‘Going’ For Five in a Row

The streaking Going Global (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) looks to make it five straight wins in Saturday's GIII Honeymoon S. at Santa Anita.

A handicap winner at Dundalk in November 2020, Going Global is a perfect three-for-three at a variety of distances on these shores for Phil D'Amato, including the six-furlong GIII Sweet Life S. Feb. 14, the one-mile China Doll S. Mar. 6 and the GIII Providencia S. going 1 1/8 miles last time Apr. 3.

“Going Global proved last time a mile and an eighth wasn't a problem,” D'Amato said. “I gave her a bit of a freshening after three stakes wins in a row so I could have her ready for this race going into Del Mar.”

Madone (Vancouver {Aus}) kicked off her sophomore campaign with a win in the GIII Senorita S. May 1. A winner of her first three starts, including the Surfer Girl S. last fall, the lone blemish on her record is an eighth-place finish in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Keeneland Nov. 6.

Irish-Bred Going Global Headlines Saturday’s Honeymoon At Santa Anita

Perfect in three local stakes assignments, trainer Phil D'Amato's streaking Irish-bred Going Global bids for her fourth consecutive turf stakes victory as she heads a field of seven sophomore fillies going a mile and one eighth on grass in Saturday's Grade 3, $100,000 Honeymoon Stakes at Santa Anita.

Going Global's primary opposition should come from Simon Callaghan's recent Grade 3 winner Madone and Richard Mandella's Golden, who was a solid second to Madone here in the Grade 3 Senorita Stakes on May 1.

Dismissed at 8-1 in her U.S. debut, the Grade 3 Sweet Life Stakes at six furlongs on Feb. 14, Going Global surged late to win by a half length, and then took the one mile China Doll Stakes by three quarters of a length as the even money favorite on March 6.

Off at 3-5 in the Grade 3 Providencia Stakes and at a mile and one eighth, Going Global was attentive to the pace and prevailed in a hotly contested stretch battle to win by a neck. A winner of her final start in her native Ireland, a seven furlong race versus males over a synthetic surface Nov. 11, Going Global has now won four straight races.

With Flavien Prat engaged to ride her for the fourth consecutive time on Saturday, Going Global, who is owned by CYBT, Michael Dubb, Saul Gervitz, Michael Nentwig and Ray Pagano, will be a short price to improve upon an overall mark of 7-4-0-0 and earnings of $188,792.

Ridden for the first time by Juan Hernandez, Madone surged late to take the one mile turf Senorita by one length at 5-2 and will hope to outrun the top selection as she stretches out a furlong off of five consecutive races at one mile on turf. With the Senorita being her first graded win, Madone, a 3-year-old filly by the Medaglia d'Oro stallion Vancouver, out of the Cherokee Run mare Indian Love Call, has three stakes wins and four victories from five overall starts.

Owned by Kaleem Shah, Madone, who was purchased for $125,000 out of a Florida 2-year-old in training sale a year ago March, has earnings of $211,300.

Next to last early in a field of 10, LNJ Foxwoods' homebred Golden flew the final eighth of mile to finish second, beaten one length by Madone at odds of 29-1 in the Grade 3 Senorita on May 1.

A chestnut filly by Tapit out of the Caerleon mare Gold Round, Golden, who was no match when fifth to Going Global in the ungraded China Doll Stakes two starts back on March 6, is 4-1-0-1 with earnings of $45,940.

D’Amato Looks To Have Strong Hand In May 22 Honeymoon At Santa Anita

Santa Anita's leading trainer Phil D'Amato has two 3-year-old fillies primed for next Saturday's Grade 3 Honeymoon Stakes, streaking Going Global and Majestic Steps.

Both bred in Ireland, Going Global is unbeaten in three races in the United States, all stakes, the Grade 3 Sweet Life, the restricted China Doll and the Grade 3 Providencia, advancing in distance each time from six furlongs to a mile and an eighth.

The Honeymoon will be decided at a mile and an eighth.

Majestic Steps broke her maiden in her first U.S. start back on Jan. 2 and has had eventful trips in each of her races here, including the Grade 3 Senorita Stakes last out on May 1.

“Going Global proved last time a mile and an eighth wasn't a problem,” D'Amato said, speaking of the Providencia which the bay filly won by a neck despite being pinballed at the start.

“I gave her a bit of a freshening after three stakes wins in a row so I could have her ready for this race going into Del Mar.

“Majestic Steps is a hard-trying filly. If she can ever get her perfect trip, she has a chance, too, but Going Global is a more proven commodity at the moment.”

Majestic Steps' trouble lines in her five U.S. starts read like something out of a trainer's worst nightmare: “Bumped, checked twice, broke out, pinballed, three-wide turn, checked upper stretch and steadied.”

Leggs Galore Outfoots Fran’s Valentine Rivals At Santa Anita

In her first two turn assignment, William Sims' homebred Leggs Galore went to the lead and never looked back, taking Sunday's $100,000 Fran's Valentine Stakes at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif., by three quarters of a length over heavily favored Warren's Showtime. Trained by Phil D'Amato and ridden by Ricky Gonzalez, Leggs Galore got one mile on turf in 1:34.85.

With a pair of scratches earlier in the day, the Fran's Valentine was reduced to a field of four older California-bred fillies and mares. To the surprise of no one, Leggs Galore bounced out of the gate from her rail post and turned the race into a virtual parade to the far turn, with Kristi's Tiger a length and a half off the lead three furlongs out and Warren's Showtime another half length back.

With the chestnut Warren's Showtime in high gear mid-way around the turn, she had the leader well within her sights while two lengths back turning for home, but Leggs Galore never backed up and in fact maintained her advantage on the gallop out around the Club House turn.

“The main thing with her is trying to get her to relax, get a breather down the backside,” said Gonzalez, who has now ridden the 4-year-old daughter of Bayern in her last six starts, winning five of them. “I knew that if she got it, that little breather, that she would be just fine because her speed is her main weapon and she proved that today.”

A well beaten sixth as the 6-5 favorite in the six furlong turf Mizdirection Stakes versus open company here on April 17, Leggs Galore was the second choice today at 2-1 and she paid $6.00 and $2.60 with no show wagering.

“It opens the big door, to where we have two options and just kind of pick the right spot that suits her best,” D'Amato said, when asked by TVG's Britney Eurton about winning around two turns. “There's a nice little Grade 3 at the end of the meet and I might try her in there,” said D'Amato. “I think it's the Wilshire ($100,000, at one mile on turf June 20). When I saw 23, I was thinking 22 and change, 23 if we are lucky, and when I saw that, I thought we had no excuses and we'll see what she's made of. Ricky did a beautiful job.”

Out of Sims' Indian Charlie mare Cashing Tickets, Leggs Galore now has three stakes wins and six victories from nine overall starts. With today's winner's share of $60,000, she increased her earnings to $322,708.

Ridden by Juan Hernandez, consistent Warren's Showtime was perhaps done in by the short field as much as anything else, as she attended the pace, but was unable to threaten the winner despite mounting a solid stretch rally.

Off at 3-5, Warren's Showtime paid $2.10 to place while finishing 3 ½ lengths clear of Pulpit Rider.

Fractions on the race were 23.00, 46.77, 1:10.96 and 1:22.93.

The Fran's Valentine, named for the multiple Grade 1 stakes winning Earl Scheib homebred daughter of Saros, is part of the lucrative Golden State Series. Sponsored by the CTBA, the Golden State Series is for eligible California-bred or sired horses.

Live racing resumes on Friday, with first post time for an eight-race card at 1 p.m. Fans are advised that admission gates will open at 7 a.m. for Preakness Day simulcasting on Saturday, with Infield Admission gates opening at 9 a.m.
