All ‘Glory’ in the Matriarch

Regal Glory (Animal Kingdom), purchased by Peter Brant's White Birch Farm for $925,000 at this year's Keeneland January sale, went wire-to-wire to earn her first Grade I victory and give trainer Chad Brown and jockey Jose Ortiz their second graded winner on the closing-day card at Del Mar in the GI Matriarch S. Sunday. Sent off the 8-5 second choice, the 5-year-old chestnut mare rushed up from her outside post to grab the lead into the first turn. She was unchallenged and running freely through fractions of :24.06 and :48.50, skipped further clear on the far turn and was unchallenged to the wire.

“I thought I'd have the lead and thought I was the only real speed in the race,” Ortiz, who also rode the Brown-trained Verbal (Flintshire {GB}) to victory in the GIII Cecil B. DeMille S. Sunday, said. “The horse inside [Princess Grace] has speed, but when she used it last time, she didn't finish. So I thought I'd be out front and it worked out just that way. We got away with some easy fractions and then she had lots for the finish.”

The victory was Brown's fourth in the eight runnings of the Matriarch conducted at Del Mar.

“Just go to the lead. That's what my boss told the jockey,” said Brown's assistant Jose Hernandez. “That was the plan. She's a really nice filly and she did it all. They all [Chad Brown's seven horses to race at Del Mar over the holiday weekend] go back to Kentucky on Tuesday and then to Florida.”

The consistent Regal Glory, who has been first or second in all but three of her 16 lifetime starts, won the GIII Lake George S. and GII Lake Placid S. over the Saratoga lawn in 2019 and added a graded victory in the GIII Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf S. last September.

Purchased by Brant from the dispersal of the late Paul Pompa, Jr. at Keeneland in January, Regal Glory won the Apr. 11 Plenty o' Grace S. in her first start for her new owner. A troubled fourth in the June 5 GI Just a Game S., she returned to the winner's circle in the Aug. 8 De La Rose S. at Saratoga and she was coming off a runner-up effort behind stablemate Blowout (GB) (Dansili {GB}) in the Oct. 9 GI First Lady S. at Keeneland.

Multiple graded stakes winner Mary's Follies is also the dam of graded stakes winner Night Prowler (Giant's Causeway) and Japanese Group 1 winner Cafe Pharoah (American Pharoah) The mare produced a colt by Connect in 2020 and, after aborting in 2021, was bred back to American Pharoah. She sold to BBA Ireland for $500,000 at Keeneland January this year. Her Connect yearling, purchased by Larry Best's OXO Equine for $185,000 in January, RNA'd for $425,000 at this year's Keeneland September sale.

Regal Glory is the fourth Grade I winner for GI Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom, who has also been represented by G1 Australian Derby winner Angel of Truth (Aus), GI Jaipur S. winner Oleksandra (Aus) and last year's GI American Oaks winner Duopoly.

Miles D Possible for Saudi Trip

Peter Brant and Robert LaPenta's Miles D (Curlin) may have earned a trip to the G1 Saudi Cup in February with his victory in Saturday's Discovery S. at Aqueduct.

“I'm not one to send my horses to other continents to run. I like to stick to my circuits. But that race has been on my mind with the right style of horse,” trainer Chad Brown said. “This might be the kind of horse that fits for me trying one of those races. Although he's had a couple of hard races, he is lightly raced. If you look at his record, he hasn't had that many starts. He didn't have to do battle in the Triple Crown, and he doesn't have a ton of miles on him.”

Miles D was second in the Curlin S. and third in the GI Runhappy Travers S. over the summer at Saratoga and took a Belmont allowance in October before winning his first stakes race Saturday in his sixth career start.

Brown said Miles D was unlikely to target the Jan. 29 GI Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream where he would face Breeders' Cup winners Knicks Go (Paynter) and Life is Good (Into Mischief).

“I have to talk to the owners about it. I'm not really sure,” Brown said. “I'm not so much interested in the Pegasus against those two horses. I'll get him down there and see. There's definitely a pace scenario to consider as well. If I race in big races in the wintertime, it's horses that are lightly raced. With horses that have had long campaigns, I don't care how much money they offer me at any track. I don't really run them too much. This horse, there's a possibility that we keep on going with him.”

Brown Contemplating Big Targets For Miles D In 2022

Four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown said Peter Brant and Robert V. LaPenta's Miles D, an impressive winner of Saturday's $150,000 Discovery at Aqueduct Racetrack in Ozone Park, N.Y., could point to the $20 million Group 1 Saudi Cup in February at King Abdulaziz Racecourse in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

A son of multiple champion producing stallion Curlin, Miles D collared heavy favorite Speaker's Corner in the stretch drive of the Discovery, a nine-furlong test for sophomores, registering a career-best 102 Beyer Speed Figure. The win followed a hard-fought first-level allowance score against older company on October 24 going 1 1/16 miles at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

Miles D sports a consistent ledger of 6-3-1-1, including a stakes placing in his sire's namesake race on July 30 at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., en route to a third in the Grade 1 Runhappy Travers on August 28.

Brown said Miles D is not likely to target the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup on January 29 at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., a race expected to attract reigning Breeders' Cup champions Knicks Go [Classic] and Life Is Good [Dirt Mile].

Brown said Miles D could be a force to be reckoned with next year in the older horse division.

“If he takes another step forward next year, runs in all the handicap races, and has success in one or more of them, he has a lot of stallion potential. Races like the Whitney or the Jockey Club are ones that would matter to me quite a bit,” Brown said.

Miles D was fourth on debut last October at Belmont in what turned out to be a key maiden race, finishing behind Speaker's Corner as well as subsequent stakes winners Caddo River and Greatest Honour.

Brown credited both his team and owners for allowing a patient approach with the horse.

“It's taken a lot of patience by our team and our two owners. They never questioned giving him a little time,” Brown said.

Named after the late influential jazz musician Miles Davis, Miles D is out of the unraced Bernardini broodmare Sound the Trumpets, whose first dam is multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire My Flag and second dam is undefeated Hall of Fame champion Personal Ensign. Miles D was acquired for $470,000 from the Denali Stud consignment at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Brown went on to report that Klaravich Stables' Forced Ranking will not make this Saturday's Grade 2 Remsen at Aqueduct after spiking a temperature. He will still, however, saddle Jeff Drown's maiden winner Zandon, who breezed a half-mile in :49.82 Sunday over the Belmont dirt training track.

Peter Brant's Serve the King and Irad Ortiz, Jr. bided their time in the early going of the GII Red Smith S. and while it appeared they might not make it up in time in Saturday's 11-furlong Big A feature, the English-bred found another gear late to best pacemaker Channel Cat by a neck. The latter, this season's GI Man O' War S. winner and sporting blinkers for the first time, went straight to the front, doling out early fractions of :24.96 and :50.02 with No Word (Silent Name {Jpn}) in pursuit while the 2-1 favorite lingered in a rail-skimming fifth. Still moving easily midpack down the backstretch, the Chad Brown trainee finally came off his inside perch and started to inch forward approaching the quarter pole. Fanned out five wide and with still a handful of rivals in front of him turning for home, the handsome bay appeared to idle for a moment at midstretch but came on in the final strides to eke out the win over the game pacesetter. Soldier Rising closed impressively to finish third over No Word.
“I had a really good trip,” said Ortiz, Jr. “He broke sharp and was forwardly placed. He put me in a good position, so I saved all the ground for the whole race. At the half-mile, I started moving and he responded really well. I was able to tip him out and when he hit the clear, he was running.”
He continued, “He was off the bit sometimes, but that's him. He's not a horse that's going to pull you all the way. That's not him. Sometimes, you have to wake him up and let him know he's running. He's there for you, that's the good thing.”
Serve the King hit the board in four of five starts last season, including a nine-furlong optional claiming win and a runner-up finish in the GIII Monmouth S. in October. Fourth in his first two starts of 2021, including in the 11-furlong GI United Nations S. in July, the 260,000gns Tattersalls October grad appreciated the extra yardage in Saratoga's John's Call S. at 13 furlongs Aug. 25 ahead of a second behind Rockemperor (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) in the GI Joe Hirsch Turf Classic S. Oct. 9. “A lot of credit goes to my Monmouth crew, who really did a good job helping this horse,” said winning trainer Chad Brown. “As a younger horse, he was a little bit quirky and wouldn't want to train all the time and for whatever reason down there he has a comfortable situation and would train on. That's why he spent a lot of his time down there…After the Hirsch, we left him here and he picked right up and has been cooperative and he's fine now. My crew here did a great job. It was a real team effort from different divisions to keep this guy on track.”

With his GII Red Smith S. win, Serve the King became the 23rd graded/group winner for his sire and fourth in the U.S., each trained by Chad Brown. He is the second of Kingman's GSWs out of a Galileo, joining G3 Musidora S. victress Nausha (GB). Out of Group 2 placed Fallen In Love (GB), the 5-year-old is a half to French Group 3 scorer Loving Things (GB) (Pivotal {GB}). The 15-year-old mare is also represented by an unraced 3-year-old colt by Siyouni (Fr) and a juvenile colt by Fastnet Rock (Aus). Her latest produce is a weanling filly by Expert Eye (GB).
