Twirling Candy Colt Rallies to Rising Stardom as Bezos Fails to Deliver

Exline-Border Racing LLC, SAF Racing & Richard Hausman's Dream Shake (Twirling Candy), completely ignored at 20-1 while facing an extremely tough-looking group of Santa Anita sophomores led by Bob Baffert hype horse Bezos (Empire Maker), whipped around the turn and ran up the score to snag 'TDN Rising Star' honors. The dark bay, who was a $32,000 KEESEP yearling turned $75,000 OBSAPR buy off a :10.1 breeze, sported an unassuming worktab on paper capped by a 1:01 flat (11/64) spin a week earlier (XBTV video) for a typically patient barn.

Away well from his outside draw, Dream Shake was outsprinted by almost all of them early as Baffert's other runner Tivoli Twirl (Twirling Candy) showed the way with Bezos not far behind. He began to inch closer while four deep around the turn, and had caught up to the leaders as a :46.19 half was posted. The early pacesetters came up empty in the lane, but Dream Shake continued to kick on powerfully, scampering away 4 3/4 lengths to the good of second timer Harbored Memories (Harbor the Gold). Bezos checked in seventh, two spots ahead of Tivoli Twirl in last.

“The things that he did in his first half miles were quite impressive, but we never really tested him, we've always worked him against mediocrity most of the time and he's done that pretty easily, so we were all optimistic about him, but you really don't know until you put 'em in the gate against the quality [competition] that we had today,” said winning trainer Peter Eurton. “Against a field of this stature today, I would've been happy with anything fourth and above. Now that he's done this, it's just a question of how he comes back. I think anything further, seven furlongs to a mile, would be very good. We'll just try to enjoy this for now, but trust me, we'll probably be looking for a race before the evening has ended.”

Dream Shake is a grandson of GSW Brownie Points (Forest Wildcat), who also produced MGSW near millionaire Synchrony (Tapit) and GSW Chocolate Kisses (Candy Ride {Arg}).Dam Even Song (Street Cry {Ire}) has a 2-year-old filly by Astern (Aus).

Bernardini Filly Blossoms Around Two Turns at Santa Anita

2nd-Santa Anita, $59,780, Msw, 2-5, 3yo, f, 1m, 1:39.09, ft, 18 lengths.
LADY MYSTIFY (f, 3, Bernardini–J. Quirk, by Unbridled's Song) took to two turns to say the least Saturday in Arcadia. A close second at 15-1 going 5 1/2 furlongs at Los Alamitos Dec. 5, the bay was third over an additional sixteenth here Jan. 10. Backed at 3-2 getting more ground to work with, the bay beat her three foes to the lead and zipped along through splits of :22.85 and :46.43. She blew the race apart around the home bend, and found no competition from there as at least two of her rivals seemed to struggle with the distance. American Heights (American Pharoah) was best of the rest. The winner hails from the extended female family of Tiznow. MGSW Giant Expectations Retired

Dual graded stakes winner Giant Expectations (Frost Giant–Sarahisittrue, by Is It True) has been retired from racing and will stand the upcoming breeding season at a location still to be determined pending sale of the horse either privately or at auction.

Giant Expectations was trained by Eurton for Exline-Border Racing, David Bernsen, Gatto Racing, and partners, who issued a release: “The current ownership group and management unanimously elected to retire Giant Expectations in the best interests of the horse, and are excited to follow his next career as a stallion.”

In a career that spanned five seasons and 25 starts, the earner of $1,343,600 hit the board in 13 starts, including wins in the 2017 seven-panel GII Pat O’Brien S. and 2017 8 1/2-furlong

GII San Antonio S., the latter victory a gate-to-wire effort defeating Eclipse Award 2018 champion Accelerate (Lookin At Lucky) and Grade I winners Collected (City Zip) and Hopportunity (Any Given Saturday).

“Giant Expectations was one of the best horses I had the pleasure to ride over my career,” said Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens, who was in the irons for some of Giant’s biggest races including both the Pat O’Brien and San Antonio wins. “He was a great looking horse, with the stride and the movement to go

with it, long and fluid..a beautiful stride and a powerful stretch run.”

Added trainer Peter Eurton, “He’s always had tremendous speed, stamina, and resilience. He’s a perfectly built horse. Very sound and a gorgeous individual.”

“This is the type of horse you miss the most when they leave,” said Eurton. “Anybody who breeds to him is going to be very happy.”

Grade 2 Winner Giant Expectations Retired; Stud Plans Pending

Multiple graded stakes winner and millionaire Giant Expectations has been retired from racing with career earnings of $1,343,600. He will begin his next career at stud this upcoming breeding season, with the location still to be determined pending sale of the horse, either privately or at auction.

In a career that spanned five seasons and 25 starts, Giant Expectations consistently raced at the highest level from coast to coast. His ability to show tactical speed, both sprinting and routing, set him apart with wins in both the Grade 2 Pat O'Brien Stakes at seven furlongs and against a historically tough field for the G2 San Antonio Stakes at 1 1/16 miles, winning gate-to-wire and defeating 2018 Eclipse Award winner Accelerate, as well as Grade 1 winners Collected and Hoppertunity.
