Curlin Colt Turns In ‘Jazzy’ Effort at Belmont

MILES D (c, 3, Curlin–Sound the Trumpets, by Bernardini) made a single visit to the races last season, a well-bet and close-up fourth at Aqueduct Oct. 11, in an event that has turned out to be no ordinary maiden. Next-out 'TDN Rising Star' and Smarty Jones S. winner Caddo River (Hard Spun) was runner-up to Godophin's Speaker's Corner (Street Sense) and a half-length better than Greatest Honour (Tapit), who would go on to annex the GIII Holy Bull S. and GII Fountain of Youth S. ahead of a third in the GI Curlin Florida Derby. Behind Miles D that day were the sixth-placed Bourbonic (Bernardini), this year's GII Wood Memorial S. upsetter, as well as Original (Quality Road), last of the octet, but since Grade III-placed on the turf. The late money came for Miles D, who was sent off the 1.15-1 chalk in advance of 8-5 fellow second-timer Southern Flag (Union Rags), and proved spot on. Sound the Trumpets's 2-year-old son Trumpets Blare (Pioneerof the Nile) breezed three-eighths of a mile in :37.40 at the Skylight Training CenterSaturday morning and her most recent produce include a yearling Quality Road filly and a colt foal by Medaglia d'Oro. Miles D's third dam was the irrepressible Personal Ensign (Private Account), who was also responsible for Grade I winners Miner's Mark (Mr. Prospector) and Traditionally (Mr. Prospector) as well as MGSP Salute (Unbridled), whose produce include Lane's End stallion and GISW Mr Speaker (Pulpit), GSW Fire Away (War Front) and SW/GSP Vigilantes Way (Medaglia d'Oro). Dylan Davis Wastes Little Time Winning First Day Back From Injury

Idle since suffering a broken clavicle at Aqueduct Racetrack on March 20, jockey Dylan Davis didn't waste any time finding the winner's circle on his first day back riding on Saturday at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J.

In his third mount since his return, the New York-based Davis guided Bottle Rocket Man to victory for Chad Brown in the seventh race.

“It's a mix of emotions – some relief, some excitement. It felt great,” said Davis. “First day back, I was anxious to get back in the winner's circle as quickly as I could and it felt great. To do it for Chad Brown is really special, too.”

Davis, who has 819 career victories, said for now he is “riding both tracks (Belmont and Monmouth Park).”

“Wherever I can get some mounts and get some winners,” he said. “My plans are fluid right now. It depends on which mounts I get at both tracks.

“But it feels so good to get that first one out of the way after being out for so long.”

‘Brown’ Can Spoil The ‘Party’ at Old Hilltop

Making the second start of his current form cycle and drawn perfectly to make best use of his primary asset, Somelikeithotbrown (Big Brown)–whose sire stormed home to win the 2008 GI Preakness S. by better than five lengths–can play the role of upsetter in Saturday's GII Dinner Party S. at Pimlico.

The New York-bred toyed with his rivals from the front to upset last year's GII Bernard Baruch S. at Saratoga, but was ridden from off the pace when this event was contested last October and settled for second. The coast-to-coast winner of the state-bred restricted Mohawk S. at Belmont three weeks later, he never attempted to lead in the GII Fort Lauderdale S. at Gulfstream Dec. 12 en route to beating just one rival home. In his lone start this term, he was narrowly in front in the GI Maker's Mark Mile after attending a sharp early tempo and weakened to finish seventh. Jose Ortiz should hit the gas early from gate one Saturday.

Chad Brown won his only Dinner Party in 2016 with Takeover Target (Harlan's Holiday), and will send out 7-5 morning-line choice Sacred Life (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) as well as the progressive Kuramata (Ire) (Australia {GB}). A Group 3 winner in France at two and runner-up to the mighty Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) at that level the following season, Sacred Life has two wins from eight starts in the U.S., his biggest success coming when overwhelming his rivals in last year's Oceanport S. at Monnmouth Aug. 9. A well-beaten fourth as the favorite in the GI Turf Classic at Churchill Sept. 5, he was suited by the strong pace of the Maker's Mark and ran on mildly from the back for third.

Kuramata, a homebred for Peter Brant, was third over the Kempton all-weather in a single European appearance in 2019, but broke his maiden by 3/4 of a length when making his stateside debut at Tampa Feb. 21 and was the smooth 2 1/2-length winner of an Apr. 2 first-level allowance over the Aqueduct turf to earn himself a crack at graded company.

Molto Bene! Brant Filly Races to ‘Rising Star’-dom

A 475,000gns Tattersalls October yearling purchase by Mike Ryan on behalf of owner Peter Brant, In Italian (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) was bet into 7-5 favoritism for her Mar. 28 bow at Tampa, but found trouble enough at the quarter pole and again 100 yards later to cost her a debut graduation.

Kicked immediately into the lead here by Irad Ortiz, Jr., In Italian enjoyed a fairly soft time of things on the engine, clocking unpressured fractions of :24.03 and :49.39. Challenged briefly approaching the stretch, In Italian rebroke and coasted home a 3 1/2-length winner as the 5-4 chalk.

In Italian, a half-sister to Villa Carlotta (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}), GSP-Aus; and Fasano (Aus) (Lonhro {Aus}), SP-Aus, was bred by John Camilleri's Fairway Thoroughbreds and her dam Florentina was bred back Southern Hemisphere time to Juddmonte stallion Kingman (GB) in September 2018 before returning to Australia. That produce, a colt foaled Aug. 2, 2019, sold to Tom Magnier for A$1.8m at the Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale this past January. Florentina returned to Banstead Manor to visit Kingman in the Northern Hemisphere autumn in 2019 and, returned to Australia, she was subsequently sold for A$650,000 at the 2020 Inglis Chairman's Sale last May. The most recent renewal of that auction took place just this past Friday, with Magnier striking the winning blow at A$2.5 million for G1SW Celebrity Queen (Aus) (Redoute's Choice {Aus}).

Florentina produced a filly last September and was bred back to 2019 The Everest winner Yes Yes Yes (Aus) (Rubick {Aus}). That foal will be inbred 4×3 to Shantha's Choice (Aus), the dam of In Italian's legendary broodmare sire, who also serves as the second dam of former 'TDN Rising Star' Rubick. Camilleri, a successful Australian businessman, has had much success breeding horses, but none more so than the irrepressible Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}).

In Italian is the 25th 'Rising Star' for her sire, a number that includes Peter Brant's Claiborne Farm-based Demarchelier (GB).
