Original Prevails In Manila Stakes on Belmont Turf

Eric Fein's Original picked up his first stakes win in Sunday's $100,000 Manila, holding off a furious late rally from Public Sector in the one-mile Widener turf test for sophomores at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

The graded stakes-placed Quality Road colt turned the tables on his rival Sunday after fading to third last out when Public Sector prevailed in a one-mile optional-claiming event contested over yielding turf on June 4 at Belmont.

With Luis Saez up once more in the seventh renewal of the Manila, Original broke alertly from post 4 and made all the running, holding off even-money favorite Public Sector's late run to secure a narrow head score.

“I saw him [Public Sector] coming,” said Original trainer John Terranova. “But Luis rode him beautiful and had a little clearance coming to the top of the stretch and was able to hold on.”

Original set splits of :24.85, :50.30, and 1:14.44 over a turf course rated good with It's a Gamble stalking from second position outside of Hot Blooded and a hard-held Straw Into Gold riding the hedge in fourth.

Public Sector, who settled in fifth after the break under Flavien Prat, tipped outside of Hot Blooded and the fading It's a Gamble late in the turn as Straw Into Gold launched his bid up the rail. But there was no reeling in Original, who stayed on stubbornly to secure the win in a final time of 1:37.75.

Public Sector completed the exacta by 1 1/2-lengths over Straw Into Gold. Rounding out the order of finish were It's a Gamble, the slow-starting Annex, and Hot Blooded.

Like the King, who ran second in Saturday's Grade 3 Kent at Delaware Park; and Ridin With Biden, who will race in Monday's $250,000 Grade 3 Dwyer at one-mile on Big Sandy, were scratched.

A maiden winner at second asking over yielding Aqueduct Racetrack turf in November, Original ran third in the Grade 3 Kitten's Joy in January at Gulfstream Park and followed with a third in the Woodhaven in April at the Big A.

The victory marked the second stakes win of the meet for Terranova, who said he felt confident throughout.

“I knew we were going easy. The fractions were slow but the turf is very soft, so I didn't expect too fast fractions,” said Terranova. “They let him out there easy. The only thing we talked to Luis about was if they came to us at the quarter-pole, to kick away a little, because they're going to be kicking down the stretch. We wanted to get a little clear from there, which he did, and it worked out beautiful.”

Saez said his charge was touting himself on the way to the gate.

“Today, I knew I had horse. When I took him away from the pony I could feel it. He was ready. He was on his game today,” said Saez. “He was the speed of the race and he did his thing. He broke pretty well and set the pace. When we came into the top of the stretch, I had a lot of horse, and he came and gave me a fight in the last few jumps. It was an exciting race.”

Bred in Kentucky by Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds, Original banked $55,000 in victory while improving his record to 7-2-0-3. He returned $15.80 for a $2 win ticket.

Live racing resumes Monday at Belmont with a nine-race card highlighted by the $150,000 Grand Couturier in Race 6 and the Grade 3, $250,000 Dwyer in Race 8. First post is 1 p.m. Eastern.

Leading North American Breeders For 2020: A Different Take

Last week, The Jockey Club released its list of leading North American Thoroughbred breeders for 2020, proclaiming Calumet Farm as the top breeder for the second year in a row.

Sure enough, the historic Lexington, Ky., farm owned since 2012 by reclusive billionaire Brad Kelley was atop the list of individual breeders with more than $9.7 million in 2020 North American earnings by horses it bred. If you take partnerships into account, Kenny Troutt's WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky. – second behind Calumet on the individual list – was the North American leader with $11.7 million in earnings.

I don't judge the quality of restaurants or decide where to eat by looking at who generates the most revenue. If I did, I'd wind up at McDonald's three meals a day. So it stands to reason that there must be another way to look at this year-end list, which includes statistics for the top 100 breeders by North American earnings. The data includes starters, starts, wins, seconds, thirds, earnings and black type stakes winners.

I took the liberty of adding a few statistical columns that provide some context to the leading breeders list, including average number of starts per starter, percentage of wins from starts, average earnings per start and percentage of black type winners from starters.

The list below (which excluded a handful of breeders with fewer than five starters each) ranks North American breeders by average earnings per start. Topping the list in this category is Knowles Bloodstock ($55,847 per start), which had just six starters but included Grade 2 Louisiana Derby winner Wells Bayou among them. Second is Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds, whose $22,705 average was buoyed considerably by the $7,170,000 earned by probable Horse of the Year Authentic.

Ranked 74th on the list of leading breeders by average earnings per start is Calumet Farm, whose 479 runners averaged $3,776 per start. WinStar Farm, with 214 starters, ranks 19th nationally with $8,122 earnings per start – more than twice that of Calumet.

Another way of looking at excellence in breeding is black type winners. Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin and Barbara Banke's Stonestreet led the way with each breeding 13 North American stakes winners. WinStar and Calumet were next with 10 each.

If you look at the list by percentage of black type winners from starters (minimum five starters), Knowles Bloodstock again leads the way with 33.33% (2-of-6), followed by China Horse Club International Ltd, with 16.67% (4-of-24).

Stonestreet ranks ninth by percentage of stakes winners from starters, at 8.55%, with Godolphin 12th at 8.02%. WinStar Farm is 33rd at 4.67% and Calumet Farm is 62nd at 2.09%.

So who was the top North American breeder in 2020? If you go by quantity, it's Calumet, which had 75% more starters than runner-up WinStar Farm. In my opinion, quality trumps quantity.

Category leaders listed in bold/italics.

Flawless, Dam Of Breeders’ Cup Classic Winner Authentic, Supplemented Into Fasig-Tipton November Sale

Flawless, the dam of Breeders' Cup Classic winner and Kentucky Derby winner Authentic, has been supplemented to Sunday's Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Cataloged as Hip 288, she will be consigned by Bridie Harrison, agent for Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds.

A daughter of Mr. Greeley, Flawless is in foal to Into Mischief on a Feb. 18 cover carrying a full sibling to Authentic.

Authentic has captured six of eight career starts to date at two and three, including three Grade 1 wins in 2020 — the Haskell Stakes, the Kentucky Derby, and Saturday's Breeders' Cup Classic over one of the deepest fields in the history of the race. He went gate-to-wire to defeat Grade 1 winners Improbable, Global Campaign, Maximum Security, Tiz the Law, Tom's d'Etat, and Higher Power by 2 1/4 lengths in a track record time of 1:59.19 for the mile-and-a-quarter. He is a five-time graded stakes winner of $6,191,200.

Flawless hails from a deep female family of top producers, including Holiday Runner, the dam or granddam of Grade 1 winners Seventh Street, Reynaldothewizard, and American Gal.

“Flawless is an exciting late addition to our November Sale,” said Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning. “Authentic is just the fourth horse ever to win the Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic in the same year, and she is carrying his full sibling. To be able to add a mare of Flawless's qualifications to our sale on the eve of the auction is unprecedented and provides buyers one of the more unique buying opportunities in recent memory.”

The Fasig-Tipton November Sale will be conducted Nov. 8 beginning at 2 p.m. in Lexington, Ky. Online bidding and phone bidding are available.
