And Tell Me Nolies Gives Arrogate 2yo SoCal Stakes Sweep

In a replay of four weekends ago at Del Mar, juveniles by Arrogate swept the major 2-year-old stakes Saturday in Southern California. About an hour before Cave Rock doubled up on Grade I events in the American Pharoah S., And Tell Me Nolies posted a mild upset in the GII Chandelier S. at Santa Anita, a “Win and You're In” race for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Nov. 4 at Keeneland. Uncontrollable (Upstart) rallied late for second at 24-1, while Justique (Justify), the 6-5 favorite making her first appearance since a buzzed-about, 'TDN Rising Star'-garnering debut at Del Mar July 31, could only mount a mild bid and settled for a distant third.

“It's very exciting to have a filly that wants to run long like this so hopefully we get to the Breeders' Cup and I'm just thrilled with the way she ran today,” said winning trainer Peter Miller, who trains And Tell Me Nolies for Peter Redekop B. C., Ltd. out of San Luis Rey Downs.

Fresh off her head score in the seven-furlong GI Del Mar Debutante S. Sept 10, which followed a narrow neck maiden win at second asking Aug. 14 going 6 1/2 furlongs over the same track, And Tell Me Nolies was trying two turns for the first time in the Chandelier. The bay stumbled at the start, but was soon positioned in the clear while third from last behind a :22:85 first quarter. After a half in :46.71, she inched up, extended her stride, and looming threateningly in third on the turn. She entered the lane wide and took several extra strides to change to her proper lead, but the filly was clearly in her element as she comfortably held off a fast-closing Uncontrollable.

“She stumbled very badly at the break,” said winning rider Ramon Vazquez, who has been aboard the filly for all four of her career starts. “She did the same thing in the Debutante. We settled in, she knows not to move too early. She got a little tired late, but she knows what to do. She is getting better and better after every race. She can handle the distance. I think she is going to be a superstar later.”

It was the second win on the Santa Anita card Saturday for the trio of Vasquez, Miller, and Redekop with an offspring of Arrogate as they also took the second race, an optional allowance, with Apprehend. Redekop had purchased And Tell Me Nolies through agent Bryan Anderson for $230,000 as a 2-year-old at this April's OBS sale after she worked in :10 flat. D.J. Stable, who had purchased her for $70,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale, pinhooked her to OBS. D.J. Stable has their own “Win and You're In” contender for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, having captured Friday's GI Darley Alcibiades S. with Wonder Wheel (Into Mischief).

Pedigree Notes:

The late Arrogate is the sire of three Grade I winners from his two crops to race, as well as another three black-type winners. The Juddmonte stallion died at age seven in 2020 and has a final crop of yearlings still waiting in the wings. Interestingly, both And Tell Me Nolies and Cave Rock are by Danzig-line broodmare sires, while Secret Oath, Arrogate's GI Kentucky Oaks winner, is from a Fappiano-line broodmare sire. Exchange Rate, the Chandelier winner's damsire, has 25 stakes winners out of his daughters, including this year's GI New York S. winner Bleecker Street (Quality Road).

Be Fair, a half to 2009 GI Stephen Foster S. winner Macho Again (Macho Uno), has a yearling colt by Gun Runner and was bred to Mo Town for next term. Lara Run bred And Tell Me Nolies in Kentucky after purchasing her dam for $50,000 in 2018 at Keeneland November, then resold the mare at the 2021 OBS Winter Mixed Sale for $35,000 to Jim H. Ballinger. Ballinger sold that Gun Runner colt as a weanling last year at Keeneland November for $150,000 to McMahon & Hill Bloodstock.

Papa’s Golden Boy Tops 20 Nominees To Longacres Mile

Papa's Golden Boy, unbeaten in three starts this season including two stakes, heads a list of 20 horses nominated to the $200,000 Longacres Mile (G3) on Sunday, Aug. 15 at Emerald Downs in Auburn, Wash.

The 86th renewal of the Northwest's premier event shares billing with the $50,000 Emerald Distaff for older fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles.

The speedy Papa's Golden Boy is virtually untested this season at Emerald Downs, scoring daylight victories in all three starts including easy gate to wire scores in the Budweiser Stakes and Governor's Stakes at 6 and 6 ½ furlongs. The 5-year-old Harbor the Gold gelding must prove he can get the distance, however, after finishing fifth in the 2020 Longacres Mile. In the 2020 Mile, Papa's Golden Boy set fractions of :22 3/5, :45 1/5 and 1:08 3/5 before fading to fifth as Anothertwistafate prevailed by 4 ½ lengths in 1:34.

Peter Redekop, owner of Anothertwistafate, could make it two straight Miles as his Anyportinastorm is among a strong contingent of Southern California based runners nominated. The 7-year-old Florida-bred was 2019 Emerald Downs Horse of the Meeting, compiling a 2-1-0 record in three stakes starts capped by a gallant head defeat to Law Abidin Citizen in the Mile.

Longacres Mile winning trainers Doug O'Neill and Mark Glatt are well-represented in 2021. O'Neill nominated Grade 2-placed Parsimony while Glatt nominated Bold Endeavor and Zestful. Bold Endeavor has six consecutive 90-plus Beyers in main track routes while Zestful is multiple graded stakes-placed including a second in the 2019 Marathon Stakes (G2) on Breeders' Cup day at Santa Anita.

Hall of Fame trainer Neil Drysdale nominated Majestic Eagle, a locally owned graded winner on turf coming off a second in the recent Wickerr Stakes at Del Mar.

Longacres Mile winning trainer Mike Puhich and renowned former UW football/basketball announcer Bob Rondeau are represented by Background, a 4-year-old Florida-bred with over $150,000 in earnings this year and a 2-1-1 record at a mile.

John Parker, whose Gold Rush Dancer dominated the 2017 Mile, recently acquired Forest Fire, a 6-year-old Pennsylvania-bred with over $370,000 in earnings and a 4 for 7 record in one-mile races.

Five Star General, runner-up to Anothertwistafate in the 2020 Mile, heads a Canadian contingent that includes the stakes-winning Explode and the razor-sharp Sir Bregovic, unbeaten in four sprints this year in Vancouver.

A pair of 3-year-olds are on the list including Stillleto Boy, runaway winner of the $250,000 Iowa Derby at odds of 16 to 1 (95 Beyer).

Other locals include: Unmachable, track and state champion 3-year-old of 2020 and runner-up to Papa's Golden Boy in the Governor's Stakes; Hard to Deny, an improving 5-year-old with two straight allowance victories at one mile; and Windribbon, whose 1:07.53 in a June 30 allowance win is the fastest six-furlong clocking in North America in three years.

Handicap weights for the Mile will be announced Friday, August 6, with entries drawn Wednesday, August 11 at the Quarter Chute Cafe. If more than 12 horses are entered, the 12 highest weighted horses will be preferred.

The 26th running of the $50,000 Emerald Distaff at 1 1/16 miles is headlined by Daffodil Sweet, a 4-year-old Ministers Wild Cat filly with a 5 for 7 career record including a dominant score in the Washington State Legislators Stakes last month. In her lone try around two turns, Daffodil Sweet finished second to Princess of Cairo in the 2020 Washington Oaks. Conditioned by Sandi Gann, Princess of Cairo also is nominated to the Emerald Distaff.

OBS June Continues With Solid Results

OCALA, FL – Steady trade continued through the second session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company June Sale of 2-Year-Olds Thursday in Central Florida, with a filly by Nyquist bringing the day's top bid when selling for $420,000 to Gary Hartunian's Rockingham Ranch. The session-topping juvenile was consigned by Eddie Woods.

“It was another good day,” OBS Director of Sales Tod Wojciechowski said at the close of business Thursday. “We carried a lot of the momentum that we had yesterday into today and I think it will carry on through tomorrow.”

With two sessions in the books, OBS has sold 380 head for $15,776,500. The two-day average is $41,517 and the median is $18,000. With 106 horses reported not sold, the buy-back rate was 21.8%.

Through two sessions of the pandemic-delayed 2020 sale, 336 head had sold for $9,395,600 for an average of $27,963 and a median of $13,000. At the close of the day, the buy-back rate was 28.3%.

In 2019, 429 juveniles had sold through two session for a gross of $13,839,200. The average was $32,259 and the median was $17,000. The buy-back rate at the end of the second session in 2019 was 25.4%.

Sellers had concerns that the middle and lower end of the market would be weaker without the presence of Korean buyers, but Wojciechowski said the domestic bench had stepped up, not just at the June sale, but throughout the spring.

“I think there has been strength throughout the market,” he said. “Particularly on an overall scale for the 2-year-old season, we were missing a big part of our buying bench in the Koreans. I went on the record in March that I thought we could pick up the slack and I got a few sideways looks, but I think domestically, we've done a great job of picking up the slack and filling the hole that the Koreans left in the market. Hopefully, they will be back next year. But I still think one thing that has impressed at this sale and throughout the season is the depth that we've had in the market.”

Consignors still felt the absence of the Korean buyers, who are not only traditionally prolific buyers in the middle and lower market, but also tend to force other buyers to bid higher.

“There is money for the right horses, but if you don't have the horse, it's over,” Woods said. “There is no one for the rest. We are missing our Koreans for the mopping up. And I suppose there are only so many horses that can get bought anyway.”

Still, competition for the perceived quality lots was still strong as the juvenile sales season marched towards its conclusion.

“This is our fifth [purchase],” Lloyd said after signing the ticket on the session topper. “But yesterday we got outrun four out of five times. It's very competitive. The ones that look good and perform well, they are going to get sold. The market is strong and it's going to continue to get stronger. We are through COVID and the purses in New York and Kentucky and Arkansas are so huge.”

The OBS June sale concludes with a final session Friday with bidding beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Nyquist Filly to Rockingham Ranch

Gary Hartunian's Rockingham Ranch added a filly by Nyquist to its roster when Kim Lloyd made a final bid of $420,000 to acquire hip 543 from Eddie Woods's consignment at OBS Thursday.

“We loved this filly,” Lloyd said. “She is a beautiful filly. Eddie is a good friend of mine. He was telling me about her and how he gave her the time off. And when you give a young horse time off like that and they come around like that, this is what you get. She goes from here to the races. We're very excited.”

The chesntut filly is out of stakes winner Midnight Ballet (Midnight Lute) and worked a furlong last week in :10 1/5.

“I loved the length of her stride,” Lloyd said of the juvenile. “She's a scopey filly. You can see that she hit a growing spell.”

Lloyd, who did his bidding from the back of the pavilion while on the phone with Hartunian, had to outlast Donato Lanni, who was doing his bidding out back. Lloyd admitted he had often come out on the losing side of bidding battles with the well-backed Lanni.

“In September, we were the direct underbidder five times,” Lloyd said of bidding against Lanni. “And then, seven other times when I quit at $250,000, they lapped me…$500,000, $510,000. Twelve horses that I landed on, Donato bought.”

Woods's pinhooking partnership Quarter Pole Enterprises purchased the chestnut filly for $200,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

“She was in the Fasig [Gulfstream] catalogue, but she just wasn't hitting right,” Woods explained. “I turned her out for five weeks and brought her back. I didn't want to bring her to Timonium because she's too big, so we had no option but to come here. But it worked out. She was always going to be a nice filly regardless of where we went. We are really happy with how it turned out.”

Another Imprecation for Roden

Bloodstock agent Alistair Roden, who purchased subsequent multiple graded stakes winner Anothertwistafate (Scat Daddy) and multiple graded placed Ajourneytofreedom (Hard Spun) from the OBS sales ring, purchased a third juvenile out of the mare Imprecation (First Defence) when he went to $350,000 to acquire a filly by Dialed In (hip 418) on behalf of Peter Redekop Thursday in Ocala.

“I know the family very well,” Roden said with a smile after signing the ticket on the filly, who was consigned by Ciaran Dunne's Wavertree Stables on behalf of breeder Bryant Prentice. “When I first saw her, I thought she was like Ajourneytofreedom, but the more I looked at her, she was more like Anothertwistafate. She's large and well-balanced, a fancy-looking filly. The family seems to really improve. They all seem to be that type of a family, they are not wow horses in the springtime, but they seem to get better.”

Roden purchased Anothertwistafate for Redekop for $360,000 at the 2018 OBS June sale, just a week after Scat Daddy's Justify completed his Triple Crown sweep in the GI Belmont S. The handsome colt won the 2020 GIII Longacres Mile H. and this year's GII San Gabriel S. Ajourneytofreedom was purchased for $180,000 at the 2019 OBS April sale just as his half-brother was making a push towards that year's Classics.

Hip 418 RNA'd for $345,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale following a furlong work in :10 3/5. She worked a quarter-mile in :21 1/5 ahead of the June sale.

“I didn't see her at Gulfstream,” Roden said. “I saw the breeze and it wasn't the best of breezes, but Ciaran told me what his theory was. He's a good guy and we like buying off of him and his whole team over there. The breeze here was pheneomonal. We are happy to get her.”

Of the filly's experience at Gulfstream, Dunne said, “It was probably trainer/consignor error. We were very high on the filly earlier in the year, but she was immature mentally and physically. And in hindsight, I should have just waited and gone to April with her. She was a filly who always needed to go a quarter, she was very keen and anxious to please. In Miami, she was a little bit frenzied. Whereas here, going a quarter, she had the time to level out and smooth out. The farther she went here, the better she got.”

The dark bay filly's dam Imprecation is a daughter of group winner Media Nox (GB) (Lycius) and is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Nebraska Tornado (Storm Cat), group winner Burning Sun (Danzig) and group-placed Mirabilis (Lear Fan).

Prentice purchased the mare for $223,246 at the 2013 Tattersalls December sale.

“It's a beautiful family,” Dunne said. “It's a family that has been good to us as sellers and to Mr. Prentice as a breeder. We sold Anothertwistafate in June, so maybe that's where that family has to go, June instead of Gulfstream.”

Of similarities between the siblings, Dunne said, “I think she is a mare who really throws to a stallion. Anothertwistafate was as pretty a horse as we ever had. Tall and elegant, he had that long Scat Daddy look to him. This filly here, you can really see the Dialed In and a little bit of Mineshaft. So I think she's a mare who really throws to the stallion. And the Hard Spun was different to the two of them again. But all of them are really good training horses. Hopefully she is as successful as her two brothers. If she is, it's a wonderful pedigree.”

Glassmans Strike for Hard Spun Colt

Karl and Cathi Glassman struck midway through Thursday's second session of the OBS June sale to acquire a colt by Hard Spun (hip 506) for $335,000 from the Eisaman Equine consignment. The bay colt will be trained by Maryland-based conditioner Brittany Russell.

“I trust everything that Barry Eisaman does,” Karl Glassman said when asked about the juvenile's appeal. “So Barry's background had a lot to do with it.”

The bay colt, who worked a furlong in :10 3/5 during last week's under-tack show, is out of the unraced Lovisa (Speightstown), a half-sister to stakes winner High Noon Rider (Distorted Humor) and stakes winner and group-placed Poupee Flash (Elusive Quality). His third dam is Chimes of Freedom (Private Account), who produced champion Aldebaran and Grade I winner Good Journey.

“The Hard Spuns are just good, durable horses, so I know that he's not going to be real precocious,” Glassman said. “Genetically, he looks like he should be a two-turn runner. We are patient. The horse's welfare is what is most important to us. and I know Barry and Shari have done a great job taking care of him.”

The Eisamans purchased the colt for $100,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

Glassman is chairman and chief executive officer of the Missouri-based Leggett & Platt, a diversified manufacturer of various components and products.

The couple, who split their time between Florida and Missouri, have campaigned stakes winner April Gaze (High Cotton) and stakes placed Restofthestory (Jess's Dream).

Of their current racing stable, Glassman said, “Brad Cox has three, Eddie Plesa has nine and now Brittany will have four.”

Pegasus Turf Is Another Twist In The Story For Anothertwistafate

Both the blinkers and the man who suggested them – jockey Joel Rosario – will be on Anothertwistafate Saturday in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational Turf (G1) at Gulfstream Park.

Following Anothertwistafate's fourth-place finish in the Seabiscuit Handicap (G2) on Nov. 28 at Del Mar, Rosario recommended adding blinkers to the horse's new trainer, Peter Miller. Five weeks later, with blinkers in place, Anothertwistafate and Rosario rolled to a 2 ¼-length victory in the San Gabriel (G2) at Santa Anita.

Miller chuckled as he told the story about his conversation with Rosario after the Seabiscuit.

“When he tells you something you listen,” Miller said. “He's one of the jocks that I really respect his opinion. When he tells you something he's right most of the time.”

The San Gabriel victory was the first on turf for the 5-year-old owned by Peter Redekop and gave him stakes wins on all three surfaces: synthetics, dirt and grass. It was another significant step forward for the Anothertwistafate, who was away from the races for 16 months following the 2019 Preakness (G1), and earned him invitations to both of the major races on the Pegasus program. His connections opted for the 1 3/16 miles Turf.

Redekop purchased Anothertwistafate for $360,000 as a 2-year-old in 2018 and sent him to trainer Blaine Wright, who operates stables at Golden Gate Fields in Northern California and Emerald Downs in Washington state. Wright developed the colt into a stakes winner and guided him to the Preakness, where he finished 10th. Following the extended layoff to recover from surgeries and setbacks, Wright prepped him on works to win the Longacres Mile (G3) on Sept. 10 at Emerald Downs. With the graded stakes on dirt on his resume, Anothertwistafate was part of a group of a half-dozen Redekop horses moved to Miller's barn on the more-lucrative Southern California circuit.

“Mr. Redekop and his racing manager, Dr. Bryan Anderson, wanted to try him on the grass because he's got a grass pedigree being by Scat Daddy,” Miller said. “He also was 3-for-3 on synthetic, which can portend to success on the grass. When they sent him to me they wanted to try him on the grass and it's been so far, so good.”

Right from the start of the experiment, Miller was confident that Anothertwistafate could handle the surface switch.

“Once we breezed him on the grass at Del Mar you could tell that he dug it,” Miller said.

Redekop was born in a Mennonite colony in 1935 in what is now the Ukraine. The family faced oppression for its religious beliefs and was displaced to Germany at the end of World War II. After spending some time in the Netherlands, the family emigrated to Canada, arriving in Winnipeg in December 1948. Four months later, Redekop and his family moved further west to British Columbia. In partnership with his cousin, Peter Wall, Redekop became a very successful real estate developer in Vancouver. Redekop and Wall purchased their first race horses in 1968 and Redekop has been so successful in the sport in the province that he is a member of British Columbia's racing Hall of Fame.

When Justify, bred by Vancouver resident John Gunther and his daughter Tanya, won the 2018 Triple Crown, Redekop decided to buy a horse by Justify's late sire, Scat Daddy. Thirteen days after Justify won the Belmont Stakes, Redekop purchased his Scat Daddy at the Ocala Breeders' Sale.

The colt was named after the song “Simple Twist of Fate” from Bob Dylan's 1975 album Blood on the Tracks. Redekop's racing manager Bryan Anderson, his wife Carol and their daughter Victoria collaborate on the naming of the horses in the stable. Anderson said that Simple Twist of Fate was a name already registered with The Jockey Club. Since Redekop prefers that his horses have names that start with the letter “A”, making them easier to find on the workout lists, the Anderson team developed a variation to Simple Twist of Fate.

Anothertwistafate had a troubled trip in his career debut on Nov. 3, 2018 at Santa Anita and ended up a well-beaten ninth. Wright took him back to Golden Gate Fields, where he won his next three starts on the synthetic track by a combined 16 lengths. The third of those wins, the El Camino Real Derby, earned him an automatic berth in the Preakness. He ran second by a neck in the Sunland Park Derby (G3) and second by a 1 ¾ lengths in the Lexington (G3) at Keeneland and ended up short of qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby.

After the Preakness, he did not compete again until his facile score in the Longacres Mile.

“He's traveling great right now,” Miller said. “He came to me in great shape from Blaine Wright. He's maintained that level of health and soundness.”

Anothertwistafate has won five of 10 lifetime starts and has earned $490,505 in a career spread over four seasons.

“He's really a talented horse,” Miller said. “If he continues to put it together, like he did in his last race, I can certainly see, if he stayed sound, some big races in his future. Hopefully, maybe, the Breeders' Cup at the end of the year.”
