Into Mischief’s Gina Romantica Sparkles on Debut

6th-Tampa Bay Downs, $32,000, Msw, 3-12, 3yo, f, 6f, 1:11.35, gd, 1 1/4 lengths.
GINA ROMANTICA (f, 3, Into Mischief–Special Me, by Unbridled's Song) left the gates as a heavy 4-5 favorite in this debut for powerhouse connections. Rating from seventh early on, the $1.025 million KEESEP purchase watched the pack in front jostle for position down the backstretch and through the final turn. Called on for her rally coming into the lane from the far outside, Gina Romantica swooped by her rivals under a confident ride to win by 1 1/4 lengths over Spiked (Unified). Out of Special Me, the pretty bay claims several talented siblings including Stonetastic (Mizzen Mast), MGSW & GISP, $856,062, who was bred back to Gun Runner after producing a filly by him last year; new Lane's End stallion Gift Box (Twirling Candy), GISW, $1,127,060; and Special Forces (Candy Ride {Arg}), MGSW-Can, SP-USA, $409,147. Gina Romantica is the first seven-figure sale for the small, but mighty blue hen Special Me. However, the mare's year-older filly named Meir Point (Medaglia d'Oro) brought $500,000 from Larry Best as a weanling at the FTKNOV sale. Special Me aborted her 2020 Quality Road foal and her 2021 Curlin filly died. The mare is expecting a full-sibling to Gina Romantica this season. Sales history: $1,025,000 Ylg '20 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $18,240. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Pataki, Mack and Brant Lead Humanitarian Group to Assist Ukranian Refugees

Former Governor of New York George Pataki, the founder of the Pataki Leadership Center and a trustee of the Advisory Council of the Appeal of Conscience Foundation joins Appeal of Conscience Foundation Trustee and the former U.S.  Ambassador to Finland Earle I. Mack and philanthropist Peter M. Brant, also a member of the Advisory Council of the Appeal of Conscience Foundation, to deliver medical supplies, food, clothing and other essentials to the Ukrainian refugees arriving in Hungary.

Mack and Brant departed Florida with a plane load of supplies Thursday evening. Gov. Pataki is already on the ground in Hungary. They will meet with high-level government and religious leaders, including Cardinal Peter Erdo, Primate of Hungary the Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest, who is a Trustee of the Appeal of Conscience Foundation Advisory Council, with representatives of the various international relief organizations, Jewish relief agencies who are on the scene and leading members of the Hungarian Jewish community. This delegation will leave a team of professionals who will remain at the Hungarian/Ukrainian border to assist local officials and healthcare workers in aiding the refugees.

“I have deep family ties to the Ukraine through my great-great grandparents who managed to come to America in the early 20th century,” Mack said. “I have been a first responder in other disaster areas and I intend to be a first responder again to bring aid to the innocent victims of war in the Ukraine in their time of need.”

Brant said, “The Ukrainian people really need our help.  Whatever we can do big or small we need to do for them now.”

Dubawi’s In Italian Wins Honey Fox

Favored In Italian went wire-to-wire to give owner Peter Brant and trainer Chad Brown their second graded victory of the afternoon in the GIII Honey Fox S. at Gulfstream Park Saturday. The chestnut filly rushed up to take the lead into the first turn. Allowed to set pedestrian splits, the favorite shrugged off a pair of challengers in upper stretch and skipped clear to the wire.

“It went perfect,” said winning rider Irad Ortiz, Jr. “We didn't want to go head to head, but my filly outbroke all of them so I said, 'I'm gonna go.' From there, she just took me all the way. I didn't expect to be on the lead. It looked like there were a couple of horses coming out of sprint races, but when the gates opened, everything changed. She was on top, so I just said, 'Go ahead.'”

In Italian was tabbed a 'TDN Rising Star' following her front-running 3 1/2-length maiden score at Belmont last May before being sidelined by illness. She returned with a 4 1/4-length tally in a Jan. 12 allowance at Tampa Bay Downs last time out.

“We really liked this horse last year,” Brown said. “She was very impressive at Belmont and then she got a bad case of pneumonia. She had to be stopped on and rehabbed. I want to give Bruce Jackson credit down at Fair Hill. He rehabbed her and sent her back in good shape late in the year at Payson Park. She's back and picking up where she left off and should have a really good career.”

Pedigree Notes:

Florentina, a half-sister to Group 1 winner Gathering (Aus) (Tale of the Cat), has a 2-year-old filly by Kingman (GB). Her 3-year-old colt by that same sire, the unraced Spanish Empire (GB), sold to Tom Magnier for $1.8 million at the 2021 Magic Millions January sale. The mare was bred to Yes Yes Yes (Aus) (Rubick {Aus}) last year.

In Italian became the 146 worldwide graded winner for her sire, Dubawi.

First Mare in Foal to Raging Bull

Multiple Grade I winner Raging Bull (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}–Rosa Bonheur, by Mr. Greeley) has had his first mare reported in foal, Gainesway said Monday. Ginger Kitty (Red Rocks {Ire}), a juvenile winner and now 5-year-old mare from the family of Grade I winner Tactical Cat (Storm Cat), scanned in foal to the former Chad Brown trainee.

Raging Bull captured five stakes racing from ages three to six, taking the GI Hollywood Derby as a sophomore, the GI Shoemaker Mile S. as a 5-year-old in 2020 and the GI Maker's Mark Mile s. at six last spring. An earner of over $1.7 million in the colors of Peter Brant, Raging Bull stands at Gainesway for $10,000.
