Pierre-Charles Boudot Indicted On Rape Charge

Pierre-Charles Boudot, who was arrested on Monday in Chantilly along with fellow jockey Pierre Bazire, has been charged with the rape of a work rider in February. The French champion jockey was released on bail of €50,000 on Wednesday and placed under judicial supervision.

Bazire is also under supervision and has been charged with failing to prevent and report a crime. Both jockeys have also been named as witnesses to the intimidation of a witness.

The charges relate to an allegation made against Boudot, 28, by a 25-year-old female exercise rider two days after an alleged assault in Cagnes-sur-Mer on Feb. 17, 2021.

Jean-Baptiste Bladier of the Senlis public prosecutor's office released a statement on Wednesday which read, “Following the relinquishment of the Grasse public prosecutor's office in favour of that of Senlis, due to the usual domicile of the defendant and the complainant, a preliminary investigation, opened on the count of rape, was entrusted to the Chantilly police.

“Following a large number of interviews, on May 10, 2021 the investigators placed M. Pierre-Charles Boudot and another jockey, identified by the press as Pierre Bazire, in police custody. Today, May 12, 2021, the Senlis prosecutor's office requested the opening of a judicial investigation.”

Boudot had previously been accused of rape in 2018 when a complaint was made against him by a female amateur rider for an assault which was alleged to have taken place in 2015. The jockey strongly refuted the claims in a statement released through his lawyer in January 2020.

The restrictions of Boudot's judicial supervision mean that he is forbidden from appearing in the Oise region of France, which includes Chantilly, where he lives.

A three-time winner of the Cravache d'Or as leading rider in France, Boudot already has a commanding lead in this year's championship and has to date ridden 105 winners, more than double the number of his nearest rival Theo Bachelot. As of Wednesday afternoon, he was booked to ride four horses at ParisLongchamp on Thursday, including the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe runner-up In Swoop (Ire) (Adlerflug {Ger}) in the G3 Prix d'Hedouville. Under normal circumstances Boudot would also be expected to feature in the first French Classics of the season, the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains and G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, which are set to be run at the course on Sunday.

Late on Wednesday evening France Galop issued a statement advising of an interim two-day suspension for Boudot. Bazire has no rides booked during that time and both jockeys  will be allowed to make representation to the governing body by 3pm on Friday before a decision on potential further suspension is taken.

The statement read, “Although the two jockeys remain presumed innocent, given the seriousness of the alleged facts, and the potential damage to racing's image…the directors of France Galop have issued an urgent precautionary measure of immediate suspension of [Boudot's] licence for the next two days.”

French Jockeys Arrested Following Rape Claim

France's champion jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot and weighing-room colleague Pierre Bazire were arrested on Monday in Chantilly following an allegation of rape, according to reports in the French media.

The jockeys have been stood down from their riding commitments at Chantilly today (Tuesday), where Boudot, three-time winner of France's Cravache d'Or as leading rider, was set to have five rides and Bazire three.

This is the second time that Boudot, 28, has been connected to an allegation of rape. In 2018, a complaint was made against him by a female amateur rider for an assault which was alleged to have taken place in 2015. The jockey strongly refuted the claims in a statement released through his lawyer in January 2020.

The latest accusation is reported to have stemmed from an incident at a party at Cagnes-sur-Mer in February of this year. According to a report in March in the newspaper Le Parisien, a complaint was filed against Boudot on Feb. 19. The report also stated that Boudot's lawyer said the jockey had been receiving threats for a year.

In a tweet on March 1, Boudot said, “I'm not surprised. I was threatened by the complainant's family. Those who testified for me were harassed. Others lobbied for a new complaint to be brought against me. I have absolutely nothing to reproach myself with.”

Winner of of the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on Waldgeist (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) in 2019, Boudot's most recent big-race success came aboard Mare Australis (Ire) (Australia {GB}) for Andre Fabre in the G1 Prix Ganay on May 2. The second forfeit stage for this Sunday's French Guineas is on Wednesday.

Ganay Triumph For Australia’s Mare Australis

There was more Boudot magic at ParisLongchamp on Sunday as “PC” made all to draw the sting from all rivals and land the G1 Prix Ganay with the rapid improver Mare Australis (Ire) (Australia {GB}). Always highly-regarded and now an entirely different proposition from the greenhorn of last summer, Gestut Schlenderhan's homebred had offered a glimpse of what was to come when second on his return to Skalleti (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) in the 10-furlong G2 Prix d'Harcourt at this venue Apr. 11. Asked a new question by his rider on this sternest test of his ability so far, the 5-2 second favourite responded by stretching every rival including Mogul (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) who was in closest attendance. When he kicked in early straight, he turned the screw too tight on Ballydoyle's 9-5 market-leader raider and kept galloping true to the line to beat the emergent Gold Trip (Fr) (Outstrip {GB}) by 1 3/4 lengths. Providing Andre Fabre with a seventh renewal of this prestige event, he offered proof of his talent by gapping the eventual third Mogul by 3 1/2 lengths in total. “He's always been a nice horse, but he's needed a lot of time as he was very immature,” Fabre explained. “He's coming around now and had run a very good race in the Harcourt. He won really nicely today and I'll keep him in France and maybe go for the [G1] Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. I don't know yet, but his target will be the Arc later in the season.”

One of a clutch of Schlenderhan horses sent to France at the end of 2019 along with the now-famous In Swoop (Ire) (Adlerflug {Ger}) and talented Alson (Ger) (Areion {Ger}), Mare Australis had beaten the subsequent group 2 winner Zamrud (Ger) (Samum {Ger}) on his sole start at two for the Jean-Pierre Carvalho stable at Munich. In deep on his debut for this stable when fourth behind the smart Port Guillaume (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}), Gold Trip and Dawn Intello (Fr) (Intello {Ger}) in a 10 1/2-furlong conditions race at Saint-Cloud last May, he made heavy weather of winning the 12-furlong Listed Prix de l'Avre at Chantilly the following month. Not seen again until finishing second to the Irish revelation Baron Samedi (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) in the G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris over 11 furlongs here in October, the bay was no match for the still-underestimated Skalleti in the Prix d'Harcourt but again demonstrated that he finds plenty for pressure. With Fabre having worked the oracle in the interim, he looked a ready-made Arc challenger here after that fine-tuning process. The solid marker Gold Trip was just over two lengths behind Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) in the autumn showpiece, so Mare Australis is already comfortably in the vicinity when it comes to that target.

Mare Australis is the last known foal out of the triple listed-placed Miramare (Ger) (Rainbow Quest), a daughter of the German listed scorer Minaccia (Ger) (Platini {Ger}). She in turn produced five black-type performers headed by the G2 Prix de Pomone and G3 Prix Allez France winner Macleya (Ger) (Winged Love {Ire}) and the G3 Prix de Barbeville scorer Montclair (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}). She is also the second dam of this stable's Listed Prix de Pontarme winner and G2 Prix du Muguet third Mer et Nuages (Fr) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) and the GII Fort Marcy S. winner Tribhuvan (Fr) (Toronado {Ire}). The fourth dam is the dual Classic-winning German champion Majoritat (Ger) (Konigsstuhl {Ger}), a close relative of the great Monsun (Ger) whose list of descendants feature the G1 Japanese Derby hero Eishin Flash (Jpn) (King's Best).

Pierre-Charles Boudot Confirmed For Saudi Cup’s International Jockeys’ Challenge

One of Europe's elite riders, Pierre-Charles Boudot, is the sixth participant to be confirmed for The Saudi Cup's International Jockeys' Challenge (IJC) on Friday, Feb. 19 at King Abdulaziz Racecourse in Riyadh.

The Frenchman, who rode 12 Group 1 winners in 2020, including on Champions Day at Royal Ascot and the Breeders' Cup at Keeneland, is the second of seven male jockeys to be announced, while Nanako Fujita of Japan will fill the fifth of seven spots for female riders.

He said: “I'm very excited to be competing in the International Jockeys' Challenge this year. Being asked to come and ride against the world's best feels like a great achievement and I'm very proud.

“2020 was a crazy and incredible year for me. I picked up some extra rides due to Covid and I ended up with 12 Group 1 winners, including three for Coolmore, two at the Breeders' Cup and one at Ascot on Champions Day too.”

The 28-year-old was not involved in last year's IJC but did ride in two races on The Saudi Cup undercard on the Saturday, finishing fourth on the Fabrice Chappet-trained Intellogent in the Middle Distance Turf Cup and fourth on Ala Sawab in The Jockey Club Local Handicap.

Remembering the day in 2020, Boudot said: “I rode on Saudi Cup day last year and it was a great experience. The turf was perfect and the dirt is possibly the best in the world.”

The Frenchman has been busy riding winners in France already this year and is set to arrive at King Abdulaziz Racecourse in good form, though Europe's premier Flat race, the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe which takes place in October, will again be his top target.

“This year, I would like to begin with a nice winner at the Saudi races and then I hope to find myself another good horse for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. I have been riding in France this month and things are going well. I've got a very good strike rate at the moment, with 17 winners from 40 runners, so I feel in good form and I'm ready to go.”

Popular Japanese rider Fujita was set to line up in last year's International Jockeys' Challenge but suffered a broken collarbone a fortnight before while riding in Japan.

The exciting 23-year-old jockey is looking forward to the prospect of taking her chance this year: “I would like to thank the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia for selecting me as one of the participants at the International Jockeys' Challenge.

“It is a great honor for me, and I am excited to receive the invitation. I look forward to riding together with world-renowned top riders in Saudi Arabia”.

This year's International Jockeys' Challenge will take place on Friday, Feb. 19 – the day before the $20 million Saudi Cup. Jockeys will be made up of seven international women, two local men and five international men. The prize money in each of the four races will be $400,000 and there is a $100,000 prize pot for the Jockeys' Challenge with $30,000 going to the winner.

Half of the 14 riders have now been confirmed:

Sibylle Vogt, 25, (SWI)

Jorge Ricardo, 59 (BRA)

Jessica Marcialis, 30 (ITA)

Maria Lujan Asconiga, 27 (ARG)

Nieves Garcia, 43 (SPA)

Pierre-Charles Boudot, 28 (FRA)

Nanako Fujita, 23 (JPN)
