San Clemente Top Three Meet Euro Pair in Del Mar Oaks

The first three finishers from the local GII San Clemente S. will reconvene in Saturday’s GI Del Mar Oaks with a pair of Group winners from Europe shipping in to spice things up in the nine-furlong test for 3-year-old turf fillies.

Of the local hopes, San Clemente victress Laura’s Light (Constitution) figures to take the most play as she tries to make it six wins in eight career outings. A debut winner sprinting on the all-weather at Golden Gate last November, the bay was privately purchased by Gary Barber out of that effort and transferred to Peter Miller’s barn. Runner-up at 24-1 in the GIII Jimmy Durante S., she annexed the Blue Norther S. and GIII Sweet Life S. over the winter at Santa Anita before fading to fourth at odds-on in the Bourbonette Oaks Mar. 14 at Turfway. Back on turf in the GIII Honeymoon S. going this distance May 30 in Arcadia, she tracked a runoff leader from second, overtook that one in the stretch and held gamely late to prevail before tracking a fast pace and triumphing by three-quarters of a length last out.

Attempting to reel her in that day were Guitty (Fr) (Dunkerque {Fr}) and Warren’s Showtime (Clubhouse Ride). The former, who won her first two American starts after shipping in from her native lane, was off the board in four straight efforts before completing the exacta at 19-1 in the San Clemente. The latter, victress of the Surfer Girl S. and China Doll S. going a mile on the Santa Anita lawn, added the California-bred Melair S. over dirt before closing from last to finish 1 1/4 lengths behind Laura’s Light.

Miss Extra (Fr) (Masterstroke) took five tries to get off the mark in her home country before doing so at 11-1 against males May 11 at Longchamp. Repeating in the Prix de Lilas at Deauville 20 days later, the bay made it three in a row in the G2 Prix de Sandringham June 19 at Chantilly before finding Group 1 waters a bit too deep when ninth in the Prix de Diane Longines there July 5.

The progressive Neige Blanche (Fr) (Anodin {Ire}) also makes her Stateside bow. Graduating second out over the boys on Marseille’s synthetic surface last November, she repeated in an allowance there Dec. 26 and was third two starts later in her turf debut, the Prix Caravelle May 11 at Toulouse. Stepping into Group company, she captured the G3 Prix Cleopatre at 10-1 going 1 3/8 miles over soft ground last out June 6 at Lyon-Parilly.

French Pair Among 10 Rivals For Laura’s Light In Del Mar Oaks

Eleven 3-year-old fillies will test their mettle over nine furlongs on the Del Mar turf course Saturday in Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks, a key race on a five-stakes program offering more than $1-million in purse money at the seaside oval north of San Diego, Calif.

The $250,000 Oaks, which starts out of the diagonal infield chute, will have its 64th running and goes as race No. 9 on the 11-race card.

The likely favorite in the highly sought lawn test is Gary Barber's Laura's Light, a daughter of Constitution who has won five of her seven lifetime starts, including a last-out tally in the one-mile, Grade 2 San Clemente Stakes on the Del Mar grass July 25, a race considered the key prep for the Del Mar Oaks. Trainer Peter Miller's bay filly was ridden that day by Abel Cedillo and the Guatemalan jockey is back aboard Saturday. They'll break from Post 10 and carry 122 pounds, just as all runners in the race do.

Here's the complete field for the Oaks from the rail out with riders and morning line odds:

MyRacehorsecom or Platts' Carpe Vinum (Aaron Gryder, 15-1); Barber or Wachtel Stable's California Kook (Edwin Maldonado, 15-1); Jathiere or Lazare's Miss Extra (Umberto Rispoli, 9/2); Benjamin and Sally Warren's Warren's Showtime (Mike Smith, 6-1); Calvin Nguyen's Aqua Seaform Shame (Ruben Fuentes, 12-1); What Time Is It Racing's Trickle In (Ricardo Gonzalez, 12-1); Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners' Red Lark (Drayden Van Dyke, 12-1); Madaket Stables, DeSeroux or Naif's Neige Blanche (Flavien Prat, 5-1); L N J Foxwoods' Parkour (Giovanni Franco, 15-1); Laura's Light, and Benowitz Family Trust and Madaket Stables' Guitty (Juan Hernandez, 8-1).

Chief threats to Laura's Light are a pair of French fillies who'll be making their U.S. debuts in the nine-panel showdown. Miss Extra, a bay by Masterstroke, last raced on July 5 at Chantilly, the French racecourse about 30 miles north of Paris. The bay has won three of her four starts this year, including the Group 2 Prix de Sandringham at Chantilly on June 18 at a mile on turf. Trainer Richard Mandella is listed as her conditioner for the Oaks.

Neige Blanche is in the barn of the American-based, French-born trainer Leonard Powell. Her last outing was on June 6 at Lyon-Parilly near Lyon in the central part of France. She won the Group 3 Prix Cleopatre that day, her third victory in her sixth lifetime start.

Powell also trains Guitty, who was second to Laura's Light in the San Clemente after having to take the overland for the last three-eighths of a mile. She shows two wins and two seconds from eight lifetime outings.

Warren's Showtime had a taste of bad racing luck in the stretch in finishing third in the San Clemente. The chestnut homebred by Clubhouse Ride has won five of 11 races and has earnings of $430,251. She won four minor stakes and will be making her first Grade I appearance Saturday.

First post Saturday will be 2 p.m.

Wide-Open Lineup Of Seven Fillies Entered For Friday’s Sorrento

In what appears to be a wide-open edition of the Grade II, $150,000 Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar, seven fillies will face starter Jay Slender Friday for a six-furlong tussle that will reward the one home first with a nice payday, a chunk of black type and a leg up toward the meet's top prize for 2-year-old distaff runners — the $250,000, Grade I Del Mar Debutante on Sunday, September 6.

The 52nd running of the race features a trio of local juveniles who all scored their maiden victories last out; a trio of out-of-town runners who also scored their maiden victories last out, and a first-time starter who drew a big price at a 2-year-olds in training sale and has been working steadily toward her debut.

Here's the lineup from the rail out with riders:

Reddam Racing's Get On the Bus, Mario Gutierrez up; Kagele or Shaw's September Secret, Abel Cedillo; Tricar Stables' Exchange Vows, Assael Espinoza; Erich Brehm's My Girl Red, Flavien Prat; Chapman or Tsujimoto's Trip to Seoul, Edwin Maldonado; Chapman or Biddinger's Scaterra, Umberto Rispoli, and Chapman Or Tsujimoto's Scat's Choice, J.C. Diaz, Jr.

The three locals have the benefit of both experience and a feel for the Del Mar strip. In September Secret's case that is especially so in that she won a $50,000 maiden-claiming race at the shore oval on July 24 and now is wheeled back just over two weeks later for her stakes debut. She's a California-bred by Grazen and is trained by Peter Miller.

My Girl Red, bred by her owner and sired by Texas Red, a horse Keith Desormeaux – My Girl Red's conditioner – also trained, comes off a four and a half-length score at Santa Anita in a straight maiden race on June 14. Leading rider Flavien Prat chooses to stay with her for her stakes debut.

Exchange Vows won by three in a $50,000 maiden-claimer at Los Alamitos on July 2. She's turned in three five-furlong works at Del Mar since.

The trio of out-of-towners are part-owned and trained by James Chapman. Trip to Seoul scored her first victory at Mountaineer Park in West Virginia; Scaterra broke through in her first attempt at Arlington Park outside Chicago, and Scat's Choice was a winner at Belterra Park in Cincinnati.

The first-timer fetched $340,000 at the Ocala Breeders' Sale in March after working an eighth of a mile in :10.1. She's by the top stallion Uncle Mo and has had a series of steady works for his stakes – and racing – bow.

Laura’s Light Wins Del Mar’s San Clemente As Heavy Favorite

Gary Barber's favored Laura's Light made the lead turning for home on the turf course, then held off the late charges of two rivals to tally by three-quarters of a length in Saturday's Grade 2, $150,000 San Clemente Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Del Mar near San Diego, Calif.

Laura's LIght's rider was Abel Cedillo, who wound up capturing three races on the afternoon's 11-race card, including the G2 San Diego Handicap aboard Maximum Security.

Laura's Light, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Constitution, covered the mile on the greensward in 1:34.16 and paid $4.40, $3.00 and $2.60 as the 6/5 favorite in the field of 10 runners. She earned $90,000 for the victory and now sports a bankroll of $304,370.

Trained by Peter Miller, Laura's Light was winning for the fifth time in seven career starts. She was coming off a hard-fought victory in the Honeymoon Stakes on turf at Santa Anita on May 30 — her second G3 win this year.

Both of the Grade 2 races run Saturday are considered key preps for Grade 1 races later in the meet – the $500,000 TVG Pacific Classic in the case of Maximum Security and the $250,000 Del Mar Oaks for Laura's Light. Each of those races will be run at Del Mar on August 22 as part of a five-stakes program and both winning trainers today gave indications that their charges would be pointed in that direction.

Earlier on the card in the $65,000 Smiling Tiger Overnight Stakes, MyRacehorse.com and Slam Dunk Racing's Vertical Threat outran three foes to score by five and a quarter lengths under Heriberto Figueroa.  The 3-year-old colt trained by Richard Baltas ran six furlongs in 1:10.47.

Racing resumes at Del Mar tomorrow with an 11-race card beginning at 2 p.m.
