Odds And Ends: Cox Second Trainer To Win Four Cup Races, Quartet Of Jockeys, Trainers Have Breakthrough Wins

Brad Cox became the second trainer in the 37-year history of the Breeders' Cup World Championships to train four winners during a single Championships, matching the feat of Richard Mandella in 2003 at Santa Anita.

Cox won the final two races on Future Stars Friday with Aunt Pearl (IRE) in the Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) and the TVG Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (G1) with Essential Quality.

On Saturday, he sent out Knicks Go, who shattered the track record in the Big Ass Fans Dirt Mile (G1), and Monomoy Girl to her second victory in the Longines Distaff (G1).

In 2003, Mandella saddled four Breeders' Cup winners under the single-day format of the Championships conducted from 1984-2006.

Authentic Becomes Sixth Kentucky Derby Winner to Take Classic 
Authentic became the sixth Kentucky Derby winner to capture the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) and fourth to do it in the same year. The other 3-year-olds to win the Classic are Sunday Silence (1989), Unbridled (1990) and American Pharoah (2015). Ferdinand, the 1986 Derby winner, and Alysheba, the 1987 Kentucky Derby winner, both came back the following year to win the Classic as 4-year-olds.                               

Irad Ortiz Jr. Wins Third Consecutive Bill Shoemaker Award
Irad Ortiz Jr., who rode two winners and added a second- and third-place finish, won the 18th annual Bill Shoemaker Award, given to the most outstanding jockey in the 2020 Breeders' Cup World Championships hosted by Keeneland.

Ortiz's victories came on Golden Pal (Juvenile Turf Sprint-G2) and Whitmore (Sprint-G1). He finished second on Improbable in the Classic (G1) and third on Sharp Samurai in the Big Ass Fans Dirt Mile (G1).

Joel Rosario, Florent Geroux, John Velazquez and Pierre-Charles Boudot also rode two winners.

Rosario, who rode three winners in 2018 at Churchill Downs and two last year at Santa Anita, got his 2020 victories on Vequist (Juvenile Fillies-G1) and Knicks Go (Big Ass Fans Dirt Mile-G1)

Geroux's two victories came on Aunt Pearl (IRE) (Juvenile Fillies Turf-G1) and Monomoy Girl (Longines Distaff-G1). Velasquez won the Longines Classic (G1) on Authentic and the Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) on Gamine. Boudot picked up his first two Breeders' Cup victories on Audarya (FR) in the Maker's Mark Filly & Mare Turf (G1) and the FanDuel Mile presented by PDJF (G1) on Order of Australia (IRE).

Four Jockeys Claim Initial Breeders' Cup Victories 
Four riders posted their first Breeders' Cup victories over the weekend.

Pierre-Charles Boudot, who was riding in his third Breeders' Cup, picked up his first two Breeders' Cup victories on Audarya (FR) in the Maker's Mark Filly & Mare Turf (G1) and the FanDuel Mile presented by PDJF (G1) on Order of Australia (IRE).

Luis Saez, riding in his seventh World Championships, won the TVG Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (G1) on Essential Quality.

Tom Eaves, riding in his first Breeders' Cup, won the Turf Sprint (G1) on Glass Slippers (GB).

Colin Keane, also riding in his first Breeders' Cup, won the Longines Turf (G1) on Tarnawa (IRE).

Weld, Three Other Trainers Post Initial Breeders' Cup Victories
Dermot Weld, who saddled his first two Breeders' Cup starters in 1985, broke through Saturday with his first victory in the World Championships when Tarnawa (IRE) won the Longines Turf (G1). Tarnawa represented Weld's 17th Breeders' Cup starter.  james fan

Also picking up their initial victories were Ron Moquett, Kevin Ryan and James Fanshawe.

Moquett won the Sprint (G1) with Whitmore who was running in the Sprint for the fourth consecutive year. Moquett, who saddled his first Breeders' Cup runner in 1999, has started two other horses besides Whitmore.

Ryan, who won the Turf Sprint (G1) with Glass Slippers (GB), had had only one previous Breeders' Cup starter with East (GB), who had finished second in the Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) at Churchill Downs in 2018.

Fanshawe won with his first Breeders' Cup starter, Audarya (FR) in the Maker's Mark Filly & Mare Turf (G1).

Five Favorites Won Over the Weekend 
Five favorites delivered victories from the 14 Championship races during the 2020 Breeders' Cup at Keeneland with three more finishing second.

The winning favorites were Golden Pal (Juvenile Turf Sprint-G2), Aunt Pearl (IRE) (Juvenile Fillies Turf-G1), Gamine (Filly & Mare Sprint-G1), Knicks Go (Big Ass Fans Dirt Mile-G1) and Monomoy Girl (Longines Distaff-G1).

The highest price winner of the weekend was Order of Australia (IRE) in the FanDuel Mile presented by PDJF (G1) with a $148.40 win mutuel on a $2 bet.

Kentucky and European-Based Runners Dominate at Keeneland 
There were 14 World Championship races this weekend at Keeneland and Kentucky-based runners accounted for victories in half of them.

The Kentucky-based winners were Golden Pal (Juvenile Turf Sprint-G2), Fire At Will (Juvenile Turf presented by Coolmore America-G1), Aunt Pearl (IRE) (Juvenile Fillies Turf-G1), Essential Quality (TVG Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance-G1), Whitmore (Sprint-G1), Knicks Go (Big Ass Fans Dirt Mile-G1) and Monomoy Girl (Longines Distaff-G1).

The Europeans made a clean sweep of the four turf races Saturday starting with Glass Slippers (GB) in the Turf Sprint (G1) and followed by Audarya (FR) in the Maker's Mark Filly & Mare Turf (G1), Order of Australia (IRE) in the FanDuel Mile presented by PDJF (G1) and Tarnawa (IRE) in the Longines Turf (G1).

California was represented by two winners, both trained by Bob Baffert and both track record-setters: Gamine (Filly & Mare Sprint-G1) and Authentic (Longines Classic-G1).

The other winner was Parx-based Vequist in Friday's Juvenile Fillies (G1).

Boudot Picks Up Another Breeder’s Cup Winner With Longshot Order Of Australia; O’Brien Sweeps Trifecta In The Mile

Another jockey unable to ride due to COVID-19, another winner for Frenchman Pierre-Charles Boudot on Breeders' Cup Saturday at Keeneland.

Earlier this week it was announced that Christophe Soumillon would not be able to ride at the Breeders' Cup due to testing positive twice for COVID-19, and Boudot picked up the mount in the Mile aboard Coolmore's Order of Australia for trainer Aidan O'Brien. The 3-year-old son of Australia was listed at 30-1 on the morning line and hadn't made the main body of the field; he only drew in when One Master scratched from the race.

O'Brien had three horses in the race and the finished one-two-three, though it was the longest shot on the board at 73-1 who topped the trifecta. Order of Australia defeated his stablemates Circus Maximus and Lope Y Fernandez by a neck and by a length, respectively. He completed the mile over Keeneland's “good” turf course in 1:33.73.

Boudot won his first Breeders' Cup race with another pick up mount earlier on the card, with Audarya in the Filly & Mare Turf, and was delighted to win his second just a couple races later.

“It's just unbelievable,” Boudot said. “It's just a dream come true for me.”

Order of Australia was sharp at the break, and Boudot made the most of his outside post position by getting a clear run on the outside from fourth position. Circus Maximus was at the rail in fifth, while Lope Y Fernandez was further back in the field.

Up front, Halladay set unhindered fractions of :23.48 and :46.97 while a length clear of Factor This and Kameko. Halladay still held the lead turning into the straight, but Order of Australia had moved up to be in a three-way battle for second, essentially trapping Circus Maximus on the rail for almost a sixteenth of a mile.

By the time Ryan Moore got Circus Maximus angled out, Boudot and Order of Australia were already in gear and running down the frontrunner. At the finish, Order of Australia was a neck ahead of the stronger-finishing Circus Maximus, while Lope Y Fernandez came flying late to gain third over Ivar. Defending Breeders' Cup Mile winner Uni checked in fifth.

Bred in Ireland by Whisperview Trading Ltd., which represents O'Brien's wife, Order of Australia is out of the Danehill mare Senta's Dream, making him a half-brother to last year's Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner Iridessa (trained by Joseph O'Brien). Their second dam is Starine, the millionaire mare trained by Bobby Frankel to win the 2002 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

Order of Australia Blows Up Tote in the Mile

Order of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}) only drew into the race with the scratch of One Master (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and needed a back-up rider when Christophe Soumillon was sidelined by a positive COVID test, but the 3-year-old overcame it all to lead home a one-two-three finish for Coolmore and trainer Aidan O’Brien in the GI Fanduel Breeders’ Cup Mile Saturday at Keeneland.

Off as a 73-1 outsider with Pierre-Charles Boudot picking up the ride from Soumillon, Order of Australia was able to get down into the three path after veering a bit outward at the break and sat within striking distance as Halladay (War Front) and Factor This (The Factor) eyeballed each other up front. Looming a threat turning for home, the bay sophomore took command inside the final sixteenth of a mile and withstood a late run from G1 Queen Anne S. winner Circus Maximus (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) for the victory.

“Aidan [O’Brien] was very confident before the race and he told me, ‘He is fast and he’s a proper horse for the mud and the good ground and he did it very well,” Boudot said after winning his second championship race of the day. “I took a good place just behind the pace. He travelled very nicely on the bridle and

when I ask him, he give me a very nice turn of foot.”

Earlier on the card, Boudot rode Audarya (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) to victory in the F/M Turf. It was another pick-up mount for the jockey after Ioritz Mendizabal tested positive for COVID.

“It’s a dream come true,” Boudot said of the double. “It is only by chance to get these rides and I’m sorry for Ioritz Mendizabal and Christophe Soumillon. It’s a difficult situation with COVID, but I was given two nice opportunities. I’m over the moon.”

It was the 13th Breeders’ Cup win for trainer Aidan O’Brien, but his first in the Mile and it was the second biggest upset in Breeders’ Cup history.

“It’s a real team effort, we’re very happy,” said Pat Keating, O’Brien’s traveling head man. “First three home is unbelievable. You need a lot of luck in this game. We’re lucky enough to have good horses and  good jockeys. I’m just happy for everyone involved.”

Order of Australia was fourth in the G1 Irish Derby and seventh in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club while still a maiden and he only won his first race four starts back at Dundalk Sept. 18. He followed up with an allowance win at The Curragh Sept. 27 and was a well-beaten ninth in a listed race in Kildare last time out Oct. 11.

The unraced Senta’s Dream is also the dam of last year’s GI Breeders’ Cup F/M Turf winner Iridessa (Ire) (Ruler of the World {Ire}). Order of Australia’s second dam is 2002 GI F/M Turf winner Starine (Fr) (Mendocino), who sold for $1 million at that year’s Keeneland November sale.

Order of Australia’s 2-year-old half -sister Santa Barbara (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) was tabbed a ‘TDN Rising Star‘ following a debut win at The Curragh Sept. 26.

Australia, winner of the 2014 G1 Irish Derby, is a son of two-time F/M Turf winner Oujia Board (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}). Order of Australia is his 12th graded stakes winner and his second Group 1 winner. His son Galileo Chrome (Ire) won this year’s G1 English St. Leger S.

Boudot at Brilliant Best As Audarya Upsets FM Turf

French Group 1 winner Audarya (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) punctuated her U.S. debut with a well-earned victory over five-time Grade I scorer Rushing Fall (More Than Ready) in the Maker’s Mark GI Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Keeneland Saturday afternoon. GI Woodbine Mile heroine Starship Jubilee (Indy Wind) stumbled at the start, dropping Florent Geroux as Cayenne Pepper (Ire) (Australia {GB}) raced out from her outside berth to set the pace with Mean Mary (Scat Daddy) and Rushing Fall in close pursuit. Approaching the half-mile pole, Audarya moved through on the inside to assume fourth while tracking the leading trio to the top of the stretch where Cayenne Pepper began to wilt. Taken three-wide off the rail turning for home, Audarya put Mean Mary away at the sixteenth pole and gradually wore down the classy Rushing Fall late to score by a half-length. Harvey’s Lil Goil (American Pharoah) rallied to be third. Starship Jubilee and Geroux appeared to be fine after the eventful start. It was the first Breeders’ Cup win for trainer James Fanshawe and Pierre-Charles Boudot.
“First of all, thanks to all the team at home,” said Fanshawe, who indicated the filly would like stay in training in 2021. “The [traveling crew] has looked after her superbly since she’s been here. She’s done everything right since she’s been here. I just can’t believe it, some race to win. I’m just so thrilled. Pierre-Charles gave her a superb ride. Breeders Cup has looked after us amazingly.”
Of Rushing Fall, trainer Chad Brown added, “That’s what it sounds like talking to Javier [Castellano] [the distance got her]. I thought she was going to be able to pull it off in deep stretch here, but it wasn’t to be. She’s had an outstanding career. She’s definitely the horse of a lifetime for anybody including me. Javier has done a super job riding her entire career. I just thanked him for that. Sad to see her go [be retired], because you’re not going to replace her easily or if ever. Bottom line is I was super proud of her effort today. She gave it all she had. I think it would be fitting [if she won the Eclipse Award] because she deserves it.”
Listed placed at three, the €125,000 Arqana October yearling purchase failed to factor in a pair of English starts in early summer before visiting the winner’s circle for the first time in almost a year in a 10-furlong all-weather test at Newcastle Aug. 2. Recording a career high victory in the Aug. 23 G1 Darley Prix Jean Romanet at Deauville, the French-bred finished third to Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal) in ParisLongchamp’s G1 Prix de l’Opera Longines Oct. 4.

Pedigree Insights:
French-bred Green Bananas, a daughter of Group 3-placed Anabaa Republic (Fr), produced her last registered foal in 2018, a colt by Polarix (GB), who died last season.
