G2 City of York S., she was beaten in a bobbing finish by Wichita (Ire) (No Nay Never) in Doncaster’s G2 Park S. Sept. 12 but this was the day that mattered and she was produced brilliantly to pull off the rare achievement.

Again played late, it was her burst between the 300 and 100-metre mark that made the difference as Safe Voyage took time to wind up and Earthlight possibly paying for having to use up energy to get across from his wide draw and on to the lead. “She is very laid-back and easy to deal with and she knows how to race. I don’t know what it is about this time of year, but she seems to come good and we haven’t missed a beat this year. She’s run in every race we’ve wanted her to and I’m thrilled for everyone here. She’ll have another run, I suppose, if she’s okay and she’s in both races at Ascot over six and a mile and I quite fancy the Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland as she’s pretty nippy. I’ll have to speak to Roy and Gretchen, but I’m absolutely thrilled for them as they have been fantastic supporters of ours and they said straight after last year ‘let’s have another season in training’ so good for them.”

Godolphin’s Lisa-Jane Graffard said of the runner-up, who almost held off the mare in a pulsating finish. “Earthlight has run a super race. He was in such good form–you could see in the paddock that he was really happy to be at the races–and was almost a bit too well in himself. Mickael said that no-one else wanted to go on, so he found himself in front which may have cost him slightly in the dying strides. We can’t look for too many excuses, as he has been beaten by a mare who knows her way round Longchamp with her eyes closed. One Master is fantastic and connections have done a great job in bringing her back in peak form again. We are really pleased with Earthlight and Mickael felt that he fought hard all the way to the line.”

One Master’s dam is the smart sprinter Enticing (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), who captured the G3 Molecomb S. at two and Goodwood’s King George S. when it was staged as a group 3. Also the second dam of last year’s G3 Killavullan S. winner Stela Star (Ire) (Epaulette {Aus}) who was also runner-up in this season’s GIII Honeymoon S., she is a daughter of Superstar Leo (Ire) (College Chapel {GB}) who first brought European success to Lael Stable when landing the G2 Flying Childers S. and G2 Norfolk S. and finishing runner-up in the G1 Prix de l’Abbaye here and the G1 Phoenix S. Superstar Leo, whose other notable performer was the Listed Fleur de Lys S. scorer and G3 Jersey S. runner-up Sentaril (GB) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), is kin to Starship (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who produced the G1 Racing Post Trophy hero Rivet (Ire) and the Hong Kong group 3 winner Out and About (Ire) from matings with One Master’s sire Fastnet Rock, as well as the G3 Gallinule S. winner Alexander Pope (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}). This is also the family of the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains third San Donato (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), the G1 Turnbull S. winner December Draw (Ire) (Medecis {GB}) and the Guineas-winning sires Footstepsinthesand (GB) and Power (GB). Wootton Bassett’s Wooded Wins the Abbaye

There as a slow-motion finish to the G1 Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp Longines on Sunday, where Al Shaqab Racing’s 3-year-old Wooded (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) gave his all to prevail in a drawn-out finale. Missing the kick a touch but able to grab the rail under Pierre-Charles Boudot, the 13-2 shot who had captured the six-furlong G3 Prix Texanita at Chantilly May 13 was marginally ahead passing the two-furlong marker. After seeing off his close companion Liberty Beach (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}), the lightly-raced bay hit the line a neck in front of last year’s winner Glass Slippers (GB) (Dream Ahead) as Liberty Beach stayed in the mix to be a short neck away in third. “I have always held him in high esteem and since he won the group 3 nothing has gone right,” winning trainer Francis-Henri Graffard said. “Because of the pandemic, he had to miss Royal Ascot and then I had to run him over the wrong trip and I was running him today for education, as I thought next year would be his year.”

Campaigned solely over seven furlongs as a juvenile, Wooded opened his account at Deauville in August before finishing a short-head runner-up to Kenway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) in the G3 Prix la Rochette here in September and third behind the Charlie Appleby-trained duo King’s Command (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Royal Crusade (GB) (Shamardal) in the G3 Prix Thomas Bryon at Saint-Cloud the following month. After springing back to the fore in the Texanita, he was next seen finishing fourth in the G1 Prix Jean Prat back over seven at Deauville July 12 before running sixth in the 6 1/2-furlong G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest also there Aug. 9. Shortened up for the course-and-distance G3 Prix du Petit Couvert, he was runner-up to Air de Valse (Fr) (Mesnil des Aigles {Fr}) Sept. 13 and made the requisite improvement in the interim to turn that form around.

Graffard added, “I was upset, because I knew he was going to run very well in the Commonwealth Cup and there were no races for him over six furlongs over the summer. We have a nice sprinter on our hands and the only question was the ground. He is much better on fast ground and Pierre-Charles said he wasn’t the same horse on soft, but I wanted to toughen him up for next year. He went on it today because he’s a very good horse.”

Wooded is the second foal out of Frida La Blonde (Fr) (Elusive City), whose first was the talented G3 Sovereign S. runner-up Beat le Bon (Fr) also by Wootton Bassett. The second dam is the Listed Criterium d’Evry winner and G2 Premio Regina Elena (Italian 1000 Guineas) runner-up Firm Friend (Ire) (Affirmed) who also produced the Listed Prix Servanne and Listed Prix Cor de Chasse scorer and G3 Prix de Ris-Orangis runner-up Fred Lalloupet (GB) (Elusive City) and another Prix Servanne winner Mon Pote le Gitan (Thunder Gulch) who was also placed in the G3 Prix de Cabourg. The third dam Cherie Amie (Fr) (Gay Mecene) is connected to the G3 Cornwallis S. and G3 Norfolk S.-winning sire Magic Ring (Ire) who was third in this race.
