Lady Mystify on Top in Remington Oaks

Lady Mystify came from just off the pace to score an easy victory in the GIII Remington Park Oaks Sunday night. The bay filly, who had set the pace in her last three outings, was caught some three wide into the first turn and continued three wide down the backstretch while always within striking distance as My Girl Red (Texas Red) took the field through fractions of :23.60 and :47.29. Lady Mystify rolled up to grab the lead approaching the top of the stretch and was shadowed by Pauline's Pearl. She easily dispatched of that foe and strode clear as Pauline's Pearl just held off favored Amendment Nineteen despite drifting out and forcing that rival to angle in in deep stretch.

“We had a good trip,” said winning jockey Flavien Prat. “She broke well and it was nice to see her relax on the backside and take a breather and she responded for me down the lane. She always showed some talent and it was good to see her relax today.”

Stretched out to a mile in her third start, Lady Mystify romped home by 18 lengths Feb. 5. She returned five months later to win a one-mile allowance at Del Mar July 29, but faded to fifth after bleeding without Lasix in the Aug. 21 GIII Torrey Pine S.

Pedigree Notes:

Scott and Evan Dilworth purchased J. Quirk, in foal to Tiznow, for $260,000 at the 2016 Keeneland November sale. Her 2-year-old Beat Emotion (Quality Road), purchased for $190,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale, sold through Steve Venosa's SGV Thoroughbreds for $600,000 at this year's Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale.

J. Quirk produced a filly by Gun Runner this year and was bred back to Game Winner.

Lady Mystify's third dam, Cee's Song, produced champion Tiznow and multiple graded winner Budroyale, as well as the dam of Grade I winner Paynter and the dam of GI Preakness S. winner Oxbow.

Lady Mystify Gets First Graded Stakes Win In Remington Park Oaks

Lady Mystify made the trip from California to Oklahoma a winning one with a pace-stalking performance in the Grade 3 Remington Park Oaks at the Oklahoma City, Okla., track.

In her only previous try at graded stakes company, Lady Mystify, trained by Peter Eurton, was fifth in the Grade 3 Torrey Pines at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif. in late August. In the G3 Oaks, facing a field that included G3 Fantasy Stakes winner Pauline's Pearl and Cathryn Sophia Stakes winner Lovely Ride, Lady Mystify broke cleanly, jockey Flavien Prat putting her third behind front-runner My Girl Red early in the 1 1/16-mile stakes.

Around the far turn, Prat pulled his filly even with My Girl Red as Ricardo Santana, Jr. moved Pauline's Pearl on the outside of horses to start her bid in the stretch. At the top of the lane, Lady Mystify took over the lead as Pauline's Pearl tried to challenge on her outside. The Eurton trainee was too much for Pauline's Pearl, drawing away to win by three lengths. Amendment Nineteen was third and Bobbin Tail fourth.

The final time for the G3 Remington Park Oaks was 1:44.13. Find this race's chart here.

Lady Mystify paid $14.00, $5.00, and $2.80. Pauline's Pearl paid $2.80 and $2.10. Amendment Nineteen paid $2.10.

Bred in Kentucky by Scott Dilworth and Evan Dilworth, Lady Mystify is by Bernardini out of the Unbridled's Song mare J. Quirk. She is a 3-year-old filly owned by Exline-Border Racing LLC, SAF Racing, and Richard Hausman. Lady Mystify was purchased by Exline-Border Racing from consigner Niall Brennan Stables for $325,000 at the 2020 Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training. With her win in the G3 Remington Park Oaks, Lady Mystify has three wins in five starts in 2021, for a lifetime record of 6-3-1-1 and career earnings of $217,520.

Unbeaten Soothsay Faces Crazy Beautiful In Sunday’s Summertime Oaks

Richard Mandella's talented Soothsay, unbeaten in two starts, heads Sunday's Grade 2, $200,000 Summertime Oaks at Santa Anita. To be contested a mile and one sixteenth, the Summertime Oaks has attracted a field of five sophomore fillies.

Kenny McPeek-trained Grade 2 stakes winner Crazy Beautiful, who ships west from her Churchill Downs base, and Peter Eurton's sharp recent stakes winner Lady Aces, could both prove formidable in a race that doesn't appear to have an abundance of early pace.

Ridden by leading man Flavien Prat in both of her starts, Soothsay rallied from off the pace to win her six furlong debut by 1 ½ lengths on Feb. 26 and then had the look of something very special indeed when she dominated the Grade 2 Santa Anita Oaks on April, winning by a half length at 1 1/16 miles.

By Distorted Humor out of the Bernardini mare Spellbound, Soothsay is owned by Claiborne Farm, Perry Bass, Ramona Bass and Adele Dilschneider. Unbeaten in her two starts, she earned a lofty 87 Beyer Speed figure in her most recent start and appears to have any kind of future.

Devoid of early foot, Crazy Beautiful rallied from off the pace to register an impressive 2 ¼ length win in the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks two starts back on March 27. Subsequently 10th in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks April 30, this Kentucky-bred daughter of Liam's Map will try to bounce back in her Southern California debut.

Owned by Phoenix Thoroughbred III, Crazy Beautiful, who took a seven furlong ungraded stakes at Ellis Park in her second start on Aug. 9, 2020, is 8-3-3-0 overall and is the leading money earner in the field with $400,865. Ridden by Jose Ortiz in her last two starts, Crazy Beautiful will get the first-time services of Mike Smith on Sunday.

Owned and bred in Maryland by C R K Stable, LLC, Lady Aces rallied for an emphatic 3 ½ length maiden score going six furlongs here on May 2 and may well employ front-running tactics as she stretches out for the first time in what will be her third start.

Out of the Pleasantly Perfect mare Economy of Motion, Lady Aces will be ridden for the first time by Umberto Rispoli, as Prat opts to stick with the top selection.

Allowance Winner Lambeau Faces Comebacking Eight Rings In Triple Bend

Fresh off a rousing gate to wire allowance win at one mile, the John Shirreffs-trained Lambeau is well positioned to make his stakes debut as he cuts back to a sprint for the first time in his career in Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 Triple Bend Stakes at Santa Anita.

Originally run at Hollywood Park, the Triple Bend will be run for the 70th time on Saturday as a field of five older horses will compete at seven furlongs.

In a wide open affair, Bob Baffert's Eight Rings and Peter Eurton's Exaulted would both also appear to have big chances.

Owned by Jerome S. Moss, Lambeau, a 5-year-old full horse by First Samurai, was off at 16-1 in a second condition allowance on April 10 and he led every step of the way to win by one length when ridden for the first time by Edwin Maldonado, who rides him back in the Triple Bend. A winner of three out of his seven starts, Lambeau is untested at the trip and level, but has never been better.

A runaway winner of the Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes at age two in September, 2019, Eight Rings has been idle since well beaten in the Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens Stakes going seven furlongs at Saratoga on Aug. 1. With an outstanding work tab to his credit, Eight Rings will be ridden for the first time by Flavien Prat in what will be his seventh career start.

A 4-year-old colt by Empire Maker out of the Pure Prize mare Purely Hot, Eight Rings is owned by Coolmore Stud, Golconda Stable, Madaket Stables, LLC, SF Racing, LLC and Starlight Racing.

Third, beaten four lengths by runaway winner Brickyard Ride in the Grade 2 San Carlos Stakes at seven furlongs March 6, Exaulted rates a huge chance and will be ridden for the first time by Abel Cedillo. A 4-year-old colt by Twirling Candy, out of the Gilded Time mare Gilded Miracle., Exaulted is owned by C R K Stable and has trained well since the San Carlos, evidenced by a pair of bullet five furlong works on May 8 and May 15.
