Camelot’s Sammarco Prevails in G2 Union-Rennen Thriller

Gestut Park Wiedingen's homebred 3-year-old colt Sammarco (Ire) (Camelot {GB}–Saloon Sold {Ger}, by Soldier Hollow {GB}) outpointed subsequent sales-race winner Alaska Tiger (Ire) (Maxios {GB}) by a neck when annexing his Oct. 30 debut over 7 1/2 furlongs at Halle in his lone juvenile start and came back this term to finish second behind subsequent G2 Prix Hocquart third Lavello (Ire) (Zarak {Fr}) in Munich's May 1 G3 Bavarian Classic last time. The April-foaled bay enjoyed considerable support as the 14-5 second favourite for Monday's G2 Sparkasse KolnBonn – 187th Union-Rennen, Germany's premier trial for next month's G1 Deutsches Derby, and delivered on earlier promise to earn a tilt at that Classic with a narrow victory in the Weidenpescher venue's feature. The eventual winner was reined back after a sharp getaway and tracked a solid tempo in third as Bavarian Classic third and fourth Maraseem (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}) and So Moonstruck (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) raced up ahead along the backstraight. Bustled along as 17-10 pick So Moonstruck was sent to the front approaching the final quarter mile, he made continued headway to join that rival entering the final furlong and stayed on in game fashion to prevail by a head in a head-bobbing finish, with the duo six lengths clear of the remainder.

“Sammarco may only be small in stature, but he is all heart,” insisted winning rider Bauyrzhan Murzabayev. “The pace was good for him, which allowed him to gallop freely, so I had a good feeling all the way around.” Winning trainer Peter Schiergen added, “We were hoping he might be placed in the first three, but he won and that's even better. There's a good four-plus weeks to the [G1 Deutsches] Derby, so we have enough time to get him ready for the big day.”

Sammarco, who becomes the 30th pattern-race winner for his sire (by Montjeu {Ire}), is the first of three foals produced by Listed Winterkonigin-Trial third Saloon Sold (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), herself a granddaughter of Listed Baden-Baden Cup victrix Salonblue (Ire) (Bluebird). The latter's progeny list includes Listed Melbourne Cup Day Plate victor Salon Soldier (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), GSP Listed Junioren-Preis victrix Salonlove (Ger) (Lawman {Fr}) and Listed Premio Tadolina winner Monblue (GB) (Monsun {Ger}). She is also the second dam of Listed Preis der Baden-Badener Hotellerie & Gastronomie winner Serena (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}). Salonblue is kin to G3 Curragh Cup victor Peppertree Lane (Ire) (Peintre Celebre) and stakes-winning G3 Preis der Deutschen Einheit second Salonhonor (Ger) (Highest Honor {Fr}). Another of Salonblue's siblings, Salontasche (Ger) (Dashing Blade {GB}), has four stakes performers to her credit headed by multiple stakes-winning G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) runner-up Sarandia (Ger) (Dansili {GB}) and G3 Bavarian Classic victor Saphir (Ger) (Black Sam Bellamy {Ire}). Sammarco's fourth dam is G2 German 1000 Guineas third Salonrolle (Ire) (Tirol {Ire}). Saloon Sold has the hitherto unraced 2-year-old filly Salon Starlet (Ger) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}) and a yearling colt by Areion (Ger) to come.

Lizaid Registers A Stakes First For Zarak In Germany

Trainer Peter Schiergen had already scooped last month's G3 Zukunfstrennen, one of Germany's four juvenile pattern-race contests, with Rocchigiani (GB) (Time Test {GB}) and he doubled up with the once-raced maiden winner Lizaid (Ger) (Zarak {Fr}) in Sunday's G3 Die Winterkonigin – Preis des Derbysiegers Sisfahan at Baden-Baden to provide that filly's freshman sire (by Dubawi {Ire}) with a first black-type triumph. Lizaid's debut score came in the same one-mile Hannover maiden annexed by 2018 heroine Whispering Angel (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) and she remained undefeated to provide her trainer with a fourth renewal and a first since 2007. The eventual winner was well away from the inside stall and bowled along behind the leading duo in third after the initial exchanges of this black-type bow. Sent wide with the field into the straight, the 27-5 chance claimed the stands' side rail and the lead with 350 metres remaining and kept on strongly under final-furlong rousting to secure a career high by 2 1/4 lengths from 28-1 rank outsider Rondina (Ger) (Intello {Ger}). Rondina denied Schiergen an exacta by outbobbing Barina (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) by a short head for second while 33-10 favourite Lacuna (GB) (Shalaa {Ire}) ran on from rear to finish a neck back in fourth.

Schiergen was delighted with the performances of Lizaid and Barina and said, “Both fillies had been working well and had improved from their debut victory, as a lot of my young horses do, so we were quite hopeful beforehand. Looking at the way they are bred, they should both be suited by longer distances next year.”

Lizaid is the first of two foals produced by G2 Diana-Trial third Litaara (Ger) (Wiener Walzer {Ger}), herself kin to MGSW G2 Union-Rennen victor Liang Kay (Ger) (Dai Jin {GB}) and stakes-winning G3 Kolner Herbst-Stuten-Meile placegetter Laeya Star (Ger) (Royal Dragon). The latter is the dam of G3 Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen third Laeyos (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) while Liang Kay's full-sister Laey Diamond (Ger) produced G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) heroine Lacazar (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) and G3 Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen runner-up Liberry Gold (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}). The March-foaled homebred bay's dual stakes-winning second dam Linton Bay (Ger) (Funambule) is the leading performer out of Ludhiana (Ger) (Ti Amo {Ger}), whose descendants also include Listed Bayerischer Fliegerpreis and Listed Dallmayr Coupe Lukull winner Lonicera (Ger) (Charmer {Ire}). Lizaid hails from the family of Preis der Diana-winning champion Lis (Ger) (Masetto {Ger}) and she is kin to a weanling filly by Best Solution (Ire).

Half-Brother To Torquator Tasso Graduates At Cologne

Holger Renz's €38,000 BBAG September graduate Tunnes (Ger) (Guiliani {Ire}), a half-brother to last week's G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe hero Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}), bettered a debut second at Cologne last month with a three-length score in Sunday's Alson-Rennen back at the Weidenpescher venue.

1st-Cologne, €5,100, Mdn, 10-10, 2yo, 9 1/4fT, 1:57.83, g/s.
TUNNES (GER) (c, 2, Guiliani {Ire}–Tijuana {Ger}, by Toylsome {GB}), who ran second going one mile in his Sept. 26 debut at this venue last time, was swiftly into stride and led from flagfall. Untroubled on the front end for the most part, the 4-5 favourite kicked clear in early straight and ran on strongly under whipless coaxing inside the final quarter mile to easily defeat Antinanco (Ire) (Champs Elysees {GB}) by three lengths. Tunnes, the fourth of five foals, becomes the second scorer produced by a half-sister to three stakes performers headed by the G2 Diana-Trial victrix Tusked Wings (Ire) (Adlerflug {Ger}). The April-foaled chestnut is a half-brother to MG1SW G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe hero and G1 Deutsches Derby runner-up Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}), who also shed maiden status at this venue, and a yearling filly by Adlerflug (Ger). His third dam, Listed Prix Occitanie runner-up Turbaine (Trempolino), is also the dam of Guiliani's sire Tertullian (Miswaki) which gives Tunnes a 3×3 inbreeding to Turbaine. Turbaine is a half-sister to G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe-winning blue hen Urban Sea (Miswaki). Sales history: €38,000 Ylg '20 BBAGS. Lifetime Record: 2-1-1-0, €3,570.

Gleneagles Filly Powers to German 1000 Guineas Triumph

Gestut Brummerhof's Novemba (Ger) (Gleneagles {Ire}) may have appeared to set an unsustainable pace when scooting off in front under Sybille Vogt in Sunday's G2 Wempe 101st German 1000 Guineas at Dusseldorf, but she was not for catching and powered further clear of toiling rivals to secure an impressive 7 1/2-length triumph. Vogt's enterprising tactics also yielded a first Classic success for a female rider. Novemba took two goes to shed maiden status, which she did at Hannover in August, and ran seventh in Baden-Baden's Sept. 12 G3 Zukunftsrennen before closing her juvenile campaign with a second in the Oct. 18 G3 G3 Preis der Winterkonigin back at the Iffezheim venue in her penultimate start. She tuned up for this with a fourth in the May 8 Listed Henkel-Stutenpreis over course and distance on seasonal return last time. The 107-10 chance was sharpest from the stalls and seized an immediate lead. Three lengths to the good rounding the home turn, she had all 10 rivals stretched when stoked up approaching the two pole and extended clear in style to easily account for Godolphin's French raider Sky Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) by daylight, with G3 Schwarzgold-Rennen victrix Belcarra (Ire) (Estidhkaar {Ire}) deprived of second by a neck in the dying strides.

“We were quite sure she would run a good race as she had been working very well at home, but that she would put up such a performance was a pleasant surprise,” admitted trainer Peter Schiergen. “Sybille [Vogt] did everything right by deciding to take the initiative and make her own race. Novemba quite obviously enjoyed herself out there in front and she has shown us that she belongs in this class. We will continue from here, whether in Germany or France, and I will decide with the owners what to do next over the coming days. We are really happy with her.”

Novemba becomes the first Classic and seventh pattern-race winner for her sire (by Galileo {Ire}) as well as being the first black-type scorer for her stakes-winning dam Nevada (Ger) (Dubai Destination). Her stakes-winning second dam Norwegian Pride (Fr) (Diktat {GB}) produced MGSW G2 German 2000 Guineas runner-up Nordico (Ger) (Medicean {GB}) and Listed Iffezheimer Derby-Trial victor and G3 Deutsches St Leger placegetter Nordic Flight (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}). Novemba's fourth dam Turban (GB) (Glint of Gold {GB}) also produced the Listed Fern Hill H. victrix Barboukh (GB) (Night Shift), whose descendants include G3 Prix Exbury victor Barbola (Diesis {GB}) and G3 Stora Pris winner Sir Lando(GB) (Lando {Ger}). Turban is a half-sister to MG1SW sire Old Vic (GB) (Sadler's Wells) with this also being the family of the MG1SW German champion and leading sire Acatenango (Ger) (Surumu {Ger}). Nevada has the unraced 2-year-old colt Niagaro (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) and a yearling colt by Areion (Ger) to come.
